No full textEvery minute, three to six people in the world discover they have skin cancer. That\u27s two to three million people a year, according to the World Health Organization. In the case of melanomas, the numbers point to 123 thousand cases, annually. In Portugal, 12 thousand new cases of skin cancer (melanomas and non-melanomas) are estimated every year. These neoplasms are the most frequent in Caucasian individuals and their incidence has increased, representing a huge burden for society, both for the impact on citizens\u27 health and for the effort they imply in terms of direct and indirect costs for the States.No Mundo, a cada minuto, três a seis pessoas descobrem que têm cancro de pele. São dois a três milhões de pessoas por ano, segundo a Organização Mundial de Saúde. No caso dos melanomas, os números apontam para 123 mil casos, anualmente. Em Portugal, estimam-se 12 mil novos casos anuais de cancro de pele (melanomas e não melanomas). Estas neoplasias constituem-se assim as mais frequentes nos indivíduos caucasianos e a sua incidência tem aumentado, representando uma enorme carga para a sociedade, quer pelo impacto na saúde dos cidadãos, quer pelo esforço que implicam em termos de custos diretos e indiretos para os Estados

Get PDFCognitive Culture Studies aims at studying the relation between mind and culture and their mutual interdependence. The mind produces culture as much as it is shaped by it. How the mind reaches out to the world out there and how this world translates into meaning, this is the overall issue of this book.The eight chapters claim, examine and perform the possibility and necessity of intersecting the study of culture and cognition by introducing key concepts like ‘tacit knowledge’, ‘force dynamics’, ‘conceptual blending’ and ‘intramental translation’. They apply these concepts in the analyses of literary works, Walter Benjamin’s ninth thesis on history, the idea of Utopia and Christopher Columbus’ non-discovery of the New World, alluding in the last chapter to the practical consequences of tacit knowledge and intramental translation in the practice of intercultural communication.Os Estudos da Cultura Cognitiva visam estudar a relação entre mente e cultura e a sua interdependência mútua. A mente produz cultura tanto quanto é moldada por ela. Como a mente alcança o mundo lá fora e como este mundo se traduz em significado, esta é a questão geral deste livro. Os oito capítulos reivindicam, examinam e realizam a possibilidade e a necessidade de cruzar o estudo da cultura e da cognição, introduzindo conceitos-chave como conhecimento tácito, dinâmica de força, mistura conceitual e tradução intramental. Get PDFThis collection is an introduction to the history of translation in Portugal and aims, on the one hand, to draw attention to the absence of such a history, which is a significant gap in our culture, and, on the other hand, aims to reflect on the conditions under which it is possible to do so. The Estado Novo, a dictatorial regime well delimited in time, and which is close to researchers and readers nowadays, has proven to be a suitable laboratory for the definition and analysis of corpora of translations, editorial policies, and audiences, as well as for experimentation of research methodologies appropriate to achieve the purposed goal. The studies include reflections on the historiography of translation, show the construction of the project Intercultural Literature in Portugal 1930-2000: a Critical Bibliography, and address specific topics such as translated literature collections, the (dis)interest in extra-European literature, translation after the Revolution, translation of Salazar\u27s Discourses, translation, and censorship of the Spanish Civil War, and introduces authors such as Brecht and Simone de Beauvoir.Com esta coletânea de iniciação a uma história da tradução em Portugal pretende-se, por um lado, chamar a atenção para a inexistência dessa história, uma lacuna notória na nossa cultura, por outro, refletir sobre as suas condições de possibilidade. O Estado Novo, regime ditatorial bem delimitado no tempo, e próximo de investigadores e leitores ainda hoje, revelou-se um laboratório adequado à definição e análise de corpora de traduções, de políticas editoriais, de públicos, bem como à experimentação de metodologias de investigação específicas do objetivo a atingir. Women speak: gendering the mobile phone
Get PDFThis book seeks to provide a better understanding of the relationship between women and technology through an inquiry into the significance of mobile phones in the lives of Portuguese women. Recent theoretical developments suggest too little emphasis has been placed on differences between women themselves. The initial impetus for carrying out this research stemmed from contributing towards meeting this gap by investigating the scope of mobile phones as the basis for the increased technological intimacy of women whilst without reinstating the old binary oppositions between men and women. The study focuses on the mobile phone as a site where the nuances of women’s experiences with technology become visible and on adult women as a meaningful yet underrepresented group. In choosing to conduct a case study of Portugal, I wished to contribute to the development of future cross-cultural analysis on the gendering of the mobile phone.Este livro procura proporcionar uma melhor compreensão da relação entre as mulheres e a tecnologia através de uma investigação sobre o significado dos telemóveis na vida das mulheres portuguesas. Desenvolvimentos teóricos recentes sugerem que tem sido dada pouca ênfase às diferenças entre as próprias mulheres. O impulso inicial para a realização desta investigação resultou da contribuição para colmatar esta lacuna, investigando o alcance dos telemóveis como base para o aumento da intimidade tecnológica das mulheres, sem restabelecer as antigas oposições binárias entre homens e mulheres. Consenso estratégico sobre o valor da imuno-oncologia em portugal

As defined by the WHO (World Health Organization), health policy should be based on the consensus that informs society and allows for the definition of priorities for implementation. This involves difficult decisions on resource allocation and the need for profound remodeling of existing systems, which may cause resistance that costs lives. We must understand and accept the scientific evidence that constitutes Immuno-Oncology, and find the mechanisms for access to these innovative therapies for those who need them. This consensus book is an important step, which I hope will become decisive, for the agents of change in Portugal to unite around Immuno-Oncology with this noble purpose: prolonging human life by improving the quality of life.

Esta é uma altura crítica para se construírem consensos à volta da Imuno-Oncologia em Portugal. Tal como definido pela WHO (World Health Organization), a política de saúde deve ser baseada em consensos que informem a sociedade e permitam definir as prioridades de implementação. Tal envolve decisões difíceis de divisão de recursos, bem como necessidade de remodelações profundas dos sistemas vigentes, o que pode causar resistências que custam vidas.6É urgente compreendermos e aceitarmos a evidência científica que constitui a Imuno- Oncologia, e encontrarmos os mecanismos para o acesso destas terapêuticas inovadoras a quem delas necessita. Este livro de consensos é um passo importante, que espero tornar-se decisivo, para que os agentes de mudança em Portugal se unam em torno da Imuno-Oncologia com este propósito tão nobre: prolongar a vida humana, melhorando a qualidade de vida.
