    Health Benefits of Specialty Agricultural Products from Wakayama

    果物、野菜、スパイスなどの植物性食品はそれらがもつ天然物質による作用により、様々な健康効果を発揮する。健康に有益な植物性食品は機能性食品とも呼ばれ、健康長寿のために関心が高まっている。和歌山県は植物性食品である農産物の生産が盛んであり、ウメ、ミカン、モモ、柿、山椒、ジャバラなどの生産量は全国でも上位に位置する。本稿では、特に心血管疾患、骨粗鬆症、アレルギー、不妊症および疲労に対する、これらの農産物の健康効果を我々の研究を中心に紹介する。Plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, and spices, exert various health benefits due to the effects of their natural compounds. Plant foods that are beneficial to health are also called ‘functional foods’, and interest in them is increasing in relation to attaining healthy longevity. Wakayama Prefecture is one of Japan’s leading producers of agricultural products, with production volumes of Japanese plum/apricot( Prunus mume), Satsuma mandarin orange( Citrus unshiu), peach( Prunus persica), Japanese persimmon( Diospyros kaki), Japanese pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum), and Jabara (Citrus × jabara Tanaka) among the highest in Japan. This article focuses on our research on the health benefits of these agricultural products, especially on cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, allergies, infertility and fatigue.Reviewdepartmental bulletin pape

    Change in H-reflex amplitude associated with cognitive load

    During voluntary movements like walking, the spinal cord regulates functions such as motor and posture control and through inputs from higher cortical areas such as the motor cortex, and from peripheral sources such as the skin and muscle spindles. When cognitive processes are involved during voluntary movements, further input from higher cortical areas may also modulate the spinal cord function. To investigate how changes in the functioning of the higher central nervous system responsible for cognitive functions affect spinal cord function, the amplitude of H-reflexes was induced in the gastrocnemius muscle during a choice reaction time task and a numerical comparison task. Response times to visual stimuli increased in the order of the choice reaction time task and the numerical comparison task. Furthermore, the amplitude of the H-reflex increased as the response times increased. Our findings suggest that changes in activity of the higher central nervous system such as the parietal association cortex and the prefrontal cortex (which are thought to be active in this task) may modulate the degree of spinal cord disinhibition and, in turn, regulate motor function.Original Articlearticl

    Associated factors of mechanical stress on the knee joint during walking in patients with knee osteoarthritis

    Knee osteoarthritis affects a large number of people in Japan, so prevention and therapeutic intervention is important. Management and evaluation of knee osteoarthritis are therefore necessary. In recent years, with the advancement of 3D gait analysis technology, many studies have been conducted on factors related to mechanical stress during gait. We reviewed the factors related to mechanical stress during gait from a biomechanical perspective. We focused upon knee adduction moment and knee joint compression force, mechanical load indicators that utilize 3D gait analysis, and musculoskeletal simulation technology, and outline the current nowledge and treatment strategies. Studies reported in the literature are mostly of basic research and have not been derived from clinical practice. Clinical research utilizing these technologies will hopefully lead to the evelopment of more evidence-based prevention and treatment interventions for knee osteoarthritis.Review Articlereview articl

    2023 Japanese national examination for rehabilitation professionals and Chat GPT: Chat GPT passed the national examination for speech-language-hearing therapists.

    Background: The use of Chat GPT is rapidly expanding in Japanese society,and the educational community is considering appropriate uses of it. The medical education sector, including training schools for rehabilitation professionals, is also actively engaged in discussion of effective ways to use Chat GPT. The 25th National Examination for Speech Therapists and the 58th National Examination for Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists were held in February 2023. The pass rates of Speech, Physical, and Occupational therapists were 67.4%, 87.4%, and 83.8%, respectively. Analysis of the results of answers by Chat GPT compared with those by actual students will hopefully facilitate discussion of how to use Chat GPT in the education of rehabilitation professionals. Methods: We used Chat GPT 3.5 to answer the questions from the 25th National Examination for Speech Therapists, which had the lowest pass rate among the three exams for rehabilitation specialists, and because it was mainly based on language-based questions and not heavily affected by the use of figures and charts. Results: Chat GPT had a 66% correct answer rate, which was above the level to pass the examinations. The scores were purely based on understanding of language-based questions, but Chat GPT had a comparable ability to our students in correctly answering questions from the exam. Conclusions: This study is the first to show that Chat GPT has the capability to pass a national medical examination. AI is still in relative infancy, but our results show that there is wide potential for academic and education application beyond clerical work. Further studies will seek to elucidate more precise potential use in academic settings.Original Articlearticl
