Two visions of Islamism?: A Comparative Analysis of Sayyid Qutb’s Milestones and Hasan al-Hudaybi’s Preachers, Not Judges

    No full text
Purpose: Sayyid Qutb and Hasan al-Hudaybi are usually presented in the literature as each other's ideological opponents within the Muslim Brotherhood. Both leaders were imprisoned for their ideas, and during that imprisonment they both wrote a book that further expounded their ideological ideas. Many scholars claim that Hudaybi's book Du'at la Qudat (Preachers, Not Judges) is a response to Qutb's book Maʿālim fī al-Ṭarīq (Milestones) in which he explains what is wrong with Qutb's ideas. Whether this is true or not, the books have many ideological differences. Since the literature places so much emphasis on these ideological differences, the question arose if there are also ideological similarities between Qutb and Hudaybi. Qutb's book Milestones was carefully compared with Hudaybi's book Preachers, Not Judges to answer this question

The old empire and the new curriculum: the representation of British imperial history in educational materials for Dutch upper-level learners of English

    No full text
Due to the proposed curriculum changes in the Netherlands which places importance on cultural awareness regarding the subject of English. This research focusses on the content and narratological analysis of educational materials from the three largest publishers of educational materials for Dutch upper-level learners of English language teaching. In so doing, it aims to answer the question: To what extent and in what way do New Interface, Of Course, and Stepping Stones represent Britain’s imperial past in educational materials for Dutch upper-level learners of havo 4-5 and vwo 4-5-6? It has done so by establishing and applying codes such as but not limited to: colonization, decolonization, empire, multiperspectivity. This research has shown that in all twenty texts and clips, British imperial history is presented through single voiced coherent accounts. Sources added to these texts are only ornamental or supportive and don’t provide conflicting narratives. Only two texts engaged with multiple perspectives and only seven texts showed experiences of non-western historical subjects. Educational materials should add sources which provide different narratives as to better prepare for the proposed new Dutch curriculum

Dierbaar dier. Zingeving aan een veganistische levenswijze te midden van een carnistische samenleving en de constante realiteit van dierenleed en klimaatverandering

    No full text

“Creating the Paradise of the Pacific”. How “American” is Hawaii? Examining the Link between Tourism and Colonialism in Hawaii

    No full text
With pristine beaches, impressive landscapes and exotic cultures, Hawaii is known as a ‘paradise on earth’. Nevertheless, the growing tourism industry is making it difficult for native Hawaiians to sustain themselves. This thesis examines how this current situation with tourism in Hawaii is a result of its complicated history with colonialism and the United States. Through analysing tourism promotions as well as two case studies of tourist attractions in Hawaii through the concepts of orientalism and colonial nostalgia, it can be concluded that the image of Hawaii is constructed based on the commodification of Hawaiian culture in order to be able to sell an exoticized version of Hawaii to tourists

Rewriting Identity, One Letter at a Time: Musical Negotiation of Dutchness in P.S.

    No full text
Amidst a global loss of belonging (Duyvendak 84), musician Ruben Hein and the Matangi Quartet created the performance P.S. (2024), in which contemporary ideas of Dutch national identity are negotiated. Presenting the performance as an “ode to the letter”, the nostalgic epistolary medium is used to mediate existing ideas about Dutch identity. Instead of merely reiterating or critiquing Dutch identity, P.S. destabilizes and reflects on (historical) Dutch narratives. Building on theories of national narratives and nostalgia, I will analyse the way form and content interplay to provide a musical space, which allows for reflecting on a liminal temporality present in retellings of the past. In this thesis, I argue that P.S. uses the nostalgic medium of the letter as a framework to elicit a tension between national narratives and personal memories, thereby uncovering the processes that underlie the formation of national identity

Making sense of the increasing regulations on Environmental, Social, and Governance in the European banking sector

    No full text
Given their facilitating role in sustainable development, organizations in the European financial sector face increasing pressure to comply with regulations on environmental, social, and governance (ESG). How organizations navigate the complexity and ambiguity around these mandatory ESG regulations remains unclear. Through a single case study, this research explores how a Dutch multinational bank operating in the European financial sector, makes sense of increasingly mandatory ESG regulations regarding their organizational structures and processes. A sensemaking perspective is used to explore how interpretations create shared understanding of ESG regulations (Weick, 1995). Through six semi-structured interviews and document analysis, the findings indicated how changes in this bank’s sustainability governance structure aims to navigate regulatory ambiguity. This bank engages in three sensemaking mechanisms to interpret and embed ESG regulations in the organization: in-depth mapping, harmonizing, and dividing responsibilities among existing roles. This research emphasizes the importance of adapting a sustainability governance structure to enable the sensemaking process. Moreover, a facilitating mechanism highlights how organizational processes enhance learning and improving during the sensemaking process. By identifying this bank’s sensemaking mechanisms on ESG regulations, this research contributes to sensemaking literature and understanding of ESG regulations in the financial sector

Beurtwisseling en beurteinde cues bij mensen met Parkinson: een experimentele studie

    No full text

Peer Effects, Board Interlocking and the Perception of Political Risk of US Firms, 2002-2022

    No full text
This thesis researches whether the political risk perception of peer firms’ political risk perception, defined through board interlocks, positively affects the political risk perception of the focal firm. In theory based on the board interlocked networks literature, information related to political risk would spread through these networks. Political risk perception is measured through computational textual analysis of transcripts of Earnings Conference Calls of publicly listed firms in the US. Linear in Means modelling was used based on the Peer Effects literature. Robustness tests included measuring the effect of indirect board interlocks and testing if the CEO, CFO or IR was on the board. The study finds mixed evidence that political risk information of firms spreads through these networks and influences other firms’ political risk perception. I find a small amount of evidence for indirectly board interlocked networks, but not through directly board interlocked networks. The results are not completely in congruence with the well established literature. In the discussion, several possible reasons are discussed for this result. No clear explanation could be found, and therefore multiple avenues of research are open for further investigation
