Was This Title Generated by AI? How University Students Use and Experience AI for Academic Work.

    No full text
This thesis investigates how students perceive and experience the use of generative AI for academic work. While prior research has adopted quantitative approaches focused on behavioural predictors, this study employs qualitative, student-centred methodology to explore the practicalities, reasoning and emotions that determine AI use. Through in-depth interviews with eleven Dutch bachelor students, the study investigated the motivations and reflections behind their AI use. Thematic analysis revealed: (1) students strategically use AI to complete their work, particularly for repetitive/time-consuming tasks; (2) while appreciating convenience, students express ambivalence about AI’s long-term impacts on skill development; (3) ethical concerns about AI are acknowledged but outweighed by more direct academic consequences; (4) students view AI as inevitable to their future careers and advocate for clearer institutional guidelines to match. This challenges the idea of passive AI dependency by showing that students critically assess how to use AI. By focusing on students’ own perspectives, this study extends the literature on AI use in education and supports the need for policies that better reflect students’ lived academic experiences

"Masters of Land and Sea: Narratives of Control in Dutch Internal and External Settler Projects"

    No full text
The aim of this research project is to shed light on the importance of colonialism for Dutch national identity, with a specific focus on the tension between internal (domestic) and external (overseas) settler colonialism and their dominant narratives. To get a better insight into narratives and imaginaries of colonialism, the research project uses a comparative analysis of two museums that propose historical narratives of Dutch colonial histories. The concept of internal settler colonialism is not widely used; however, I see value in the term as it highlights shared characteristics between external and internal settler projects such as: The belief in human exceptionalism, and the capacity to reshape the world through scientific knowledge. These ideas played a significant role in both internal and external colonialism as they justified interventions into natural and social environments, positioning humans as separate from and superior to other life forms

Exploring the Dynamics of Governance-Related Uncertainties and Stakeholder Interaction in Regional Transport Planning: The Case of RegioExpres

    No full text
This thesis investigates how governance-related uncertainties and stakeholder interaction dynamics mutually influenced each other in the planning of the RegioExpres project, a high-frequency regional rail initiative in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Focusing on two planning phases (2018–2025), the study examines how uncertainties—namely problem framing ambiguity, role ambiguity, regulatory complexity, and financial uncertainty—emerge and evolve over time. Using document analysis and expert interviews, four types of uncertainty are analyzed in relation to interactional dimensions such as trust, deliberation, leadership, and mutual understanding. Findings reveal that while early coordination among regional actors remained intact, procedural and financial uncertainties increasingly strained interaction with national institutions and affected public trust. Informal leadership and protective local action emerged where formal coordination proved insufficient, especially in response to resident concerns. The study concludes that managing uncertainty in complex infrastructure planning requires not only procedural clarity, but also inclusive framing, responsive communication, and sustained engagement across governance levels

Automatic Quality Assessment of Datasets for Machine Learning

    No full text
This project explores data quality and it’s impact on machine learning performance. We introduce an assessment framework to au tomatically quantify the data quality of a given dataset based on the data quality dimen sions completeness, consistency, and accuracy. Datasets for the project were synthesized by systematically introducing quality issues of varying severity. Training a range of machine learning models on these datasets reveals the large impact of the completeness and accu racy dimensions on model performance, and a lower impact associated with the consistency of data. The framework effectively assesses data quality in dataset versions where a single dimension is degraded but it’s performance can be improved on versions with multiple degraded dimensions. Future work includes refining quality scores for the dimensions and extending the framework to include more ma chine learning tasks and models

Temperature extremes and income inequality: subnational evidence of Sub-Saharan Africa

    No full text
This research investigates the relationship between extreme temperatures and subnational income inequality across 428 regions in 40 Sub-Saharan African countries, spanning the years 2000-2022. Using a fixed-effects panel model with daily binned temperature data, it identifies a counterintuitive finding: an increase in extremely hot days (above 30°C) is associated with reductions in income inequality, particularly in the macro-region Eastern Africa. In contrast, cold temperatures (below 18°C) show a weaker and sometimes positive effect on income inequality, though not consistently across specifications. Additionally, this study explores agriculture as a potential transmission channel; while it appears to influence the temperature-income inequality relationship, it is unlikely the primary pathway. Overall, this research contributes to the literature by shifting the focus to subnational dynamics and highlighting the importance of daily temperature data in understanding income inequality outcomes. These insights carry practical relevance for policymakers, advocating for region-specific climate adaptation strategies. Keywords: income inequality, Gini index, climate change, extreme temperatures, SSA, agricultural transmission channe

The influence of ESG performance on corporate financial misconduct: the fraud triangle theory

    No full text
This research investigates the relationship between ESG performance and financial corporate misconduct in the US, using a dataset with 242 unique US-based companies from 2010 till 2020. A two-way fixed effect difference-in-differences (TWFEDD) regression is employed to analyze the relationship between ESG performance and corporate financial misconduct. For the TWFEDD regression, the scandal of Volkswagen in 2015 is chosen as the event, due to the increase of misconduct awareness and scrutinization, which should lower perceived opportunities and rationalization for committing fraud. In this regression, high ESG firms act as the treated group due to the higher media focus, which channels the increased pressure to mostly high ESG firms. The results indicate that high ESG firms before the Volkswagen scandal are significantly negatively correlated with corporate financial misconduct when compared to low ESG firms, as expected by the theory. But after the event, high ESG firms are significantly correlated with a lower decrease in corporate misconduct compared to low ESG firms, contradicting existing research. After further robustness tests using a propensity score matched and instrumental variable regression, it shows that both results are robust. Using different regression techniques and independent measures shows only robust results for the post-Volkswagen event result

Vipassanā and Dhammakaya: A Representation of the East through the Official English Websites of Two Modern Buddhist Movements

    No full text
This paper aims to examine the role of Eastern spirituality in the Western world by diving into the representation of the official English websites of two Modern Buddhist traditions, the Vipassanā Meditation tradition taught in the form of S.N Goenka and the Dhammakaya Movement. As both websites serve as sources of information and knowledge, they will be analysed on their depiction of the East and eventual Orientalist tropes they either reinforce or challenge. Keywords: Vipassanā, Dhammakaya, Eastern spirituality, representation, website, stereotypization, Orientalism, Othering, legitimacy, authority, irrationality, mystification

Gemeenschap aan het roer: Hoe een Community Land Trust kan bijdragen aan het aanbod van maatschappelijke voorzieningen

    No full text

    No full text

Power in the virtual hands of the longest-living culture in the world: decolonizing indigenous heritage tourism in Australia

    No full text
This thesis examines how Indijiverse, an Indigenous-led virtual reality platform, resists colonial frameworks in Indigenous heritage tourism in Australia. Using critical discourse analysis, the study investigates three key elements: performativity, 3D mapping, and Indigenous knowledge. Conventional heritage tourism often reinforces colonial narratives by presenting Indigenous culture as static, ancient, consumable, and performed. In contrast, Indijiverse reclaims Indigenous storytelling, space, and knowledge by using 3D mapping, gamification, and immersive design to engage users with pre-colonial landscapes and living cultural practices. Grounded in a theoretical framework of performativity, decoloniality, and heritage, this research argues that Indijiverse shifts power in the heritage tourism sector by resisting performative expectations, reconstructing access to sacred sites, and centering relational Indigenous knowledge systems. At last, this study emphasizes the importance of Indigenous-led heritage representation and challenges Western norms of cultural consumption in tourism. Keywords: Australia, decolonization, digital storytelling, Indijiverse, Indigenous heritage tourism, Indigenous knowledge, performativity, virtual reality
