Komt een ziel bij de dokter. De plaats van zingeving in de huisartsenpraktijk

    No full text

Unveiling Dutch Policymakers' Climate Service Requirements for Informed Decision-Making regarding Urban Heat Stress Adaptation

Urban heat stress is currently considered the most significant climate risk. Policymakers can have a profound influence on urban heat stress by developing and implementing adaptation policies. However, municipalities cannot develop effective projects without sufficient knowledge on how to establish heat-resilient cities. This research aimed to uncover the climate services required by Dutch policymakers to guide decision-making concerning urban heat stress adaptation. The study adopted the climate information design template alongside the holistic triangular knowledge cycle for sustainability to establish a structured and theoretical foundation. Through a case study including semi-structured interviews with policymakers’ from various Dutch municipalities engaged in urban heat stress adaptation, the research has identified their specific requirements. By providing insight into these requirements, the research aims to strengthen the scientific foundation for ongoing heat stress research and facilitate the development of well-informed policies to beat urban heat stress

Fighting climate change with energy subsidies: A study in the Dutch specific subsidy to reduce energy consumption.

    No full text
As national governments combat climate change, the Dutch government designed a subsidy to mitigate climate change by reducing household energy consumption. The subsidy had a budget of € 87 million and was issued between 2020 and 2021. This thesis studied the effectiveness and efficiency of this subsidy, employing a Generalised Synthetic Control Method. The data included a panel of 172 treated and 142 untreated municipalities between 2010 and 2023. The findings show that households in treated municipalities consumed, on average, 17.371 m3 less gas than if the municipality did not receive the subsidy. The subsidy was effective in reducing household energy consumption and consequently avoided 331,871 ton CO2 emission. The subsidy was also efficient, as this policy measure cost € 262.15 per avoided ton CO2, which is more efficient than two out of three similar subsidy schemes. The heterogeneity analysis shows that small municipalities with high voter turnout and small distances to social services might have an advantage in effectively and efficiently implementing this subsidy

Shaped by Scarcity: the mental impact of poverty on food choice

    Get PDF
Recent statistics indicate obesity is more prevalent among people with lower incomes. Previous research has shown that poverty reduces cognitive function. Some research has linked this to making unhealthier food choices. However, the evidence so far is limited. Therefore, this study adopts an experimental approach to study how being primed with experiencing poverty impacts the healthiness of food choices. Additionally, it is evaluated whether imposing a cognitive load impacts these results. The data are evaluated using ordered logit regressions. Although the experimental setup provides the opportunity of establishing causality, the results of the experiment indicate there is no relation between experiencing poverty or a cognitive load and the healthiness of food choices. Significant predictors of the healthiness of food choices were gender, perceived social pressure to eat healthily, and how important participants indicated price and healthy eating to be. Therefore, this research contributes to the understanding of what mental aspects drive the food choices of individuals and how poverty changes that. That way, it contributes to policymaker’s understanding of what drives the health gap between people with lower and higher incomes and what should be focused on when aiming to close this gap

Alone together: The workplace integration of Polish labour migrants doing production work through a Dutch employment agency

    Get PDF
This thesis explores the workplace integration of Polish labour migrants doing production work in the Netherlands through a Dutch employment agency. Despite being the largest labour migrant group and important to the Dutch labour market, their integration into the workplace community remains underexplored. The study aims to identify which factors influence migrants’ motivation to integrate. A mixed methods approach was used, combining a literature review with quantitative survey data from 80 Polish labour migrants, working mostly in the food and meat processing sector in Gelderland. The research is focused on three domains: personal and external factors, expectations, and workplace culture. Findings reveal that human-cultural capital increases over time and influences their willingness to stay. While most respondents identify primarily with their Polish background, it does not hinder satisfaction with life in the Netherlands. Positive expectations, such as learning new skills and job satisfaction, predicted an increased motivation to stay and integrate. Regarding workplace culture, positive relationships between employees and a sense of belonging were linked to positive workplace experiences and a willingness to integrate. This study highlights the multidimensionality of migrant integration into the workplace as a result of interconnected factors, depending on the individual’s efforts and surrounding workplace environment

Three Moments in the History of the Artistic Genius and the Prostitute: From Absence to Agency

    No full text
In this essay, I demonstrate the relevance of the opposition between the figures of the prostitute and the artistic genius in the art vs. porn debate through a description of three distinct moments in the relationship of the prostitute towards art: (1) the prostitute as absent, neither subject nor object of genius, (2) the prostitute as object of genius or the artist, (3) the sex worker as artist. Thereby I establish that, while the figure of the prostitute is historically, through a process of (re)mystification and abstraction, opposed to the artistic genius and denied artistic agency, certain pornographic artists today are capable of presenting their own pleasure as art, claiming their place within the realm of art production and aesthetics

The sustainability of music events in Goffertpark - Analysing the case of The Nest Festival through the perspective of stakeholders

    Get PDF
As a result of the global climate crisis, more pressure is put on the sustainability of cities. Green spaces are influential in urban areas, providing ecological as well as social and cultural benefits. Live music events held in these green spaces impact the whole dynamic of the city, therefore it is important to analyse the sustainability of these events. This research is focused on the sustainability of live music events held in the Goffertpark, Nijmegen, analysed through the case of The Nest festival. Through the use of qualitative methods, consisting of interviews with stakeholders and document analysis, an accurate representation of the current situation of the festival was established. Situating this in the wider debate on sustainability challenges. From the results can be concluded that the impact of The Nest Festival consists predominantly of carbon emissions, caused by suppliers, visitors, crew and artists. The festival already has several projects running to mitigate its impacts, most of which revolve around waste separation and disposal. The festival faces several obstacles and opportunities in further improving its sustainability. Since The Nest Festival is only recently concerned with sustainability, it would be interesting to analyse the development of environmental practices in the upcoming years

De aanpak van cybercriminaliteit in Nederlandse zeehavens

    Get PDF
