The renaissance of the night train in Europe: how night trains could become an attractive alternative for driving and flying
Over the past decade, night trains have undergone a remarkable transformation. Once considered outdated and unprofitable, they are now re-emerging as a sustainable alternative to flying. Demand is rising, new connections are appearing, yet operating conditions remain challenging due to high costs and the need for specialized rolling stock.
Findings show that many services were cut in the past because of low profitability. Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, a slow ‘renaissance’ of the night train has started, with many newly introduced in the years since. Although new services are being introduced, the operating conditions remain difficult for operators and gaps in the European network are still present. Not only financially, but significant institutional and technical remain.
Two solutions are essential for a healthy future development of night trains: reducing high track access charges, which make operations costly, and investing in new rolling stock to meet increasing passenger demand. The latter will be needed to accommodate further growth and the replacement of old rolling stock.
Limitations of this research include a focus on Western Europe and a non-representative respondent group. Future studies should include larger, more diverse traveller populations to better assess potential routes
Incentivising change: The role of subsidies in stimulating sustainability
This study aims to unveil the influence of subsidy allocation on corporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance, thereby complementing existing studies that primarily aim at the influence of sustainability performance on subsidies. Anchored in the substitution argument from the tax avoidance literature, this study expects subsidies to act as a replacement for private financing to increase corporate ESG performance. By merging subsidy data from the Good Jobs First Subsidy Tracker (GJF ST) and ESG and control variables from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), the analysis covers 9,980 US firm-year observations across 2014-2023. Through a staggered difference-in-difference (DiD) design using the Callaway & Sant’Anna (CS) estimator, the findings provide suggestive evidence of a positive influence of subsidy on ESG performance. It implies that firms might bolster their sustainable behaviour through investing in initiatives when leveraging on the funds they free up when being granted a subsidy. This study underscores the potentialities to government authorities and corporations alike to align their agendas and interests, positioning subsidy allocation as a catalyst for sustainability
Violations of human rights in the east of Europe: A geo-political analysis of the 2021 debacle at the Belarusian-EU external border
In this research contemporary geopolitics regarding the politics of territoriality; the politics of the instrumentalization of migration; the politics of border externalization; domopolitics; and the politics over the mortality of people are central. It examines what led to the Belarusian migration crisis, and how the Belarusian/Middle East migration corridor came into existence. This is done through the civilianized character of modern conflicts, leading to a first dimension of ‘death worlds’ of necropolitics for citizens of the Middle East. Furthermore, it is argued that the securitization from migration embodied by border externalization violates human rights and reproduces power exertion over racialized others along external EU borders, creating the second dimension of ‘death worlds’. It is through this outsourcing and hardening of borders, that new migration corridors open elsewhere. Finally, in this thesis the method of hybrid warfare by Belarus is examined and the EU member states’ response to this. Through disregarding international law and human rights declarations, migrants were pushed back over the Belarusian border, creating a division between those that are welcomed inside the house of domopolitics and those that are not. It is outside this border, serving as a filtering membrane, that domopolitics turns into necropolitics, at the Belarusian/EU border
"Flexibility or Vulnerability? Real Options Theory and Acquisition Motive Diversity in Distressed Acquiring Firms" Examining the Performance Implications of Strategic Motive Diversity in High-Tech M&A
Some acquisitions are more risky than others, depending on what acquisition motive is pursued. However, less is known about the impact of multiple acquisition motives on the post-acquisition performance. This study argues that when firms pursue diverse motives, they create different strategic paths that provide future opportunities. Extending on real options theory, this study conceptualized the diversity of acquisition motives as a mechanism for creating a portfolio of options that enhances a firm’s strategic flexibility and adaptability in uncertainty. The creation of options are specifically beneficial for firms in distress, due to increased uncertainty and need for strategic flexibility. Through a panel data approach of acquisitions deals involving firms from the high-tech industry in the period of 2008 to 2020, the data is analyzed using time fixed-effects regression. The findings show no significant relationship between motive diversity and post-acquisition performance and no significant moderation effect of firm distress. However, while distressed firms theoretically expected to benefit from motive diversity, the realization of an increased performance could be due to other factors

Education and democracy: Explaining differences in democratic attachment among young people
In this study, I research why democratic attachment among young people differs across educational levels, using data from the 2022 European Social Survey (ESS) round 10. By examining socioeconomic status, civic education, the concept of diploma democracy, and economic insecurity, I test four hypotheses that attempt to explain the differences in democratic attachment of young people. Based on a factor analysis, I divide the concept of democratic attachment into two dimensions: trust in democratic institutions, and attachment towards democratic values. The analyses show, contrary to my expectations, young people with higher education levels actually show significantly lower institutional trust, while I found no significant difference for their attachment toward democratic values. Socioeconomic status and civic education both have a positive effect on democratic attachment, but do not explain the differences across educational groups. Diploma democracy and economic insecurity are even stronger explanations for this effect, but again do not explain the differences in levels of education. This study contributes to the existing literature on democratic backsliding and lays the foundation for future research on the topic
