Previous studies have examined how to encourage students to use student counseling services and decreases the stigma associated with receiving the services. However, the effects of phrasing used to describe the service, the term of “counseling service”, and previous counseling experience on help-seeking from the service and the stigma have not been investigated. This study examined whether help-seeking intention from student counseling services and the associated stigma was different depending on whether the phrasing used to describe the content of the service was positive or negative, whether the term “student counseling” was used, and whether the student had previous counseling experiences. We conducted a web-based survey of university students and graduate students. Three-way ANOVA revealed a significant secondary interaction between the phrasing used to describe the counseling service and previous counseling experiences on the help-seeking intention as the main result. The simple main effect test showed that the simple main effect of the phrasing was significant in the no-counseling experience group, and the score of the positive presentation group was higher than that of the negative presentation group. These findings suggest that using positive expressions to describe and advertise student counseling services among students without previous counseling experience would help promote counseling-seeking behavior.

In The Tale of Genji, the narrators seem to be old ladies-in-waiting in close service to Genji. Although they rarely appear overtly in the tale, we can detect their existence through the usage of honorifics. In rare cases, the narrators may appear openly to express their opinions. From the medieval period, such passages have been called sōshiji. They have been the focus of much scholarly scrutiny. This paper will focus on how sōshiji have been translated in the major English translations of The Tale of Genji, the first of which appeared in the Meiji period more than a century ago. Awareness of the presence of the narrator is an important factor in appreciating the style of The Tale of Genji. Yet for readers used to modern fiction, the presence of a narrator may somewhat old-fashioned. Perhaps because of this, some modern Japanese translations of The Tale of Genji hardly use honorifics, largely erasing the narrator's presence. After examining two translations into modern Japanese, we analyze how sōshiji passages have been rendered into English.Article特集 文学は国境を超えてdepartmental bulletin pape
