Sensing seduction - Tracing the senses in Ovid's Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris and Medicamina Faciei Femineae
As much as Ovid likes to play Dr. Love, he failed to warn me of the many side effects that come with writing a thesis on love and seduction. The strongest side effect turns out to be that you’ll find yourself reflecting on the many examples of love in your own life. Although my life tends to be heavier on love’s platonic flavours than on the spicy Ovidian kind, there’s still plenty of love for me to spread. Let’s get to it.
First and foremost, I am deeply indebted to my supervisor and tutor, prof. dr. Bé Breij. Bé, we did it again! Your thoroughness and wit made all the difference once more. In addition to supervising this thesis, you really went above and beyond for me over the past few years. I could easily write a Ciceronian speech on that subject, but for the sake of brevity, I’ll leave it at this: thank you for never losing faith in me. I never would have made it this far without you.
Second, I am very grateful to dr. Roald Dijkstra for his enthusiastic agreement to be my second reader. Roald, you are in for a wild ride—I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Insofar as I know anything about love, I learned it all from two teachers who could give Ovid a run for his money: my mother and sister. I truly wouldn’t know what to do without you. You’re the best.
I would now like to thank the following partners in crime for their support throughout the years:
Bas, my beautiful Brother, they say that the only two certainties in life are death and taxes. I’d like to add a third item to that list: our friendship. Thank you for sticking around no matter what. I am incredibly proud of you and who you have become. Here’s to many more years of Parallel Lives.
Janine, your infectious optimism and kindness have restored my faith in humanity more than once. I still haven’t figured out how you do it, but everything you touch seems to turn to gold. I can only hope I’ll get to share many more proverbial bags of popcorn with you.
Janis, it’s been an honour to face the many trials and tribulations of the ReMA™ together with you. Mira couldn’t get us down, the Milstein Room couldn’t get us down, and now, our theses won’t be able to either. I’d say we deserve to go on a fishing trip soon!
Pauline, ever since we met a few years ago, you’ve been an inspiration and an example to me. Most people could learn a thing or two from your no-nonsense approach to life and your unparalleled sense of justice. I’m sure the future has great things in store for you—and I’ll be right by your side to witness all of it.
Next, a shout-out to my colleagues at the Teaching Information Point is in order. Inge, Kees and Maarten, I’m really glad I got the opportunity to work with you—you’re all amazing company and you’ve made this whole writing process much more bearable.
Finally, I would like to take a brief moment in memory of prof. dr. Marc van der Poel. Let it be known to each and every reader of this thesis that Marc’s influence on me runs throughout every word you’re about to read. I hope it shows.
With love,

Borrowing for security. The political economy of the financialising EU defence industries
This thesis explores the financialisation of European Union defence industries, focusing on the evolving role of the Commission in reshaping defence financing through capital markets. Faced by geopolitical crises, notably the war in Ukraine, and constrained by fiscal limitations, the Commission introduced debt-driven instruments under the ambitious ReArm Europe initiative, reaching 800 billion euros. This shift from traditional grant-based methods to including financial industrial actors represents a seismic shift in EU defence policy, marking the emergence of a new finance-led regime of accumulation. Employing an enriched Regulation Theory framework, this thesis analyses four interconnected dimensions: the regime of accumulation, mode of regulation, capital fractions, and strategic selectivity. Through document analysis spanning 2020 to 2025, it highlights how the Commission strategically uses regulatory innovation, such as bonds, guarantees, and de-risking instruments, to integrate financial market interests into defence funding mechanisms. Findings indicate a deliberate recalibration by the Commission, striking a balance between geopolitical urgency and financial market interests, thereby creating an emerging European Union military-industrial-financial complex. This research contributes to critical political economy literature by delving deep into how supranational institutions actively shape economic practices, challenging traditional views on EU policymaking and raising significant implications for democratic accountability and European strategic autonomy
Gefragmenteerde veiligheid.
Home Advantage: Ceremonial Soft Power in the New Arena of E-sports
This thesis investigates how opening ceremonies of sporting mega-events and e-sports events,
as tool of cultural diplomacy, contribute to enhancing the host country’s soft power. Where
existing literature has put considerable focus on traditional sporting mega-events, such as the
Olympics and FIFA World Cup, this thesis offers a contemporary lens by adding e-sports as
platform for symbolic projection in a digital age. Through a comparative case study analysis,
an analytical framework is developed to compare four dimensions: Intended Audience &
Style, National Narrative & Story, Symbols & Iconography, and Technology. With the
analysis and comparison of the Sochi 2014 Olympics, the Games of the Future 2024 in
Kazan, and the Olympic E-sports Week 2023 in Singapore, the analysis examines how the
opening ceremonies are utilized as soft power tool, focusing on similarities and differences
between sporting mega-events and e-sports events. Findings reveal how e-sports events offer
a considerable focus on technological development - not as part of, but as the narrative.
Accordingly, the concept of techno-symbolic soft power is introduced to define this
phenomenon. The study advances scholarly understanding of ceremonial soft power as
cultural diplomacy tool and contributes a novel understanding of e-sports as an emerging
domain of cultural influence
Gender and Cultural Board Diversity: Examining its Impact on Corporate Misconduct
Corporate misconduct is rising, affecting firms, stakeholders, and society. Effective corporate governance mechanisms can reduce such misconduct. Therefore, this study examines the impact of gender board diversity (GBD) and cultural board diversity (CBD) on the frequency and severity of corporate misconduct among US multinationals over the period 2000-2024, with a special focus on the period after the financial crisis. A Negative Binomial model is used to examine the frequency expressed in number of fines. Severity is measured in terms of total monetary value, using a Pooled OLS model. The results suggest a 10% increase in GBD is associated with a 5.14% reduction in the number of fines. While initially weak, additional analysis confirm the relationship. CBD, based on Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, is associated with a 1.29% reduction in number of fines, with a stronger effect after the financial crisis. No evidence suggests that GBD and CBD reduce the severity of violations. However, using Nationality Mix as an alternative measure for CBD, reduces the total value of fines by 5.38%, when Nationality Mix increases by 10%. The joint effect of GBD and CBD does not significantly influence the frequency and severity of corporate misconduct. These findings broaden the literature on board diversity and provide policymakers with insights into the influence of GBD and CBD on corporate misconduct, supporting the Upper Echelons, Stakeholder and Agency theory
An intersectional examination of how educator positionality and school location shape the delivery of culturally sensitive sexual health education in Dutch secondary schools
This master’s thesis, conducted at Radboud University Nijmegen, examines how educator positionality (age, gender, race, class, culture, religion, background, experience, perspectives, and biases) and the geographical context of Dutch secondary schools influence culturally sensitive sexual health education. Using an intersectional framework, the study shows these factors do not operate in isolation but interact to shape both communication style and content.
The research combines 11 in-depth interviews with sexual health experts and five ethnographic classroom observations across schools in Hoorn, Culemborg, Velp, and Rotterdam. Findings reveal that younger educators often display more openness and cultural adaptability, while older ones rely on familiar frameworks. Gender and race influence delivery style, with female educators more likely to stress feminist viewpoints. Racial homogeneity often led to blind spots regarding student diversity. Religion shaped comfort levels with topics like LGBTQ+ rights. These identity traits further shaped educators’ perspectives, experiences, and biases.
Geographical context also mattered: multicultural urban settings required nuanced strategies to manage diversity, while rural settings saw overlooked differences. Socioeconomic status had subtler impacts on class dynamics.
The thesis highlights that effective sexual health education depends on who teaches, how they relate to students, and where teaching occurs. It recommends self-reflexivity training, diverse teaching teams, and adaptable curricula
Populist Ostpolitik: The impact of AfD and BSW populist rhetoric on the German discourse on the Russia-Ukraine war
This thesis employs a comparative discourse analysis to research how populist rhetoric from the right-wing AfD and the left-wing BSW has influenced the foreign policy discourse of the mainstream CDU/CSU and SPD parties on the Russia-Ukraine War. By analyzing party rheto-ric from the period leading up to the 2025 federal election, this study has found that despite the framing of the AfD and the BSW, the policy stances of CDU/CSU and SPD remain fully in favor of Ukraine. The AfD employed mostly nationalist and economic arguments, and the BSW emphasized pacifism and anti-imperialism, while both parties engage in aggressor apol-ogism. These frames led to both the CDU/CSU and the SPD ruling out coalitions with the AfD and the BSW, ultimately resulting in a CDU/CSU-SPD coalition government, despite the electoral gains of both the AfD and the BSW
