Assessing the degradability of biodegradable-packaging base material through the insertion of organic solid waste deriving from composting process
The intensified use of plastic materials in recent decades had different impacts on the environment. This issue has encouraged both research about, and the development of, alternatives to minimize the massive amount of plastic items used by society. The so-called biodegradable materials, mainly starch-based compounds, have emerged from this context. Although these materials show limited mechanical properties and low water resistance, they can be mixed to several reinforcing agents to help overcoming their shortcomings in order to be applied at larger scale without jeopardizing their biodegradability. Thus, the aims of the current study are to assess the biodegradability of a starch-based biopolymer by adding different malt bagasse (waste deriving from beer production processes) concentrations to it; as well as assessing and monitoring parameters linked to the composting process of this mix added with solid organic waste. Biodegradation was determined by visually assessing the investigated material, as well as by monitoring parameters, such as pH, temperature, humidity and organic matter and by recording them in spreadsheet, for descriptive data analysis purposes. Results have evidenced lower biological activity in the compost and, consequently, higher resistance to biodegradation than those observed for the control composting unit. It was hard identifying the material after three-week composting. After four weeks, it was not possible identifying the biopolymer. This finding suggested biopolymer biodegradation and incorporation to the substrate. The investigated material underwent changes in its mechanical properties during composting. Therefore, it is possible saying that it is fully biodegradable by all malt bagasse compositions, under composting conditions. The intensification of the use of plastic materials in recent decades has caused several environmental impacts, becoming direct incentives for research and development of alternatives that minimize the massive amount of plastics used by societies. In this context, so-called biodegradable materials emerge, with emphasis on starch-based compounds, which, although they have limited mechanical properties and low water resistance, allow the mixture with various reinforcing agents, in order to overcome the deficiencies for their application in larger scales without detracting from its focus on biodegradability. In this sense, the present study aimed to evaluate the biodegradability of a starch-based biopolymer, with the addition of different proportions of malt bagasse, this residue from the production process of beer; evaluating and monitoring parameters of the composting process of this mixture with organic solid waste. Biodegradation was determined from the visual assessment of the material, monitoring parameters such as pH, temperature, humidity and organic matter, being recorded in an electronic spreadsheet for descriptive analysis. The results obtained, when compared to the control composting unit, indicate a lower biological activity on the compost, consequently, a greater resistance to biodegradation. After three weeks of composting, it was difficult to identify the material and after four weeks, it was not possible to identify the biopolymer, indicating its biodegradation and incorporation into the substrate. It was observed that the material showed changes in its mechanical properties during composting. It is concluded that the material is totally biodegradable in all malt bagasse compositions, under composting conditions
Implementation of parcels of land micro-reservoirs as a strategy to reduce water volume in galleries and peak flows in the micro-drainage system of a new subdivision
Urbanization has caused significant environmental impacts on natural cycles, particularly the hydrological cycle. Soil impermeabilization increases surface runoff, contributing to the higher frequency and intensity of urban flooding. This phenomenon underscores the growing vulnerability of cities to extreme events, which are further exacerbated by climate change. Precipitation patterns have been shifting due to climate alterations, necessitating adaptations to IDF curves, which are critical for planning climate adaptation strategies. In many cases, existing drainage systems are insufficient to handle the impacts of urbanization and intense rainfall events. In this context, the adoption of techniques that control flow distribution over time and mitigate peak flows may be crucial for flood control, especially in urbanized areas. Green infrastructure techniques, such as Low Impact Development (LID) practices, have proven effective in mitigating urban flooding. Among these measures, infiltration techniques such as green roofs and permeable pavements, as well as storage techniques such as retention basins, detention basins and rain barrels (RB), stand out. This study examines the impact of implementing RB in the microdrainage system of a new subdivision in the interior of Paraná. The simulations were conducted for return time of 1, 5, and 10 years, indicating potential failures in the drainage system. To prevent flooding, the strategic inclusion of RB was proposed to mitigate peak flows in the drainage galleries, preventing overflow and system overload, and reducing peak flow by up to 47%
Environmental remediation of canga and iron mining waste pile using bee pasture of Baccharis dracunculifolia
Mining is an economic activity known for its significant potential to generate socio-environmental impacts. In the case of iron ore mining in the Iron Quadrangle of Minas Gerais, the areas most frequently affected are typically ferruginous fields, due to vegetation suppression for pit opening and the deposition of waste rocks. Owing to their unique characteristics, these regions exhibit a high degree of endemism, with species adapted to the specific environmental conditions, making them suitable candidates for use in ecological restoration projects. Baccharis dracunculifolia is a native plant with significant potential for inclusion in such projects due to its ability to colonize degraded areas and its interactions with pollinators, such as the honeybee Apis mellifera. Consequently, environmental restoration efforts can be integrated with apicultural production, providing a sustainable alternative for the productive use of previously degraded land. The objective of this research is to identify and compare the physical and chemical properties of soils from iron mining waste piles and canga for potential use in environmental restoration with B. dracunculifolia as a bee pasture. Analyses included particle size distribution, bulk density, moisture content, pH, and chemical composition using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Results indicated that both environments demonstrated similar properties across all tests, supporting the use of native plants such as B. dracunculifolia in ecological restoration projects. Furthermore, the establishment of bee pastures composed of this species in degraded areas can help diversify the income streams of local communities near mining operations, thereby reducing their dependency on mining activities
SUDS: Environmental remediation applied to urban drainage
The few strategies used to remediate polluted urban waters have focused on reducing gross pollutant loads with a view to improving the aesthetics of streams and receiving rivers. However, many researchers have sought to evaluate the efficiency of percolating beds, operating by gravity, in removing contaminants from urban rainwater, valuing the short time for treatment and low maintenance. The various percolating beds tested proved to be effective in removing pollutants found in collected urban runoff, particularly metals. Notably, the composition of the prototypes included vermiculite, a clay mineral that demonstrated superior results compared to those made solely from sand, justifying its adoption. In this way, new devices based in this principle, could contribute to the implementation of water requalification actions in small, highly urbanized river watersheds dominated by diffuse contamination sources, with the implementation of treatment systems at the end of the drainage networks

A formação de professores e o Desenho Universal para a Aprendizagem:: Um mapeamento sistemático da literatura.
(UDL) is related to the field of teacher training, highlighting the training of teachers of Specialized Educational Assistance (AEE), in Special Education. The systematic mapping (2017) was carried out in the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) and in the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC). It appears that the topic has been addressed for more than two decades in the field of teacher training, both in Special Education for monitoring students with disabilities, and in areas of knowledge such as Science, Mathematics, language teaching and on topics such as inclusion, social vulnerability and learning difficulties. In Brazil, studies focus on strategies that involve collaborative teaching, with an emphasis on flexibility and curricular accessibility involving the training of teachers from various areas of knowledge, both in initial training and in continuing teacher training. At the international level, research covers various dimensions of teacher training and presents themes that are close to the training of Special Education teachers, also involving different areas of knowledge and contexts ranging from Basic Education to University Education. Is argued that the UDL, although it has its origins in neuroscience focused on assistive technology, presents itself as a powerful training path, suggesting new studies on the subject in the field of teacher training, not only in Special Education as in several areas of knowledge, including initial and continuing teacher training.
