The effect of color use in icon arrays and personal involvement on the intention of behavioral change.
How health risks are communicated affect how they are perceived and therefore the behavioral choices the public will make. This study aimed to investigate how color use and personal involvement level affect intention of behavioral change. Two sets of icon arrays about the risk of death by cardiovascular disease after eating different amounts of added sugar were created (black-and-white, color). Participants were randomly assigned to one of these two conditions and after seeing the icon arrays, answered questions about their added sugar intake. The median of Involvement was calculated, splitting into a high involvement and a low involvement group. Results of a two-way univariate ANOVA showed a main effect of involvement on behavioral intention, but no main effect of color and no significant interaction effect of involvement and color on intention to change behavior. These results support the importance of people’s involvement with a topic on their behavioral change
The signals behind the storm The role of ESG/CSR reputation and crisis history in shaping financial performance following product-harm crises
This research aims to examine how product-harm crises affect financial performance, and whether ESG/CSR reputation buffers and crisis history amplifies this effect, using signaling theory as the theoretical lens. Based on an event study of 1,080 product recall events from 420 publicly listed firms (2015–2023), the financial impact is assessed using cumulative abnormal returns and OLS regression. The findings show that product-harm crises function as credible, unintentional signals that negatively affect financial performance. ESG/CSR reputation operates as an intentional signal that buffers the negative impact of crises, confirming its role as an insurance mechanism. Crisis history was expected to intensify the market’s reactions through signal cascading, but the results were not significant. This study contributes to the literature by investigating unintentional and intentional signals, the insurance effect of reputation in specialised crisis events, and crisis history from a signaling theory perspective. This research indicates that managers should proactively manage their firm’s intentional and unintentional signals when navigating crises
Netwerksamenwerking in Amsterdam.
When Cyber Crises Strike: Dynamic Capabilities and their Effect on Firm Performance
As digital interconnectivity increases, cyber crises pose a growing threat to firms. This research investigates how dynamic capabilities, operationalized as knowledge accumulation capabilities through Research & Development expenditures and Information Technology investments, influence firm performance during cyber crises. Drawing on dynamic capabilities theory, this research aims to fill theoretical gaps by empirically testing four hypotheses using an event study design on S&P 500 firms affected by cyber crises between 2004 and 2023. The results reveal non-significant effects of knowledge accumulation capabilities on cumulative abnormal returns (CARs). A plausible explanation for these non-significant findings could be that the value of such investments is not reflected in short-term market reactions or depends on strategic and contextual fit. These findings challenge prior research on dynamic capabilities during crisis periods and invite future research to explore the long-term effects of dynamic capabilities and the influence of strategic and contextual fit
Women’s empowerment for sale: An analysis of the representation of women’s empowerment in the promotional fashion film
This thesis explores the dominant presence of a postfeminist sensibility in promotional fashion films
from the early 2000s to the late 2010s, analyzing its implications for the commercialization of
feminist ideas and symbols, such as women’s empowerment, to benefit luxury fashion brands.
Through semiotic and discourse analysis, the study compares postfeminist themes derived from the
examination of signs in these fashion films with feminist theories and film studies. This comparison
reveals the contradictory nature of a postfeminist sensibility, where the films’ portrayal of women
suggests empowerment but also confines them to patriarchal gender norms and beauty standards.
Therefore, it argues that the representation of feminism as a movement for social justice and gender
equity in the fashion film is often transformed into a depoliticized marketing tool that persuades
consumers to purchase products or emotionally connect with the brand. This thesis questions this
phenomenon and asserts that these representations of women should be critically examined to raise
awareness and prevent the internalization of antifeminist attitudes.
Keywords: promotional fashion film, postfeminist sensibility, women’s empowerment, feminism,
desire for newness, consumerism, luxury fashion brand
How global citizenship education can contribute to decolonizing knowledge and classrooms in Dutch high schools
This thesis explores how global citizenship education can contribute to the decolonization of knowledge and education in Dutch high schools. There is more need for a citizenship that transcends borders in a world that feels globalized but also unequal. Such inequality is rooted in historical power relations and systems of oppression. Engaging responsibly with this inequality calls for the decolonization of education and knowledge. This thesis answers the question: “How can global citizenship education contribute to the decolonization of education and knowledge in Dutch high schools?”. Through participant observation during global citizenship education project, informal conversations with teachers and students, and interviews, this thesis argues GCE contributes by fostering familiarity with global inequality. Students engaged more with topics they found familiar or relevant. Global citizenship education teaches high school students about their privilege and addresses emotional and political discomfort. It does in other ways disconnect from decolonizing discourses, by teaching in current education systems, that overvalue Eurocentric knowledge. It also risks reinforcing a White Saviourist attitude. Students often avoided unfamiliar or discomforting issues, highlighting a need for guided reflection. For global citizenship education to fully align with decolonial aims, it must adopt a structural, time-intensive approach that values diverse epistemologies
Procedural Justice and Public Opposition. An Analysis of Procedural Justice as an explanatory framework for the Opposition against the New Energy Plant of Nijmegen.
With climate change demanding a rapid and large-scale transition to sustainable energy, sustainability projects must be implemented efficiently. This transition requires fundamental spatial changes that directly reshape people’s living environments. Because these projects affect local communities, they often trigger opposition. Understanding and reducing such opposition is crucial to prevent delays and ensure a just transition.
This research examines to what extent the concept of procedural justice can explain public opposition to new energy projects. The study focuses on the case of a new energy plant in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, where significant protests emerged. Procedural justice is operationalised here through six measurable characteristics. Using semi-structured interviews and document analysis, the research investigates how these characteristics were formally addressed in policy and how they were experienced by stakeholders.
The findings reveal discrepancies between the municipality’s policy design and residents’ lived experiences. Although formal procedures were followed, many stakeholders perceived the process as unfair. In particular, shortcomings in information distribution, participation timing, and opportunities for real influence explain much of the opposition. This case shows how procedural justice offers a valuable framework to understand and address resistance to energy projects
