Beyond the Stage: How K-pop Fandoms Provide Practical Support and Cultural Navigation for Migrants.
This thesis explores how K-pop fandom communities support migrants in their adaptation and sense of belonging in host countries. While traditional migration research emphasizes formal integration programs, this study highlights the value of informal, online networks. Using a mixed-methods approach, an online survey (N=57) and five semi-structured interviews were conducted with migrants active in K-pop fandoms. Findings show that fandom spaces offer both practical guidance—such as navigating bureaucracy, accessing services, and understanding cultural norms—and emotional support that helps reduce isolation. K-pop’s participatory culture, multilingual engagement, and organized global community emerged as particularly beneficial compared to other fandoms. Overall, this research demonstrates that K-pop fandoms function as meaningful, informal inclusion spaces that complement formal integration pathways by fostering social connection, cultural learning, and resource-sharing among migrants
Broad prosperity and business park policy in the city of Eindhoven and Waalwijk
This thesis examines how the concept of broad prosperity has been incorporated into the policy-making process surrounding business parks in the Netherlands. Broad prosperity encompasses more than economic indicators and includes aspects such as health, quality of life, and mobility. Business parks are important economic drivers, but they can also put pressure on the surrounding area in terms of broad prosperity. The central question in this study was: What effects do large business parks have on broad prosperity in their surroundings, and how can broad prosperity be better integrated into business park development?
This study conducted a qualitative case study, in which a business park in Eindhoven and Waalwijk were examined. In addition, this study combines two theories, namely the broad prosperity framework and the theory of discursive policy making. Together, these theories help to explain the discursive challenges surrounding broad prosperity and how the concept is, or is not, capable of influencing policy.
The results show that in Eindhoven, broad prosperity is mainly used as a discursive and reflective concept. There is not yet a clear assessment framework within the policy that is capable of weighing up different aspects. Waalwijk has implemented the concept more directly in its policy, using broad prosperity to guide the selection criteria for the allocation of land for the new business park. The study concludes that business parks can contribute to broad prosperity when the concept is institutionalized and supports integrated decision-making, but the effect remains limited when broad prosperity is used only rhetorically
Mischief Not Yet Managed: Queer and Disability Representation in Harry Potter Fanfiction.
This close-reading of the character Remus Lupin in the fanfictions All The Young Dudes by MsKingBean89 and Kill Your Darlings by MesserMoon will explore how fanfiction highlights the ongoing gaps in inclusivity and representation within mainstream entertainment media. A Pilgrimage Through History - Mark Twain’s experience of sites of the past as described in The Innocents Abroad
Recent years have seen significant academic interest in the embodied experiences of tourists. However, such tourist experiences have hardly been the subject of study in a historical context. This study aims to contribute to the limited body of literature on this topic. This thesis examines how Mark Twain experienced sites of the past as recorded in his travel book The Innocents Abroad. Drawing from both tourism studies and embodiment theory, this study explores how Twain’s views on Romanticism, history, and his own Protestant American identity shaped his encounters with sites of the past. Through a close analysis of The Innocents Abroad, this paper characterises Twain as someone who is critically aware of the literary tropes of his time, yet also appreciates the mythical stories embedded in the places he visits. Furthermore, this study investigates how Twain’s embodied experiences range from awe to fatigue and how these interacted with his expectations and preconceptions as a tourist. Ultimately, by analysing Twain’s embodied, cognitive, and cultural encounters with sites of the past, this thesis demonstrates how his experiences were shaped by the interplay between personal identity, historical imagination, and the realities of nineteenth-century tourism
Real Estate Projects in Noord Brabant: a research on factors which affect the duration of real estate projects in Noord Brabant
The Dutch real estate sector faces significant challenges due to delays in project completion. With national agendas focussing on different housebuilding objectives, pinpointing Noord-Brabant as one of the largest potential building areas. This research identifies and analyses the key factors that influence project delays, and see how they correlate. This study utilises quantitative surveys with project developers to measure the presence and impact of potential delay factors. The Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) method is employed to assess interdependencies and multiple causal pathways leading to project delays. The presence of different pathways identifies which specific condition-combinations can potentially contribute to project delay. The research uncovers that singular conditions are not individually causing project delay, but combinations of conditions are. The three configurations which lead to severe delay all include financial uncertainty as a background condition, with procedural implications and /or public litigation as delay factors. Implying that tailored policy is needed to decrease delay in future projects. The research contributes to both academic knowledge and practical implementation suggestions such as increasing plancapacity and working with prefabricated housing types
Making sense of integrity: Civil society’s influence on international operating firms in collective action against corruption
This study investigates the influence of civil society actors on international operating
firms in making sense and responding to collective anti-corruption initiatives within global
supply chains. By employing a longitudinal qualitative case study of the International
Collective Action Conference (ICAC), the research utilizes a sensemaking lens along with
the Gioia methodology to capture the evolution over time in the context of global supply
chains. The study identifies three core sensemaking mechanisms: framing integrity,
institutional anchoring, and ethical norm-setting. Through these mechanisms, civil society
actors shape corporate compliance behaviour, reframe integrity as a shared social
responsibility, and bridge the gap between soft and hard law. The findings show civil
society’s role has evolved from advocacy to co-regulation, co-creating institutional pathways
that embed collective action in global supply chains. This research contributes to governance,
institutional, and sensemaking theory by demonstrating this role in the global anti-corruption
landscape
Placemaking through the eyes of placemakers – An exploratory study of professional placemaking practice in the Netherlands
This thesis examines how professional placemakers in the Netherlands understand and apply placemaking in their daily work. Although the concept has gained significant traction in planning and development, its popularity has also made it diffuse and at times superficial. Existing literature offers rich theoretical debates, yet the perspectives of those who practice placemaking remain underexplored. This study therefore asks what placemaking means to practitioners, how they operationalize it and why they consider it valuable.
Using a qualitative, interpretative approach inspired by constructivist grounded theory, nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with practitioners from design agencies, development firms, and cultural organisations, complemented by a mapping of the Dutch placemaking field. The findings show that practitioners approach placemaking less as a fixed methodology and more as a guiding philosophy that links social and spatial processes through intentional collaboration. Despite differing interpretations, three recurring principles emerge: intentionality, contextual sensitivity and inclusivity.
The study also reveals tensions around agency, temporality, and purpose, alongside structural constraints such as limited resources and institutional rigidity. Yet practitioners remain optimistic about placemaking’s future role as a bridge between physical development and social responsibility. By foregrounding their perspectives, this thesis contributes to ongoing debates on how placemaking can evolve into a more mature and meaningful practice
How the framing of asylum seekers by populist parties affects their sense of home
This study conducts a qualitative research in how the framing of populist parties influences the sense of home from refugees in Nijmegen. It does so by conducting a document analysis of the latest two election programs of the PVV which show three frames are used the most: the Islam-as-a-threat frame, the restrictive frame and the intruder frame. Furthermore it searches how refugees rebuild their sense of home in Nijmegen and which psychological and physical elements impact this the most by conducting interviews with refugees. This showed that emotional safety, social interactions and spatial stability are the main contributors to rebuilding a sense of home and fostering a sense of belonging. At last it seeks to find if the rise populist parties have an effect on the lived experiences of refugees in daily live. By combining the interviews and theory it revealed that the constant threat of the possibility to be excluded did influence the experiences of refugees. Although the local, friendly environment of Nijmegen caused there to be no constant fear in their daily lives
