Indigenous knowledge and freshwater governance in Aotearoa New Zealand

    No full text
This thesis examines the integration of mātauranga Māori in freshwater governance in Aotearoa New Zealand, exploring whether Indigenous knowledge is substantively embedded in institutional practices. Using a mixed-methods qualitative approach, the study analyzes policy documents, iwi environmental plans, and audiovisual sources across four domains: representation, governance, engagement, and influence. Findings indicate that while Māori worldviews are increasingly cited in environmental policy, their incorporation often remains symbolic. Crown-led governance structures continue to marginalize Māori authority, with consultation processes rarely leading to genuine co-decision-making. Structural influence is typically confined to isolated initiatives, such as iwi-led monitoring efforts. The thesis contributes to theoretical discussions on epistemic justice, legal pluralism, and decolonisation by illustrating how institutional inclusion can perpetuate unequal power dynamics. It introduces a conceptual framework positioning governance as a filtering system shaped by feedback loops that influence future engagement. The study calls for institutional reform that embeds binding Māori co-governance, supports tikanga-based monitoring, and fosters relational engagement. Future research should explore diverse Māori perspectives and assess how co-governance is operationalized in practice

Restoring English rivers: evaluating the ecological and policy dimensions of weir removals and wild salmonid recovery

    No full text
Small dams and weirs are widespread across rivers in the United Kingdom, yet they significantly degrade habitat quality and obstruct the migration of salmonid species by fragmenting flow and isolating spawning grounds. These disruptions contribute to poor ecological status in many UK rivers, with barriers like weirs identified as a leading cause of failure to meet Water Framework Directive targets. This thesis investigates the ecological and managerial outcomes of small weir removals, focusing on changes in water quality, river connectivity, and the recovery of wild salmonid populations. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative analysis of water quality and fish population data with qualitative insights from stakeholder interviews. Case studies were conducted at Scotton Mill Weir (River Nidd), Snake Lane Weir (River Ecclesbourne), and Samlesbury Weir (River Ribble). Results show significant post-removal reductions in orthophosphate levels, modest improvements in nitrate concentrations, and an increased presence of salmonid species. However, the findings also reveal major gaps in post-removal monitoring and policy enforcement. Interviews with stakeholders from the Wild Trout Trust and The Rivers Trust highlighted that inconsistent data collection, limited funding, and unclear regulatory requirements hinder long-term ecological evaluation. Although small-scale weir removals can meaningfully support river restoration, their success depends on stronger governance, stable financial support, and mandatory, standardised monitoring frameworks

Dutch Zoos: From animals in cages, to leaders in nature conservation

    No full text
Anthropogenic climate change and human behavior are destroying the natural world, which is why it is essential to protect Earth’s biodiversity. Important actors in nature conservation are zoos. In this research, Burgers’ Zoo is the main case study, besides the exemplary cases Ouwehands Dierenpark and WILDLANDS Emmen. Burgers’ Zoo is being researched for its nature conservation and sustainability initiatives, analyzed with the concepts of CSR and greenwashing. Furthermore, it was researched what the Dutch government-mandated policy guidelines are for Dutch zoos, and the changing role of zoos. Through the research methods of content analysis, observations, and interviews, it became clear that zoos have become not only educational research centers, but also places where people can connect to nature. Burgers’ Zoo, together with Ouwehands and WILDLANDS, are supporting in-situ nature conservation projects all over the globe. Furthermore, Burgers’ Zoo is the owner of the golden certificate of Duurzaam Gastvrij, making it a sustainable actor. But despite this, Burgers’ Zoo is striving to become more sustainable every day and to increase its positive impact on society, nature, and the environment through Burgers’ Zoo's sheer internal motivation. Burgers’ Zoo truly is a socially responsible zoo and a leader in nature conservation

The Impact of Digitalization on Guanxi: Negotiation Strategies for Western Companies in the Chinese E-commerce Market

    No full text
Digital negotiations have become more common since the Covid-19 pandemic, including those between Chinese e-commerce suppliers and Western businesses. The adaptation of guanxi, the Chinese concept of trust, reciprocity, and emotional connection, to digital forms of negotiation is examined in this study. Guanxi is still important online, according to the research, which is based on interviews with both Chinese and Western professionals. However, trust is established through reputation, symbolic signals, and quick, sympathetic communication. Deeper relationships still benefit from physical contact. Western businesses are more successful when they use digital tools and act with cultural sensitivity. The study provides guidance for creating enduring online connections in a cross-cultural business-to-business setting

Price path variability and the disposition effect: do volatile paths affect the decision to sell?

    No full text
This study investigates whether price path variability influences the disposition effect, the tendency of investors to sell winning assets too early and hold on to losing assets too long. Based on prospect theory and prior work on visual risk perception, the study uses a survey experiment in which 124 participants are randomly assigned to one of three volatility treatments (low, average, or high). Each participant evaluates four price charts (two gain, two loss scenarios), generated using a Geometric Brownian Motion model, with visual volatility manipulated while holding trend, starting price, final price, and overall return constant across treatment groups. Willingness to sell is measured on a 7-point Likert scale, and the strength of the disposition effect is calculated as the difference between willingness to sell in gain versus loss scenarios. A one-way ANOVA reveals a statistically significant effect of volatility condition on disposition effect scores, with a Tukey HSD post-hoc test indicating that participants in the high-volatility condition exhibit a significantly stronger disposition effect than those in the low-volatility condition (p = .012). The findings suggest that higher visual volatility amplifies behavioral biases, highlighting the importance of graphical representation in financial decision-making. Tegenprestaties en donateurs op Voordekunst

    No full text

Ruimte maken, ruimte geven. Omgaan met de fysieke aspecten van de geestelijke verzorging

    No full text

    No full text

Bearing Witness to Maternal Subjectivities: Experiencing Pregnancy and Early Motherhood in Contemporary Irish Women’s Life Writing

    No full text
This thesis analyses experiences of pregnancy and motherhood in three contemporary works of Irish life writing, namely Sinéad Gleeson’s Constellations: Reflections from Life (2019), Doireann Ní Ghríofa’s A Ghost in the Throat (2021), and Alice Kinsella’s Milk: On Motherhood and Madness (2023). The introduction discusses the position of (pregnant) women and mothers from the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922 to contemporary Irish history. It continues by introducing the role of Irish literature in giving voice to women and, in particular, to mothers. It argues that the study of contemporary Irish women’s life writing on pregnancy and motherhood has not yet been approached through the discipline of motherhood studies, identifying the research gap that is at the centre of this thesis. The theoretical framework shows that contemporary feminism is moving towards an inclusion of maternal experiences. Andrea O’Reilly’s ten dictates of normative motherhood are introduced as a framework for the analyses of the three texts. The chapter continues by explaining how works of life writing can be read as testimonies. Lastly, it introduces and explains the theories of feminist phenomenology used in the analyses, namely Jonna Bornemark’s a-subjectivity and Susi Ferrarello’s dualism, embodied intersubjectivity, objectification, alienation, and a loss of identity. The narrated experiences of pregnancy in Constellations, Ghost, and Milk are the main focus of chapter 2. After identifying the dominant conceptualisations of the female body as ‘unpregnant’ and the pregnant body as a site for sin, profit, suffering, mystery, and powerlessness, which relate to O’Reilly’s dictates ‘essentialisation’, ‘idealisation’, and ‘depoliticalisation’, the analysis turns to how the authors are described to experience their own pregnant bodies. This analysis shows that objectification is a common experience in pregnancy. Feelings of alienation seem to originate in responsibility, rather than objectification, reflecting the dictate ‘intensification’. These descriptions are shown to problematise Ferrarello’s theory of embodied intersubjectivity. Furthermore, a loss of identity is seemingly absent in the authors’ depictions of pregnancy. Chapter 3 focuses on dominant conceptualisations of motherhood, identified as the sacrificial body, the private body, and the desexualised body. The discourses reflect the dictates ‘essentialisation’, ‘intensification’, ‘idealisation’, and ‘privatisation’. Experiences of objectification in early motherhood are shown to particularly involve breastfeeding. Alienation is, paradoxically, argued to both connect and disconnect. Ferrarello’s theory of Langhout 3 losing one’s identity and embodied intersubjectivity are both reflected upon and challenged, for example through the term ‘motherbaby’. The final chapter discusses how the autobiographical genre of the three texts is effective in challenging the identified dominant discourses on pregnancy and motherhood. The focus shifts to descriptions of the writing mother and how, by publishing these texts, the authors can be seen as activists, testifying to experiences of pregnancy and motherhood in Ireland. The conclusion answers the research question: How does contemporary Irish life writing on pregnancy and motherhood challenge dominant discourses of pregnancy and early motherhood in both content and genre? It reflects on O’Reilly’s, Ferrarello’s, and Bornemark’s theories as basis for literary analysis and suggests alterations that would enhance these theories to form more thorough frameworks
