Autonomous learning course for advanced medical English
Background: Medical English is one of the most rapidly developing fields, and classroom learning may not be sufficient to keep up to date for actual practice. Therefore, students need to acquire the ability to autonomously adapt to ever-changing situations in order to communicate their work. This course aimed at developing autonomous learners.
Methods: An English for specific purposes approach was used to make students aware of the concepts of the language used for professional communication. Students were guided in Observing the structures and forms used, Classifying what they had observed, Hypothesizing about the features and finally Applying what they had learned for their own communicative purposes. This OCHA process was used to have the students examine the target task for its Purpose, intended Audience, the Information it was meant to convey, and the Language features used to present it. These were the PAIL features of the target text. Students were also introduced to the use of corpus linguistics and machine translation tools. The last class was a mock international academic conference where the students experienced giving oral and poster presentations in English, with question and answer sessions.
Results: All students completed their papers and gave oral and poster presentations on the final day. The presentations were well received by the disciplinary professors who participated as the audience, contributing to a great boost in student confidence.
Conclusion: This half-year autonomous learning course for advanced medical English communication demonstrated that it is possible for students who are not highly proficient in English to learn how to read and write research papers in English and also give oral and poster research presentations in English.ORIGINAL ARTICLEothe
Cognitive aging and cognitive reserve
A patient’s behavior and cognition are important considerations in psychiatric practice. Elderly people show wide range of differences in cognition and behavior. Along with other physical effects of aging, there are morphological and biochemical changes in the brain that affect age-related cognitive decline. Elderly people have accumulated a variety of differing psychological and social experiences throughout their lifetime, including childhood and educational experiences, experiences in their working lives, and other psychological and social experiences. Individual differences among elderly people can therefore be so great that it is inappropriate to group them together into a dichotomy of normal or abnormal aging, and it is perhaps better to view aging as a spectrum with a series of continuities from health to disease. ‘Successful and unsuccessful aging’ is a concept which considers a wide spectrum of cognitive decline, in which dementia may be placed at the extreme end of the spectrum of ‘unsuccessful aging’. The importance of cognitive reserve has been pointed out as the ability to maintain cognitive function against aging and pathological changes in the brain. Although the concept of cognitive reserve is not yet fully formed, clinicians should always give it broad consideration in the psychiatric treatment of elderly people.REVIEW ARTICLEothe

Development of an Inexpensive Gaze Tracing System and the Evaluation of Validity
視線計測は近年、心理学・医学・工学などの分野において高い注目を集めている。しかしながら、視線計測システムは現在も開発途上にあるため、安価ではなく気軽に導入できる技術ではない。近年では低コスト視線計測デバイスも開発されているが、研究目的での使用には制限がある。本研究では低コスト視線計測デバイスで計測した視点を座標化する技術を開発した。このシステムによって計測された視点の座標とモニターに提示されたシグナルの座標の誤差は、視角2度の範囲内に収まった。さらにウェーブレット解析では対象物を追う滑動性眼球運動が3.0Hz以下の成分を選択的に解析することで、本システムでも正確にデータ取得できた。探索課題では、課題の難易度が上昇することによって、様々な領域に視点が移動し、視点の総軌跡長が長くなることが明らかになった。以上のことから本システムはモニターを用いた視線計測システムとして有効であると考えられる。Gaze tracing has been widely used in fields such as psychology, medicine, and engineering. However, the eye trackers are so expensive and it is not a technology that can be feel free to used. Although the low-cost eye trackers are recently available, there are several limitations to the use for scientific researches. In this study, we developed the real time recording system of gaze point using a low-cost eye tracker. The error between the coordinates of the viewpoint measured by this system and those of the signal presented on the monitor was within the range of 2 degrees of vision angle. In addition, the smooth pursuit eye movement could be detected by the wavelet analysis using the data in low-frequency bandwidth of less than 3.0 Hz. The total moving distance of view point was longer in difficult exploration tasks than in easy ones. How can rehabilitation specialists write high-quality scientific English papers?
[Objectives:] The objectives of this review are to familiarize rehabilitation specialists or students with rules of effective English-writing and to improve the writing quality of their rehabilitation papers for scientific publication. [Method:] Based on the format of author's monograph Examples in Writing English Medical Papers for the 21st Century, I compiled examples of scientific writings. Those examples were mainly adapted over the years from past pre-submitted manuscripts to the program of young doctors' development at Taipei Medical University-Wan Fang Medical Center, requesting for the service of copy-editing before manuscript were submitted to journals for consideration for publication. Some of them were from submitted manuscripts to the Taiwanese Journal of Psychiatry (www.e-tjp.org). [Results:] For clear, effective English-writing, I introduce briefly in this article the rules of 10 do's and don'ts (using correct grammar, writing simpler sentences, varying writing styles, using more active voice writing, avoiding redundancies, reducing the use of Latinate words, choosing strong verbs, using correct parallel construction, avoiding empty words or phrases, and choosing correct specific words). Then, I show the actual hands-on copy-edited changes of sample sentences from original versions to revisions in writing the introduction, methods, results, discussion, and abstract sections of manuscripts. I also explain and illustrated in those sampled rehabilitation writings. [Conclusion:] I hope that the rehabilitation specialists and students can have some ideas how to write and improve high-quality English papers in their future preparation of scientific rehabilitation manuscripts after your reading this article carefully.Review Articleothe
A Home Care Support Program to Promote the Activities and Participation of Adults with Cerebral Palsy : A Case Report : Effectiveness of a Purposeful Electrical Stimulation Approach
成人脳性麻痺により、 活動と参加を制限、 制約された対象者に対し、 合目的的活動と電気刺激療法を組み合わせた訪問作業療法を実施した。 その結果、 麻痺側の痙性が軽減され寝返り動作の再獲得およびリーチ動作のコントロールの向上が観察された。 また、 本事例と母親の希望である馬に乗ることができたので報告する。 開始当初の本事例は、 情動反応により一時的に全身の筋を過剰に緊張させ、 上肢動作の一連の流れを視線で追うことができなかった。 合目的的活動と電気刺激療法を約1年間実施した後、 情動反応による全身の過剰な筋緊張が緩和され上肢動作の追視が確認された。 それによって、 電気刺激と合目的的活動が、 全身の筋緊張のコントロールの改善に寄与することが示唆された。Case Reportdepartmental bulletin pape
One Year Experience of Osaka Kawasaki Rehabilitation University Under COVID-19
The year of 2020 started with COVID-19 pandemic, which affected all aspects of our social life including educational activity of university. Osaka Kawasaki Rehabilitation University was one of a few universities in Japan which recorded no infected students as of February 2 2021. We had to shut down our university campus due to the declaration of emergency by Government during April and May, 2020. We started the class step by step in June and we were able to reopen the full schedule of classes in July 2020, completing the first semester two weeks behind schedule. We started the second semester with the modified curriculum which enabled us to switch from face-to-face class into the hybrid classes as soon as the third wave of pandemic attacked Osaka area. We continued our classes in hybrid style since December 2020 until the end of the academic calendar, with the record of no infected student in our university.Special Contributiondepartmental bulletin pape
