The Role of the A & P Committee in Mentoring Untenured Library Faculty

A&P will meet with untenured faculty to discuss issues and procedures, including the formal mentoring process, relating to reappointment, promotion, and continuing appointment. The meeting should take place before the first evaluation for reappointment.

Each candidate for promotion will be assigned a committee consisting of three tenured librarians to act as a mentoring committee. The members of the mentoring committee will be chosen by the Library Director in consultation with the candidate, the candidate’s supervisor, and the A&P Committee. The mentoring committee should be in place by the beginning of the candidate’s second year as a member of the library faculty.

In order to support these activities, A&P should receive a copy of the letter sent to new librarians that lists important dates relating to their evaluations for reappointment promotion, and continuing appointment.

In addition, for A&P to play a constructive role in the reappointment process, a copy of the supervisor’s evaluation and the Faculty Achievement Form should be made available to the committee with the consent of the candidate.

A&P will organize one or two open meetings every year to discuss the promotion process. Librarians with continuing appointment will be asked to share their thoughts and experiences about the process.

AUTUMN HARVEST HAPPENING:
Set aside some time in your work day to attend this festival on Wednesday, October 26, 
10:00 - noon in Javits Room.  Bring a dessert or other dish along with copies of the 
recipe for it.  Cider, coffee and tea will be provided.
Also, Hanne has created a lovely, practical apron to be raffled.  It is handpainted, but 
washable, with an autumn design.  It is on display at Hanne's desk!  Raffles at 50 cents 
each will be sold the day of the festival.  Proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity.
We would like to gather the library staff together at noon to go outdoors (provided 
weather is not stormy).  We will stand together on the steps leading down to the Staller 
Center.  At holiday time we may use this photo as our greeting card.  (There is an 
example of such a card on Maryanne's counter.) 
UPCOMING MIND AND SPIRITS:
Dan Kinney spent part of last winter /spring on sabbatical .  His area of study was related to music history .

House perhaps)
Location: All Souls Episcopal Church , Stony Brook
Description: The program will be a lecture-recital on the 1854 Henry Erben tracker organ at All Souls 
Episcopal Church, Stony Brook on the Harbor.  The work of Henry Erben, an important  
nineteenth-century American organ builder, will be discussed, and  the organ will be demonstrated with 
musical selections by nineteenth-century American composers and French organist/composer Alexandre 
Guilmant, who had a significant influence on American organists and organ music through his recitals in 
the U.S. and the Guilmant Organ School in New York City.  The lecture-recital was part of Dan's 
sabbatical project on the history of music in the Three Village/Port Jefferson area before the university 
was established.  He gave this presentation for  the Three Village Historical Society's 2004 Candlelight 
Tour.  The historical society asked him to do the lecture-recital again for the 2005 tour on December 2-3.  
The performance will be in the historic church, which was designed by noted architect Stanford White, 
built in 1889, and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.  The church will be 
decorated for the 2005 Candlelight Tour.  (This description was submitted by Dan.)
A.C.R.L. PROGRAM:
2005 SYMPOSIUM is to be held on Friday, December 2, 2005 at Baruch College, City University of New 
York.  Members pay $70.00 and non-members pay $80.00.  Janet Clarke is collecting the checks for this 
symposium.
