From Risk to Revenue: Using Land Value Capture to Finance Flood Infrastructure in the Ciliwung Basin, Indonesia

    No full text
Indonesia faces growing challenges in financing critical climate adaptation infrastructure, such as flood protection, due to limited public budgets. Large projects span multiple jurisdictions, raising questions about funding responsibilities. Land Value Capture (LVC) offers a potential solution by enabling governments to recover part of the land value increase. Presidential Regulation 79/2024 has introduced a national legal framework for LVC, but its practical implementation remains uncertain. This thesis asks: How have past practices and institutional conditions shaped the prospects for implementing LVC as a legitimate financing mechanism for flood protection infrastructure in Indonesia? Focusing on the Ciliwung Basin, it examines how past financing practices influence current expectations, how the new regulation is perceived by local actors, and which rationales for LVC are considered fair. The study applies a qualitative design, combining document analysis and expert interviews. Findings show that earlier negotiated practices fostered incentive-based thinking that continues to shape notions of fairness and feasibility. While development gain skimming is broadly supported when contributions are transparent and linked to public benefits, cost equivalency models rely heavily on institutional trust. Despite the new regulation, weak capacity and low public trust persist. A hybrid approach, combining tax-based and cost-recovering strategies, appears most promising

Perspective-taking; its effectiveness in improving listeners’ attitudes towards speakers with a regional accent.

    No full text
This study examined whether a perspective-taking intervention could reduce negative attitudes toward speakers with regional Dutch accents, focusing on the Brabants accent. In a between-subjects experiment, 253 native Dutch participants listened to a speaker with either a weak or moderate Brabants accent and were assigned to either a perspective-taking or control condition. They rated the speaker on comprehensibility and three attitude dimensions: warmth, dynamism, and superiority. The intervention improved social evaluations, particularly on superiority, but did not affect comprehensibility. Contrary to expectations, its effects were not influenced by accent strength or familiarity, suggesting the benefits of perspective-taking are robust across these factors. Accent strength influenced competence-related evaluations, while warmth appeared more stable—possibly due to positive stereotypes of the Brabants accent. These findings show that empathy-based interventions can improve attitudes even toward in-group regional variation, contributing to research on reducing subtle, language-based biases. Keywords: perspective-taking, regional accent, Brabants, attitudes, comprehensibility, familiarity

How do organizations build and enact paradoxical thinking to manage conflicting stakeholder interests?

    No full text
Organizations increasingly face persistent tensions between conflicting stakeholder demands, such as profitability versus sustainability. While paradoxical thinking, the ability to accept and integrate such contradictions, has been studied at the individual level, little is known about how it develops as an organizational capability. This study addresses that gap by examining how organizations build and enact paradoxical thinking to manage stakeholder tensions. Using Leonard-Barton’s core capability framework, four building blocks are investigated: collective capability to navigate stakeholder tensions, supportive managerial systems for paradox engagement, system-enabled visibility and coordination of tensions, and cultural alignment with paradoxical thinking. A qualitative multiple-case study of six organizations was conducted using semi-structured interviews. The findings show that paradoxical thinking is enacted through the dynamic interaction of people, systems, and culture. Internal alignment, psychological safety, and flexible coordination enable organizations to engage tensions constructively. The study concludes that paradoxical thinking is not a fixed trait but an evolving capability shaped by organizational routines and values

The dark side of empowering leadership: to what extent is the relationship between empowering leadership and work stress of employees moderated by leader trust, and mediated by job autonomy?

    No full text
A decline in mental health is a trend and therefore also a major concern in the Netherlands. Recent studies identify work stress as a major factor in stress among adults and a cause of mental breakdown. While empowering leadership is often associated with positive employee outcomes, such as increased motivation, other studies suggest that empowering leadership may also contribute to negative effects, including work stress. This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between empowering leadership and work stress, especially by studying the potential dark side of empowering leadership. As well as studying the relationship between empowering leadership and work stress, through the moderating role of leader trust and the mediating role of job autonomy. The leader-member exchange theory is used as a theoretical framework, assuming that the interpersonal relationship may be an explanatory factor. This study contributes to the literature by not looking at the positive side of empowering leadership but at the possible negative effects on work stress. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 333 respondents, including individual employees and dyads (supervisor and employee). The results indicate that empowering leadership significantly increases job autonomy, however, it does not have a direct or mediated effect on work stress. Furthermore, leader trust did not significantly moderate the relationship between empowering leadership and work stress or job autonomy. These findings suggest that while empowering leadership increases job autonomy, its effect on work stress may be more complex. Therefore, further research is needed to explore the contextual factors influencing the dark side of empowering leadership

Building the future of health care: exploring the relational coordination process of informal caregivers

    No full text
With an ageing population and a growing shortage of formal caregivers, many countries are increasingly relying on informal caregivers. This development highlights the need to strengthen the collaboration between formal and informal givers. In an effort to improve their coordination, this research explores relational coordination theory as a potential framework. Therefore, the aim of this research is to answer the question: ‘’How do informal caregivers engage in relational coordination with formal caregivers?’’ A Dutch dementia nursing home was selected for an in-depth case study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve informal caregivers to explore their coordination process with formal caregivers. While existing relational coordination networks have primarily focused on formal caregivers, this study provides empirical evidence that these networks can be extended to include informal caregivers. The subdimensions of relational coordination theory were applied to analyse both the positioning of informal caregivers in relation to formal caregivers and the approach taken by formal caregivers towards informal caregivers. This research contributes to the existing literature by offering new insights into the relational coordination process, particularly regarding the interrelatedness of the subdimensions, and the role of cross-cutting structural elements (shared spaces, shared information systems, shared meetings, shared accountability, and proactive horizontal conflict resolution) and microprocesses (psychological safety and dependency)

Female travel influencers and authenticity labor on Instagram

    No full text
This thesis analyzed how female travel influencers claim authenticity through showing different degrees of transparency and passion in paid Instagram reels. Thirty sponsored reels from ten influencers were examined in a qualitative case study approached. The analysis was based on Audrezet et al.’s framework about authenticity strategies. The results reveal that by far most female travel influencers use the Path of Fairytale Authenticity which prioritizes passion while minimizing the showcase of transparency. Particularly, most of them use storytelling as a technique to embed products into creative narratives. The findings suggest that female travel influencers strategically shift the focus of their content on passion for products and away from the commercial nature of their reels to establish emotional connections to their viewers and thereby convince them of the product’s purchase. Keywords: authenticity, authenticity labor, authenticity strategies, social media influencers, travel influencers, female influencer

Narratives Rooted in Ta Prohm’s Trees: An Analysis of Tourist Narratives in Travel Guides and Travel Blogs about the Angkor Temple Ta Prohm, Cambodia

    No full text
Ta Prohm, one of the Angkor temple ruins in Cambodia, is known for its silk-cotton and strangler fig trees. This thesis investigates the narratives and meanings constructed around these trees. Despite the prominent role that these trees play in the site’s visual identity, their cultural significance in tourism media has remained underexplored. By conducting a qualitative content and narrative analysis of two Lonely Planet travel guides and nine English travel blogs, this research identifies dominant narratives that determine the identity of Ta Prohm. These analyses were conducted through the theoretical lenses of nostalgia, Ning Wang’s typology of authenticity, John Urry’s theory of the romantic, mediatised, anthropological, and family gazes, and Laurajane Smith’s theory about the authorised heritage discourses (AHD) of the wilderness and the pastoral. Narratives of romance, enchantment, authenticity, and adventure were found, reinforcing the existing identities of Ta Prohm: the Jungle Temple and the Tomb Raider Temple. Though the travel blogs mostly mirrored the dominant narratives found in the travel guides, they also provided additional perspectives, portraying nature as monstrous, highlighting the possibility of reflecting on modernity and looking at Ta Prohm through an anthropological gaze. This research revealed how tourists cocreate and interpret narratives individually, both challenging and reflecting the dominant heritage discourses found in tourism media

    No full text

    No full text
