    No full text

    No full text

THE BALANCING ACT BETWEEN EXPERTISE-BASED INTUITION AND MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING INFORMATION IN STRATEGIC DECISION-MAKING OF DUTCH SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISES

    No full text
This study explores how decision-makers in small and medium-sized enterprises balance expertise-based intuition and management accounting information in strategic decision-making. It responds to recent calls for more qualitative research on the role of intuition in business decisions. A qualitative approach has been employed, with data collected through 12 semi-structured interviews supplemented by the Critical Incident Technique. The sample group consisted of 12 Dutch SME decision-makers. The findings highlight the complementary use of EBI and MAI. In addition to this, four other themes emerged from the data that influence the balance between EBI and MAI: organizational growth, type of decision, the educational and professional background of the decision-maker, and the internal and external organizational structure. Smaller SMEs tend to rely more heavily on EBI, while larger SMEs use a more structured, MAI-supported approach. As organizations grow, the balance generally shifts towards the MAI side, driven by increased formalization, higher stakes, and more needs for justification. The study confirms the dynamic and context-dependent nature of SDM within SMEs, aligning with the hybrid decision-making models suggested in the literature and contributing new insights into the interplay between EBI and MAI

Quantitative easing and the use of bonds in the debt structure of mergers and acquisitions in the European Union

    No full text
Does quantitative easing impact the ratio of bonds in the capital structure of mergers and acquisitions? This thesis constructs a proprietary dataset using European mergers and acquisitions data, acquirer bond data and a proxy for monetary policy to show that acquirers use a larger ratio of bonds in the capital structure of M&A-transactions under quantitative easing conditions. A one percent decrease in the policy rate is equal to a 20,1% increase in the ratio of bonds in the debt structure of acquiring firms. This relationship helps firm managers in capital structure decisions and policymakers in understanding the effects of monetary policy in practice

The Costs of Climate Change: The Effect of Rising Temperatures on Children’s Nutritional Status in India

    No full text
This thesis investigated whether rising temperatures affect children’s nutritional status in India negatively, in order to examine whether the increasing temperatures (Mourougan et al., 2024) and the prevalence of child malnutrition (Das et al., 2021; Tripathi et al., 2023) in this developing country are related. Existing literature indicates that increasing temperatures influence (children’s) health and nutritional status negatively through multiple channels (e.g. Bharambe et al., 2023; Biswas et al., 2024; Ebi & Paulson, 2007; Motarjemi et al., 1993). Nutritional status is measured by weight-for-age Z scores (WAZ), which is also used to examine how rising temperatures affect the probability of children being underweight (WAZ <-2). WAZ and other health-related data from NFHS-4 and NFHS-5 are combined with weather data (e.g. daily temperatures) from ERA5, and create a district-wave panel with 467 districts in total across the two waves. A binned temperature approach is utilized, where bin 4 (24-28°C) is used as the reference group, and heterogeneity analyses are performed as well. However, the findings do not align with expectations based on existing literature. Therefore, the null hypothesis, which states that rising temperatures negatively affect children’s nutritional status in India, cannot be rejected

    Small firm, big waves

This thesis investigates how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) transition from informal Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices to structured Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) engagement. Using Liburnia Maritime Agency (LMA), a Croatian logistics SME, as a case study, the research employs qualitative methods - including document analysis, stakeholder questionnaires, and interviews - to explore this evolution. Findings reveal that LMA’s deeply embedded CSR culture, driven by values-led leadership and community engagement, forms a strong foundation for emerging ESG practices. Increasing stakeholder expectations from clients, financial institutions, and regulators are prompting the company to formalize its sustainability efforts, guided by intangible resources such as organizational culture, trust, and legitimacy. Dynamic capabilities like learning and adaptability further enable LMA to align internal routines with evolving ESG demands. The study challenges the view of ESG as solely an external regulatory imposition. Instead, it presents ESG integration as a relational and adaptive process, grounded in existing CSR and internal strengths. Drawing on the Resource-Based View and Stakeholder Theory, it proposes a conceptual model illustrating how SMEs can leverage their unique capacities to become proactive contributors to sustainability transitions. This research highlights the strategic potential of ESG for SMEs, even in contexts where formal mandates are absent

    No full text

    No full text

    No full text

Generational ageism, a relational process: How generational stereotypes affect employee experiences of generational ageism in implicit ways.

    No full text
Generational labels like “OK Boomer” or “Lazy Millennial” are increasingly common in media, everyday conversation, and workplace discourse. While ageism has received significant scholarly attention, bias based on perceived generational cohort (generational ageism) remains comparatively underexplored. This qualitative case study of an assistant department at an international law firm explores how generational stereotypes affect employee experiences in subtle, often implicit ways. Despite assistants' explicit rejection of generational framings or denial of generational discrimination, their narratives revealed embedded assumptions that influenced how they perceived and treated their colleagues and themselves. By adopting frameworks of relational ageism theory and generational identity theory, this thesis argues that generational ageism is not an obvious or linear process but a relational, cyclical one, emerging through personal experience, internalization, social interactions, organizational dynamics, and media narratives. Positioned at the intersection organizational studies age studies, and broader social sciences, this research offers a nuanced perspective on how generational stereotypes, even when unacknowledged, can subtly affect experiences of age-based inequalities in current organizational life
