Selling the Jubilee: The Eternal City’s Marketing Strategies - An Instagram-Based Analysis of Official and Unofficial Stakeholders' Narrative

    No full text
The Jubilee is a major religious event that takes place every 25 years and brings millions of visitors to Rome. Such an influx presents economic and promotional opportunities as well as challenges for the city. This thesis investigates how the ongoing Jubilee 2025 is promoted on Instagram by both official and unofficial stakeholders, presenting their respective narratives. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on several Instagram accounts: three official, including @italiait, @robertogualtieri, and @iubilaeum25, and two unofficial, including @welcometogiubileo and @turismo_criminale, covering posts published between June 2024 and May 2025. The analysis reveals a strong duality between the two communication strategies: institutional accounts promote the event as a great opportunity to enhance Rome’s international image; in contrast, unofficial accounts report the everyday struggles of some residents, including inflation, overcrowding, and urban degradation. These two narratives show the tension between promotional communication and residents' experiences. This research highlights the importance of including residents’ perspectives in local authorities’ communication strategies, especially in a platform like Instagram, where people’s voices can gain significant visibility

    No full text

The Role of Prior AI Experience in Evaluating Human vs. LLM-Generated Rationales for Disaster Tweet Classification.

    No full text
The rapid growth of large language models (LLMs) has led to a phenomenon where various industries are using LLMs in workplaces. Rationales as reasonings behind AI-generated decisions play a critical role in building trust and transparency in human-AI collaboration. The current study aims to examine how does individual’s prior experience with AI influence their perceived reliability and consistency of rationales in a disaster-related context. 114 participants completed the survey online via Qualtrics, where they were presented with the tweets, classifications, and rationales. No significant interaction effect among prior AI experience, type of rationales, perceived reliability and consistency was found, suggesting people with different levels of prior AI experience do not evaluate the reliability and consistency of the rationales differently, regardless of the generators. An unexpected significance was that people with high prior AI experience evaluated the consistency of the rationales more positively than those with low prior AI experience

No Girls Allowed How esports tourism can become more inclusive by increasing the participation of women gamers at live events

    No full text
This thesis examines how esports tourism can become more inclusive by increasing the participation of women gamers at live events. Despite comprising a substantial share of the global gaming population, women remain underrepresented as both players and spectators in esports. Through a qualitative case study of the Counter-Strike franchise (CS:GO and CS2), this research draws on semi-structured interviews with women gamers to explore the structural and cultural barriers they face. Findings reveal that experiences of harassment, exclusion, and gender-based stereotyping significantly impact women's willingness to attend live esports events. Additionally, industry practices, such as the male-centric design of games and the lack of enforcement around toxic behaviour, further deter participation. Participants highlighted the importance of safe, community-based spaces and expressed a desire for events that prioritise inclusivity and representation. Based on these insights, the thesis proposes actionable strategies for fostering gender inclusion in esports tourism. These include improving moderation systems, diversifying in-game representation, and offering alternative, low-pressure engagement formats at live events. By centring women's perspectives, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of gender dynamics in esports and offers practical recommendations for creating more equitable and welcoming tourism experiences. Keywords: esports, tourism, gender inclusion, Counter-Strike, women gamers, gaming culture, live even

(Mindful) sharenting: a balance between motivations and ethical considerations

    No full text
This thesis explores how and why parents practice “mindful sharenting”, a form of sharenting where a child’s privacy is purposely protected. Marketing literature views sharenting as an individual’s decision, whereas this thesis draws on Reckwitz’s (2002) practice theory, focusing on sharenting as a social practice influenced by routines, meanings, objects, and skills. Two key questions are explored in this research: (1) What are parents’ motivations for mindfully sharenting about their children? And (2) How do parents mindfully sharent about their children? These questions are addressed through a qualitative research design of semi-structured interviews and a netnographic case study. Findings reveal that mindful sharenters are driven by parental pride and a feeling of connection, but combined with long-term concern for their children’s privacy, authenticity, and skepticism of online platforms. Key techniques include capturing the child from behind, showing only parts of the child’s body, or restricted visibility when accounts are private. Standard sharenters tend to engage more in intuitive sharing, with less critical reflection around possible risks. The conclusion is that sharenting is not only an individual’s decision but is part of a broader social set of practices, influenced by emotional meanings, the perceived safety of online platforms, and online skills. These insights contribute to marketing and interdisciplinary research by introducing sharenting as a practice-based approach

A Common Currency of Motivation: How Curiosity and Reward Shape the Brain’s Memory Systems

    No full text
Curiosity and reward incentives, respectively representing intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, have both been found to be effective motivators of memory formation, but previous findings on a potential interaction effect between the two have not agreed. It is also still not clear how the two motivators are similarly or dissimilarly represented in the brain in support of memory formation, with the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) as a contestant of curiosity processing and the vmPFC and anterior hippocampus as regions in support of value-based, motivated memory. Therefore, we used an adapted version of the trivia paradigm to understand the main effects of curiosity and reward incentives and their interaction on immediate same-day and delayed 7-day later recall performance whilst we recorded participants’ BOLD activity in the MRI scanner. We found that curiosity robustly predicted increased recall likelihood whilst reward incentives improved recall only for the lowest and highest reward levels, and conversely, the interaction effect between curiosity and reward on recall likelihood was found to be significant for medium-high rewards only. Further exploratory analysis showed as the trials progressed, a decreasing and eventually detrimental effect of reward on recall that was ameliorated as curiosity went up. Neurally, we found both positive and negative modulation in the inferior parietal cortex (IPL) and only negative activity in the ventral medial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in support of both curiosity- and reward-motivated memory. Anterior hippocampal (aHPC) activity during encoding was not found to correlate with motivated memory formation whilst it did positively predict remembered trials over forgotten trials without considering either motivator. Further research should look into more specific IPL hypotheses of motivated memory formation and should focus on anticipatory hippocampal activity, instead of activity during encoding, in support of motivated memory formation. Additionally future work should look at the neural correlates of time-dependent motivated memory effects. Our findings can inform both educational researchers and educators to look out for temporally-dynamic negative effects of extrinsic rewards on memory formation – and the potential benefit of high curiosity-fostering study material in reducing their effect

    No full text

Ecovillages as Incubators for Degrowth? – A Critical Discourse Analysis on Degrowth in the Aardehuis-Olst Ecovillage

    No full text
Nowadays, six out of the nine Planetary Boundaries have been transgressed as a result of human activity. Degrowth, although it has been perpetually contested, surfaced as a viable alternative to tackle economic growth and prevent a complete ecological breakdown. The interest in ecovillages has soared in the previous decades due to the increasing need for more sustainable lifestyles. Many claim that ecovillage communities facilitate as laboratories, social, sustainable and degrowth practices. This research delves into the understanding of the ecovillage-concept in connection with the degrowth theory by conducting a case study on a Dutch ecovillage, Aardehuis-Olst. Through conducting interviews and field observations, the study shares a deeper insight using Fairclough’s (1992) Critical Discourse Analysis of how degrowth is being practiced and talked about in the community. The most paramount feature of the thesis represents the uncovering the alignment with Parrique’s ‘15 Principles of Degrowth’ and how they appear in the community. The results have suggested that vocabulary, as discourse tool, represents the true values of the residents of the ecovillage. Even though some misalignments were detected to Parrique’s (2019) principles, linguistic analysis shed light on Sharing, Value sovereignty and Relational goods being the most relevant and present degrowth principles

    No full text

    No full text
