Lost for Words: Revitalizing Languages in a Warming World

    No full text
This thesis argues that Indigenous language revitalization is vital not only for the cultural survival of Aboriginal communities in Canada but also for preserving ecological knowledge critical in the face of the climate crisis. Drawing on philosophical frameworks—including Wittgenstein’s concept of language-games, Buber’s I–Thou relational ethics, Mugerauer’s environmental understanding, and Indigenous epistemologies—the thesis explores how Indigenous languages carry and generate place-based knowledge systems and worldviews rooted in reciprocity and adaptability. It examines how settler-colonial violence and linguistic imperialism have systematically eroded Aboriginal languages, leading to both cultural disintegration and ecological harm. Ultimately, the thesis defends revitalization efforts and cross-cultural collaborations as necessary for restoring worldviews vital to resisting environmental degradation and envisioning more relational, sustainable futures

Overreaction or Opportunity? An Event Study of Defense Sector Stocks Responding to Geopolitical Shocks

    No full text
This study aims to examine whether defense sector stocks overreact to geopolitical shocks, specifically focussing on the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Gaza conflict. The research uses an event study methodology to calculate the Cumulative Average Abnormal Returns (CAAR) over multiple pre- and post event windows across three models. Consistent for both events and all three models, defense sector stocks show a steady increase in CAAR over the one-year post-event period. This pattern contradicts the overreaction hypothesis, which would predict an initial spike followed by a correction. To compare the findings for the defense sector, a control group of non-defense stocks is taken into consideration. For nondefense stocks, the results suggest that their cumulative average abnormal returns do not consistently deviate significantly from zero over time. The research concludes that defense sector stocks show drift over the one year post-event period, rather than a short term overreaction. Although the study is limited to a one year post-event horizon, the findings offer valuable insights into investor reactions to geopolitical shocks across defense and non-defense sector equities

The Hague can deny their existence, Amsterdam cannot and will not

This thesis investigates the challenges faced by undocumented immigrants in Amsterdam during the COVID-19 pandemic and the role of civil society in addressing their needs. The pandemic exacerbated existing vulnerabilities, including job loss, homelessness, and exclusion from state support due to fear of deportation. In response, a dynamic network of NGOs, individuals, and public institutions emerged to provide essential services such as food, shelter, and legal aid. Using assemblage theory, the study conceptualizes this network as a fluid and adaptive civil society assemblage, shaped by shifting political and social pressures. The analysis reveals a tension between exclusionary national immigration policies, exercising necropolitical control, and the biopolitical responsibilities assumed by municipal actors like the Municipality of Amsterdam. This tension fosters strategic alliances between local governments and NGOs, highlighting the potential of decentralized, networked responses to humanitarian crises. The study also emphasizes the agency of undocumented immigrants in building support structures and advocating for their rights, shifting the focus from state-centric narratives of control to everyday practices of resilience. By situating these dynamics within broader theoretical frameworks, the research contributes to understanding how local actors mitigate systemic exclusion and explores the sustainability of such interventions amid ongoing institutional constraints

Eating Babylon, Eating Jesus: Anthropophagy and Ritual Subversion in Revelation 17

    No full text
Language of consumption winds its way around the body of the Whore of Babylon in Revelation 17. Despite the debated nature of Babylon’s identity, controversy around her violent death, and questions regarding her relationship to the beast she rides, little attention has been paid by scholarship to the anthropophagic imagery surrounding her. This thesis will offer new insights into the meaning of the motifs of eating and drinking human flesh and blood in Revelation 17. It will do so by asking how these motifs are used in ancient Afro-Asian literature, in the Graeco-Roman world, and in other New Testament texts. I will then explore the parallels between the consumption of Jesus in the New Testament and the consumption of Babylon

    No full text

Theodor W. Adorno and the Problem of Modern Occultism

    No full text
In the aftermath of the Second World War, the political nature of esotericism was increasingly put into question by various leftist authors. One work produced in this context was Theodor W. Adorno’s Thesen gegen den Okkultismus (Theses against Occultism), a short but influential text published in his 1951 volume Minima Moralia. In contemporary scholarship, Adorno’s text has been sharpy criticised. The main charges are that the text lacks rigour in defining its object of critique, that Adorno was ignorant about historically existing esotericism, and finally, that his project was motivated by an inquisitorial, intolerant attitude. Through a genealogical reconstruction of esotericism in modern times, this article demonstrates that these interpretations are predicated on a series of misunderstandings. It will be shown that Adorno was not as historically misinformed about “occultism” as previously thought, and that his Theses should be understood as a work of cultural criticism and philosophical diagnosis rather than as a work of rationalist polemicism

    No full text

Steering the circular transition: Challenges and Solutions for Small Municipalities in the Netherlands

    No full text
This master’s thesis explores how small municipalities in the Netherlands navigate the transition to a circular economy, focusing on the governance challenges they face and the solutions they employ. Using the framework of Dagiliene et al. (2021), the study identifies three key challenges: goal ambivalence, knowledge uncertainty, and distributed power. Through document analysis, a survey, and interviews with ten municipalities and experts, the research reveals that circular goals are often vague and inconsistent, knowledge is limited and concentrated in a few individuals, and municipalities lack formal influence over systemic change. While steering solutions—such as regulation, shared visioning, learning, and collaborative governance—are acknowledged, their practical application is constrained by the very challenges they aim to address. The study proposes an adaptation of the original framework, introducing governance capacity as a necessary intermediary. It concludes that small municipalities can only effectively steer the circular transition if they first invest in administrative capacity: building structural knowledge, developing clear visions, and strengthening partnerships. Despite their resilience and creativity, without consistent support from higher levels of government, their impact remains fragmented and limited

Developing a data-driven predictive lead scoring solution for the B2B on-trade market of the beer industry

    No full text
This thesis explores, implements and evaluates a data-driven approach to predictive lead scoring in the B2B on-trade market of the beer industry. The aim of the research is to leverage machine learning models to enhance traditional sales approaches, enabling more efficient and effective customer acquisition strategies. The research was conducted using data from a diverse set of internal and external sources, provided by a Dutch beer brew ery. The proposed approach involves two separate machine learning models: a prospect scoring model to estimate the probability of lead conversion, and a volume projection model to predict the expected sales volume of an outlet. Separate models are devel oped for the contracted and non-contracted sales divisions, which have very different market dynamics. The prospect scoring model demonstrates strong predictive perfor mance. with Random Forest emerging as best performing model. The volume projection model shows poor performance, likely due to limitations in data quality and availabil ity. Qualitative feedback from sales representatives acknowledges the high potential of data-driven lead lists, but also reveals the importance of contextual factors, which are often not captured in the data. The findings suggest that predictive lead scoring can effectively support customer acquisition in the non-contracted market, where the sales process is less complex. However, the contracted market likely requires a more adaptable approach that incorporates regional sentiment and other contextual factors that have a strong influence on lead relevance
