『日本奥地紀行』における色彩―イザベラ・バードの目に映った横浜～東京の色
Get PDF本稿は、イギリス出身の女性旅行家イザベラ・ バードが1878年日本滞在中における自身の体験を記した旅行記『日本奥地紀行』で使用されている色彩語に着目することで、バードの景観認識の傾向を読み取る。その際、なかでも横浜から東京近郊の場面を特に考察対象としている。概して来日初期のバードは日本の風景を淡い色、あるいは灰色や青を基調とした色でとらえているが、そうした描写の中でもしばしば赤系統を中心とした色彩語を用いており、それがバードが「単調」と形容した日本の景観を描写する際に、風景の中に色鮮やかなフォーカルポイントを作り出している。さらには、ジャポニズムなどの当時西洋で流行していた芸術運動とその品々、もしくは当時の言説や思想からの影響が、風景や日本人の容姿に関する描写や記述に用いる色彩語の選択に影響を与えており、バードはときに色眼鏡をかけて日本を眺めていたこともあきらかになる。
This article examines the use of colour-related words in Isabella L. Bird’s Unbeaten Tracks in Japan, an account of this British-born woman traveller’s own experiences during her stay in Japan in 1878. It analyses the patterns in Bird’s perception of the Japanese landscape, with particular focus on scenes in Yokohama and Tokyo. Generally, her early depictions of the Japanese landscape are characterised by pale hues and shades of grey and blue. However, while doing so, she also frequently uses red-coloured terms or other similar bright tones, which serve to create focal points within the otherwise “monotonous” landscape. Furthermore, the influence of Western artistic movements, notably Japonism, and contemporary racial discourses in the West can be seen in her choice of colour terminology. This suggests that her portrayal of the landscape and the Japanese people was sometimes shaped by cultural and aesthetic preconceptions of the West.Article特集 文学は国境を超えてdepartmental bulletin pape
