Trust and the Historical Emergence of Cadastres
This thesis investigates the role of generalized trust in the historical emergence of cadastres. I show that generalized trust is positively correlated with the historical emergence of cadastres. Countries that are more trusting developed more complete cadastres earlier. This finding is made possible through new historical data on cadastres, which is combined with cross-country data on generalized trust and other control variables. I use interannual temperature variability as an instrument for generalized trust to find some, but not fully conclusive, evidence that this correlation is a causal effect. Next to that, I find evidence that this correlation is heterogenous, and that the correlation is smaller or non-existent in countries where European colonial powers imposed extractive institutions. To explain the effect of generalized trust on the historical emergence of cadastres, I point to the mechanism where trust enables political coordination among society and the elite to establish institutions and solve the political commitment problem
Social trust and Corporate misconduct
This study examines whether social trust reduces corporate misconduct in the United States. A large panel of U.S. listed firms with economical information from the Compustat database is combined with regional trust scores from the World Values Survey and penalty data from the violation tracker database. Using mixed-effects regressions that account for firm, year, and industry dependence, this study finds a robust negative relation: higher social trust is associated with both lower monetary penalties and a smaller likelihood that firms receive any penalty at all. The effect is stronger in a subsample with detailed governance information. In contrast when a different proxy is used for social trust, that measures “trust in companies” no such negative relation is found, underscoring the importance of how trust is measured.
These results extend prior evidence from China to a Western, stronger institutionalized country, suggesting that social trust complements formal institutions instead of solely replacing them. The findings imply that regulators could use trust indicators in their inspections into corporate misconduct, and that local policy makers could focus on community initiatives aimed at strengthening local trust, in order to reduce corporate violations
‘To Capture the Irrational with a Rational Mind’: The Problem of Myth in the Historiography of Fascism
The usage of ‘myth’ in relation to the historiography of fascism remains conceptually inconsistent. This thesis examines and critiques the origins of the concept from the works of George Sorel and its subsequent adoption by historians, suggesting significant epistemological issues that hamper its explanatory potential. This critique is brought into sharper relief through recourse to R. G. Collingwood’s philosophy of history and his notion of historical explanation. An alternative philosophical conceptualisation of the concept based on the works of Carmen Lea Dege and Tae-Yeoun Keum is introduced to highlight the contrasting commitments underlying the notions of myth and historical explanation, and their resulting tension. Myth is finally presented as a concept that challenges the metaphysical commitments of historical explanation itself
The impact of Extra-entrainment and Rhythms of Repetitive Mergers and Acquisitions on Firm Performance: The Moderating Role of Industry Dynamism
The performance effects of when and under what conditions firms must accelerate or slow down their M&A activities are gaining attention in strategic fit literature. This study examines the effect of M&A rhythm and the synchronization of rhythm with competitors on firm performance and whether this influence is moderated by industry dynamism. A longitudinal panel of approximately 1,500 U.S. firms (2000-2018) was analyzed using fixed-effects regression models to test the hypothesis. The results reveal an inverted U-shaped relationship between firm rhythm and performance, indicating that an even-event-paced rhythm enhances firm performance. In contrast, synchronizing with the rhythm of competitors did not significantly affect firm performance. Additionally, industry dynamism did not alter the impact of extra-entrainment on firm performance. These findings contribute to strategic management theory by integrating temporal aspects in M&A research, suggesting that superior M&A rhythms require balancing consistency and flexibility. Furthermore, this study
provides a more nuanced view towards entrainment theory, suggesting that the benefits of extra-entrainment are context-specific
Mergers & Acquisitions as a greenwashing strategy: Do acquiring firms improve ESG scores without real change?
This thesis investigates whether mergers and acquisitions (M&A) serve as a mechanism for acquiring firms to enhance their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, and whether such improvements reflect genuine change or symbolic greenwashing. Drawing on stakeholder and signaling theory, the study examines 260 M&A deals between 2002 and 2021, focusing on transactions where the target’s ESG score exceeds that of the acquirer. A difference-in-differences (DiD) approach is applied to assess post-merger ESG score changes relative to non-acquiring firms, with additional analysis exploring the role of target ESG characteristics. The results provide modest evidence that M&A activity is associated with improved ESG ratings for acquirers. However, these improvements are not systematically explained by the ESG profile or pre-merger ESG advantage of the target firm. The findings suggest that post-merger ESG gains may reflect managerial signaling or reputational effects rather than substantive integration of sustainability practices, aligning with concerns about greenwashing. This research contributes to the emerging literature on ESG in M&A by highlighting the need for critical scrutiny of post-acquisition ESG developments and emphasizing that meaningful sustainability progress requires more than strategic deal-making
Moving Fast and Breaking Things: The increasing role of start-ups in the European defense domain
The EU has recently increased its focus on stimulating the role of innovative tech start-ups in the European defence domain. The goal of this assistance is to greatly enhance their security and military capabilities before the year 2030. Despite arguing that these start-ups are important to enhance its security, the EU is stimulating their role in defence only in a limited amount. Through a combination of a theory-driven and grounded theory approach, this thesis uses a qualitative content analysis of recent EU-defence policy documents to examine if this restrained stimulation is due to the absence of militarized neoliberalism or other constraining factors. Militarized neoliberalist theory argues that neoliberal governments are using economic statecraft to enhance their military and defence capabilities to contain China. The results of this analysis suggest that the increased role of start-ups in the European defence domain is a result of the presence of militarized neoliberalism in the EU. However, this only leads to a limited amount of stimulation due to two constraining factors that are intrinsic to the EU defence domain: normative constrains and the fragmented nature of member states. Because of the negative effect that a large role of start-ups in the defence domain could have on (inter)national security, this thesis hopes to contribute to a debate on the desirability of these developments
