Too dead to fail: The effect of organizational structure on zombie firms
No full textThis study investigates the relationship between corporate group affiliation and the likelihood
of firms becoming zombie firms. Zombie firms are defined as companies that remain operational
despite continued unprofitability, potentially distorting resource allocation and hindering
economic growth. Using firm-level data from the ten largest economies in the European Union
between 2016 and 2023. This study conducts a logistic regression analysis to assess whether firms
within business groups are more likely to become zombies compared to standalone firms. The
results show that group affiliation is positively and significantly associated with zombie status.
Robustness checks using an alternative definition based on the interest coverage ratio and the
exclusion of Italian firms from the dataset confirm the results, although the strength of the
relationship varies. These findings suggest that internal financial support within business groups
may allow unproductive firms to persist, and that national context can influence this effect. The
study contributes to the literature by highlighting organizational structure as a key factor in firm
survival and offers implications for policymakers and creditors in assessing firm viability and
designing targeted intervention
Sociale veiligheidsbeleving inwoners gemeente Zaltbommel
No full textSinds 2019 laat de veiligheidsbeleving op buurtniveau in Nederland een neerwaartse trend zien. Binnen het leefbaarheidsprogramma van de gemeente Zaltbommel krijgt dit thema daarom aandacht, omdat veiligheidsbeleving wordt gezien als een essentieel onderdeel van de leefbaarheid in de openbare ruimte. Om inzicht te krijgen in welke factoren de sociale veiligheidsbeleving beïnvloeden en hoe deze verbeterd kan worden met maatregelen in de openbare ruimte, zijn in totaal 44 respondenten geïnterviewd: 34 inwoners over drie verschillende kernen, 5 leden van dorps- en wijkraden van de drie verschillende kernen en 5 ambtenaren veiligheid en ruimtelijke ordening.
Uit de interviews blijkt dat inwoners van de gemeente Zaltbommel zich over het algemeen veilig voelen. Opvallend is dat de inrichting van de openbare ruimte slechts in beperkte mate de sociale veiligheidsbeleving van inwoners van de gemeente Zaltbommel beïnvloedt. Inwoners benadrukken voornamelijk het belang van sociale cohesie, waarbij interactie en onderlinge betrokkenheid zorgen voor sociale controle en een betere sociale veiligheidsbeleving. Op basis van deze bevindingen worden de volgende dingen aanbevolen: het ondersteunen van sociale activiteiten en het faciliteren van ontmoetingsplekken, het zorgen voor een overzichtelijke openbare ruimte, het betrekken van inwoners bij het ontwerpen van de openbare ruimte en focussen op voorzieningen voor jongeren
De transitie naar elektrische voertuigen in Noordwest-Europa: Een vergelijking tussen Noorwegen en Zweden vanuit een beleids- en gedragsmatig perspectief
No full textDeze bachelorscriptie onderzoekt de verschillen in snelheid en effectiviteit van de transitie naar elektrische voertuigen (EV’s) in Noorwegen en Zweden. Hoewel beide landen beschikken over vergelijkbare sociaaleconomische omstandigheden en klimaatambities, verloopt de adoptie van EV’s aanzienlijk sneller in Noorwegen dan in Zweden. Het onderzoek richt zich op drie verklarende dimensies: beleidsmatige factoren, gedragsmatige factoren en het beleidsdiscours. Aan de hand van de Policy Mix Theory en de Social Practice Theory worden zowel overheidsmaatregelen als consumentengedrag geanalyseerd. Het onderliggende conceptueel model, ontwikkeld op basis van beide theorieën, draagt bij aan eigen theorievorming doordat het contextuele elementen zoals nationale cultuur en beleidsdiscours expliciet integreert. Door middel van beleidsanalyse en zeven semigestructureerde interviews met beleidsmakers en experts is onderzocht hoe EV-beleid is opgebouwd, welke gedragspraktijken worden beïnvloed en welke discursieve motieven aan het beleid ten grondslag liggen. De resultaten tonen aan dat het succes van Noorwegen deels verklaard kan worden door centrale sturing, financiële voordelen en maatschappelijke normalisering, terwijl Zweden inzet op gedeelde verantwoordelijkheid, deliberatief beleid en langetermijnvisies. De scriptie sluit af met een reflectie op implicaties voor Nederland, met aanbevelingen voor een geïntegreerde beleidsaanpak die zowel financieel aantrekkelijk als sociaal ingebed is

No full textStedelijke transformatie is iets wat elke dag voorkomt en ook altijd zal blijven voorkomen. Om in dit proces voor verbetering te zorgen is er in deze scriptie onderzoek gedaan naar de rol van beleidsarrangementen in de transformatie van het Honiggebied naar woonlocatie. Hierbij is er specifiek gekeken naar de transformatie van oude industriële gebieden naar woonlocatie. Het Honiggebied is een terrein waar vroeger industrie plaatsvond en hedendaags werkzaamheden bezig zijn voor stedelijke vernieuwing. Door te kijken naar welke rol het beleidsarrangement op de transformaties had kan er een beeld gevormd worden voor mogelijke toekomstige verbeteringen. Hierbij is er gekeken naar de dimensies actoren, discoursen, macht en regelgeving; de vier dimensies van de beleidsarrangementenbenadering. Daarnaast is er gekeken naar hoe deze vier dimensies onderling invloed op elkaar hebben en is er bekeken wat voor een mogelijkheden en belemmeringen er zijn ontstaan in het transformatieproces.
De data is verkregen uit zeven semigestructureerde interviews met betrokken actoren bij de transformaties van het Honigterrein

No full textThe IMF has since the crisis of 2008 demanded of Ukraine that natural gas be taxed to the point that domestic prices within Ukraine reach international market levels in a way that is unusual for the Fund. This thesis triangulates data from IMF reports and secondary sources to create an explanatory narrative that argues that this policy is derived from an ideological alliance of the managers at the IMF with US and transnational capital, to whom the IMF functions as a Transnational Managerial Class, to transnationalise the Ukrainian state and introduce transnational FDI. As a secondary hypothesis the idea of the IMF as an geopolitical battlefield primarily acted upon by US capital and the US state, independent of other more geopolitically conservative NATO states, to isolate Chinese FDI from weapon and energy export alternatives is presented as an explanation for the incoherence of NATO policy towards the IMF’s goal of transnationalisation of the Ukrainian state

No full textIn this thesis, I bring Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse memorial into
conversation. By doing so, I highlight the tension surrounding American history
-its portrayal and its ties to identity- at the two sites. By analysing the monuments’
original aims, I highlight the differentiation between dominant national narratives
and Indigenous memory, guided by Pierre Nora’s theory of lieux de mémoire. In
a later step, I analyse visitor recessions through the coding of Google Maps
reviews in a broader reflection on public interpretation of both monuments. The
key of my thesis lies in the comparative approach between the two case studies,
presenting a study of American memory and Indigenous (in)visibility
The effect of the GDPR on AI innovation.
No full textWith growing attention and discussion of the GDPR's impact on innovation and the position of the EU in the global digital market, this is a tangent problem for the EU to tackle. This study investigates the effect of the GDPR on AI innovation in the EU. Existing studies showed contradictory findings, underscoring the complexity and context-dependent relationship between privacy regulations and innovation. This thesis employs panel data regression and an SCM, utilizing multiple data sources such as OECD, OpenAlex, and Preqin, from 2014 to 2020. The outcomes investigated in this study are AI and data patents, AI-related publications, AI knowledge flows, VC investments in AI and data startups, as well as in different sectors, supplemented with regular R&D data. The findings are that the GDPR is associated with a negative yet non-significant effect on most outcomes. This study is one of the first to examine and find that the effects of the GDPR differ based on national technological capabilities and governance structures. The results highlight the need for further research into the specific effects per country. Such insights could help steer the European Commission in refining its policy approach to mitigate any unintended negative consequences of the GDPR
Migrants and their feelings concerning the far-right refusing to apologize for their colonial past
No full textThis thesis researches the impact of a state’s refusal to issue state apologies regarding colonial wrongdoings on Dutch citizens descended from former Dutch colonies, here referred to as migrants. The feelings concern feelings of ostracization. This research is done in the context of the rise of the far-right in Dutch politics. The era of European imperialism is marked by crimes against humanity, including colonization itself. Modern-day society is, however, marked by the former colonization; society is based on structures that stem from racial hierarchical systems, which means that state apologies do not only apologize for the specific crimes of the past, but also the impact that colonialism has on the lives of migrants.
Postcolonial theories of white fragility, othering, and postcolonial governmentality are employed to frame the data. Data collected through interviews with migrants shows that they do not feel represented by the far-right, nor do they agree with the policies they mean to implement, all voting for left-wing parties, instead. Although state apologies are important to all respondents except one, for only half of the respondents, feelings of ostracization arise when the state refuses state apologies

De invloed van NEC op de bewoners rondom het Goffertstadium
No full textIn deze bachelorscriptie wordt onderzocht in welke mate NEC bijdraagt aan het gevoel van identiteit en verbondenheid voor de bewoners rondom het Goffertstadion. Hierbij is de hoofdvraag ‘In welke mate ervaren de bewoners rondom het Goffertstadion dat NEC bijdraagt aan het gevoel van identiteit en verbondenheid?’ geformuleerd. Om tot passende conclusies te komen is er gebruikgemaakt van een kwantitatieve onderzoeksmethode in de vorm van een enquête. De enquête is afgenomen in de wijk ‘Goffert’. Dit is de wijk waarin het Goffertstadion, de thuisbasis van NEC, ligt.
De enquêteresultaten laten zien dat een meerderheid van de respondenten zich in zekere mate verbonden voelt met NEC en dat deze verbondenheid vaak samenhangt met gevoelens van trots en de andere variabele identiteit. Uit de resultaten is gebleken dat mannen zich sterker verbonden voelen dan vrouwen met NEC. Uit de resultaten is gebleken dat mannen zich sterker verbonden voelen dan vrouwen met NEC. De actieve participatie, zoals vrijwilligerswerk of betrokkenheid bij supportersactiviteiten, blijft relatief laag. Er wordt aangetoond dat NEC meer is dan een voetbalclub. Tegelijkertijd wordt er ook duidelijk dat de impact niet voor iedereen gelijk is en dat er groepen zijn die zich slechts beperkt identificeren met de club
