Urban Greening and Gentrification Dynamics in Dutch Cities: Quantitative Analysis of Socioeconomic and Green Space Shifts, 2009-2023.
This study examines the relationship between urban greening and gentrification in the Netherlands, addressing gaps in spatiotemporal research and the reliance on property values as a proxy. Utilising multilevel regression and GIS analysis, the study investigates the temporal relationship between gentrification and urban greening in five Dutch cities between 2013 and 2019, and whether gentrification precedes, coincides with, or follows urban greening.
Findings reveal complex dynamics: while urban greening marginally precedes gentrification in some cases, results are inconsistent. The analysis reveals a positive relation between increased green space, higher education levels, and a decline in low-income residents in Eindhoven and The Hague. However, regression models indicate green space loss may precede property value increases. The hypothesis that greening follows gentrification is largely refuted, while the coexistence of greening and gentrification is only marginally supported.
The study underscores the role of existing green space and newly developed real estate in shaping gentrification. The study calls for equitable urban planning strategies that integrate climate adaptation with social justice. Future research should explore longer timeframes, include residential mobility data, and examine street-level greenery to refine policy interventions, such as improved monitoring, participatory green projects, and safeguarding social housing near green spaces
Mobility policy success stories? A comparative case study analysis of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht
This master thesis assesses the extent to which the inner city sustainable mobility transitions of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht could be considered ‘policy success stories’. Through comparative case study research, it compares the inner city mobility transitions of the three cities corresponding to their mobility policies Agenda Amsterdam Autoluw, Rotterdamse MobiliteitsAanpak and Mobiliteitsplan 2040 (Utrecht).
The thesis applies theory from transition, transport, policy and public participation studies. It helps to address an existing academic gap - the lack of a ‘success’ assessment methodology focused on mobility transition policies. For that, it developed a state-of-the-art mobility policy success assessment matrix with 14 success factors to consider when assessing the success of mobility transitions evoked by dedicated mobility policies.
Semi-structured interviews with policymakers and other experts involved in the transitions were conducted alongside a literature review and desk research. The generated knowledge could aid policymakers and implementers from Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht to 1) gain an understanding of the gaps in their approaches, 2) understand which aspects of their approach could be considered already successful, and 3) gather inspiration from the other two cities on ‘what works’ and ‘what does not’ in the Dutch context
Transformative Inversion of Existential Feelings: Understanding Therapeutically Beneficial Experiences in Psychedelic Treatment and Personal Recovery Through Ratcliffe’s Lens
This paper explores the thematic similarities between therapeutically beneficial experiences in psychedelic treatment and personal recovery by drawing on Ratcliffe’s concept of existential feeling. To do so, the initial section provides an introduction to psychedelics in psychiatric practice and highlights commonly experienced themes considered therapeutically beneficial. The second section introduces personal recovery and CHIME – five key processes considered
beneficial. Here, I also establish that certain similarities are evident when comparing the therapeutically beneficial themes in psychedelic treatment and CHIME. While section three outlines Ratcliffe’s work on existential feeling, section four deals with its application to psychedelic and personal recovery experiences and delves into the question of how the thematic similarities can be understood in terms of a transformative inversion of existential feeling. By uncovering antithetical possibility structures of experience, I conclude that the themes considered therapeutically beneficial are pre-determined by the themes encountered in mental disorder
Hiring by Sound: The Role of Recruiter Personality Traits on Accent Evaluations and Suitability for the Job.
This study examined how the personality traits of recruiters—specifically extraversion, openness to experience, and agreeableness—impacted their assessment of applicants' accents in hiring decisions. 65 Dutch-speaking human resource professionals participated in the experiment by listening to audio fragments of candidates speaking either with a British- English or a Dutch-English accent. Participants then rated the candidates on perceived status, affect, dynamics, and suitability for the job. The personality traits were measured using the HEXACO-60 questionnaire focusing on extraversion, openness to experience, and agreeableness. Results showed that the British-English accent was evaluated higher in terms of status and suitability compared to the Dutch-English accent. In contrast, recruiters with greater levels of extraversion, openness to experience and agreeableness did not show significant preference for one accent over the other in terms of perceived suitability, suggesting that other factors, such as job type and accent familiarity, may mediate these decisions
Every toilet counts: the relationship between supermarket toilet availability and quality of life in the Netherlands
This thesis examines the relationship between the availability of customer-accessible toilets in Dutch supermarkets and the quality of life of their visitors. Toilets are essential but overlooked infrastructures that shape who can participate in the public life and urban life. While supermarkets are among the most frequently visited semi-public spaces in The Netherlands, many of those supermarkets lack accessible toilets. This creates barriers for people with chronic illnesses and older adults.
Using a quantitative research design, the study analysed data from a nationwide survey of 3,500 respondents which was conducted in collaboration with the Toiletalliantie and the Maag Darm Lever Fonds. The survey was structured around the World Health Organisation Quality of Life (WHOQOL) framework. Statistical analyses revealed significant positive associations between perceived accessibility and multiple aspect of wellbeing. In particular physical comfort, psychological reassurance, social participation and autonomy.
The findings highlight that toilets are not merely amenities but fundamental infrastructures of inclusion. Their absence could limit autonomy, reinforces social inequality and undermines the participation in daily lives. The study concludes with a call for supermarkets and policymakers to integrate an accessible toilet into design and regulation. Recognising that every toilet counts. Especially in places that count in everyday life
The influence of populism on migration framing by interest groups in the European Union: an analysis of changing frames
This thesis examines how European interest groups frame migration policy in response to the rise of populism between 2009 and 2025. It explores whether and how these organisations adapt their framing to remain relevant within an increasingly politicised EU governance landscape. The study aims to provide insight into the adaptability of interest group framing under shifting political conditions, with a particular focus on populism. It also reflects on the risks of normalising discourse that may undermine liberal democratic norms.
Based on a qualitative content analysis of 131 documents from ECRE, MPG, and the Meijers Committee, the research traces shifts in both general communicative frames and migration-specific frames. The timeframe is divided into two periods: 2009–2013, preceding the populist surge, and 2014–2025, shaped by its ascendancy.
Findings show that, despite increased politicisation, interest groups continue to rely on legal reasoning and a rights-based lens. Human rights remain the central normative anchor, even as framing expands to include governance-related concerns such as Member State resistance and institutional inertia. The tone remains technocratic and constructive, resisting populist rhetoric. The study concludes that populism has prompted adaptation in content, but not in communicative form, and recommends greater theoretical attention to the stabilising role of human rights
