Food Hygiene and Sanitation of the University Canteens in South Sumatra Province, Indonesia
Food safety is a critical public health issue, especially in institutional settings such as university canteens, where large populations are served daily. Inadequate hygiene and sanitation practices by food handlers can lead to foodborne illnesses, placing students and staff at risk. This study evaluated hygiene and sanitation conditions in the canteens of a leading public university in South Sumatra Province, Indonesia, known for its active food service facilities. This study examined food handlers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices and assessed the microbiological safety of chicken curry by testing for Escherichia coli (E. coli) contamination and total plate count. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 35 food handlers and 7 chicken curry samples across multiple canteens. Structured questionnaires and microbiological analysis were employed. Results revealed that although most food handlers demonstrated good knowledge and positive attitudes, 57.1% exhibited poor hygiene practices. Several chicken curry samples exceeded acceptable E. coli levels, indicating potential health risks. These findings underscore the urgent need for ongoing hygiene training, strict supervision, and standardized certification for food handlers to mitigate microbial hazards and ensure food safety in university settings
Does Halal Industry Impact Economic Growth? An Empirical Evidence from Muslim Countries in Asia
Purpose - This study examines the impact of the halal industry on economic growth in Muslim-majority countries, particularly in Asia, home to most of the global Muslim population.
Design/methodology/approach - Using a quantitative approach, this study applies panel data regression based on neoclassical growth theory. It analyses data from 2015 to 2022, using the Global Islamic Economy Indicator to measure the halal industry’s development. Economic growth is represented by constant GDP per capita, with foreign direct investment, inflation, and population growth as control variables.
Findings - The results show that the halal food sector has a significant positive effect on economic growth, indicating its potential as a key driver of economic development. In contrast, the halal pharmaceuticals and cosmetics sector exhibit a negative impact, suggesting challenges such as dependency on imported raw materials and high certification costs. Other sectors, including Islamic finance, halal tourism, and halal media, do not show a statistically significant effect on economic growth.
Implications - The findings underscore the importance of strengthening the halal food industry as a key contributor to economic prosperity in Muslim-majority nations. Additionally, policymakers must address structural barriers in the halal pharmaceuticals and cosmetics sector, including supply chain dependencies and regulatory inefficiencies.
Originality/value - Unlike previous research that mostly relies on qualitative approach, this study examines the halal industry\u27s economic impact using panel data regression. The findings provide valuable insights for governments, industry stakeholders, and researchers on the sector\u27s role in global economic growth
Secrets of a beautiful woman; R. Tjandrapradja’s Wawacan rusiah nu geulis : a morality tale from West Java
Raden Tjandra Pradja’s Wawacan rusiah nu geulis (The verse tale of the secrets of a beautiful woman) which was published in 1921 is a verse narrative of high literary merit. A tale of sexual morality, it is an early example of the realist fiction which was to develop during the first half of the twentieth century in the Sundanese language of West Java. The work carries an unusual and intricately woven sub-text telling of ethnic and cultural tension in Bandung, the provincial capital, through the representation of non-Sundanese figures – Hadhrami Arabs and cosmopolitan foreign Muslims. An Arab, Sheikh Abubakar bin Ma’rup al-Attas is made the villain of the piece. A community of Indians and emigres from Palembang, Sumatra, is further portrayed, according to stereotypes of the time, as wealthy merchants, strict in their observance of Islam but uncultivated in the Western-educated ways of the Sundanese elite. There is a historical irony lying behind this sub-text, since at the time of the work’s appearance progress was underway within the Hadhrami community of the Indies in the matter of religious reform, inspired by the ideas of Muhammad Abduh of Egypt. Furthermore, in 1923, in Bandung itself, members of the resident Palembang community and a Tamil Muslim from Singapore were to find the Persatuan Islam (Islamic Association) an organization which, through its pamphlets, lectures, and public debates was to create an intellectual vanguard of reformist thought in West Java

STATE SPONSORED TERRORISM AS A TOOL FOR PROXY WAR
This paper explores the role of state-sponsored terrorism as a tool in proxy wars, examining its effectiveness in achieving short-term geopolitical objectives and its long-term consequences. By analyzing historical and contemporary case studies, such as Iran’s support for Hezbollah and Pakistan’s backing of militant groups in Kashmir, the paper demonstrates how states use financial, military, and intelligence resources to empower non-state actors. The analysis applies realist, constructivist, and asymmetrical warfare theories to understand the motivations behind state sponsorship and the risks involved, including blowback and international sanctions. The paper concludes by assessing the future of state-sponsored terrorism in light of evolving global security dynamics and counter-terrorism measures
The City as the Classroom: The Case of “Start ‘em Young Advocacy” at Silliman University, Philippines
This case study highlights the value of engaging with communities as real-world environments for practical and reflective learning. It suggests that students can develop insights and acquire knowledge through interactions with diverse groups and locations, even within urban settings. The paper presents the experience of implementing the “Start ‘em Young Advocacy,” a student-led, environment-focused, and project-based initiative within the Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) under the National Service Training Program (NSTP) at Silliman University, Philippines. In collaboration with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), CWTS students worked with thirty daycare centers. Using Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory as a framework, this study explores student learning outcomes based on their written reflections, applying the “Head, Heart, and Feet” model. The results suggest that involvement in this program contributes to developing knowledge and skills, shifts in attitude and emotion, and forming future plans or initiatives. Overall, this paper presents urban environments as active learning spaces that support student development and provide opportunities to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)
Effects of Aloe Vera/Chitosan Ratios on the Tensile Properties of Aloe Vera/Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol Nanofibrous Membranes for Wound Care Dressing
Chitosan (CS) and Aloe vera (AV) are functional and antibacterial materials compatible with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which confers medical and healthcare potential. This study prepared and then characterized the influence of CS/AV ratios on the tensile properties of CS/AV/PVA nanofibrous membranes for wound care dressing materials. The CS/AV/PVA membranes were fabricated using an electrospinning technique at varying AV/CS/PVA volume ratios: 0:0:100, 0:20:80, 5:15:80, 10:10:80, 15:5:80, and 20:0:80. All membranes were subjected to tensile testing as per the ASTM 882 standard, and the nanofiber’s morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Changes in the tensile strength related to the formation of the nanofiber morphology were evaluated to select the potential membranes for applications and then compared to those of commercial adhesive bandages. The addition of 20% CS to PVA (0:20:80) decreased the tensile properties. However, the addition of AV to CS/PVA increased the tensile strength and strain but decreased the tensile modulus. Further, the 15AV/5CS/80PVA and 20AV/PVA (20:0:80) nanofibrous membranes exhibited superior tensile properties than other membranes and commercial adhesive bandages. Based on its tensile properties and double antibacterial agent content, the nanofiber membrane of 15AV/5CS/80PVA is suggested as a potential membrane for wound care dressings
Analisis Hubungan Sikap dan Tuning dengan Kepatuhan Perawat dalam Ketepatan Identifikasi Pasien di Rumah Sakit X Kabupaten Banyuwangi Tahun 2024
Patient safety is a top priority in healthcare services, including in the prevention of identification errors. Accurate patient identification is one of the Patient Safety Goals mandated by the Joint Commission International (JCI) 2024. The issue addressed in this study is the low compliance of nurses with patient identification procedures at Hospital X in Banyuwangi Regency. This study aims to analyze the relationship between nurses’ attitudes and tuning with compliance in implementing patient identification. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was used. Data on attitudes and tuning were collected through questionnaires, while compliance data were obtained from direct observations of 91 randomly selected nurses. The analysis showed a significant relationship between nurses’ attitudes and compliance with patient identification (p = 0.006), whereas tuning did not show a significant relationship (p = 1.00). Although most nurses had a positive attitude, inconsistencies were found between their attitudes and actions in the field. Therefore, it is recommended that practice-based training be provided, strict supervision by head nurses implemented, and patient identification technologies such as barcodes or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) be utilized as innovations to improve compliance with procedures
Penguatan Penegakan Etik Kepolisian Republik Indonesia Pada Komisi Kepolisian Nasional
In recent years there have been cases of abuse of authority committed by the Polri. this has a negative impact on the image of the police in the community. in handling the case also based on the law can only be carried out through the internal Polri in this case the Propam division through the Police Code of Ethics Commission (KKEP). The research method used is a qualitative method by combining data including normative, phenomena and in-depth analysis through comparison. the results of this ethical enforcement are not transparent and do not match what violators do. So that the results of this study indicate that there is a need to strengthen the authority of kompolnas as an independent institution and police partner who is directly responsible to the President to be able to supervise and enforce ethics on the police in Indonesia. The importance of the implementation of ethical supervision and enforcement in the police by strengthening the authority of kompolnas can provide transparency and increase public confidence in the Police
Peran Prediktif IL-6, IL-10, dan TNF-α Plasma terhadap Gagal Ginjal Akut pada Pasien dengan COVID-19 Derajat Sedang dan Berat
Introduction. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with higher mortality rate in COVID-19 patients due to inflammation and immune dysregulation. This study aimed to correlate serum levels of IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α with serum creatinine changes and their roles to predict incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with moderate and severe COVID-19.
Methods. This prospective cohort study was conducted among patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 in Pertamina Central Hospital Jakarta, Indonesia during November 2020 to January 2021. All serum levels of cytokines (IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α) and creatinine were collected on the first day and seventh day of hospitalization. They might be collected earlier if the patients died or discharged early. AKI was defined as deterioration in serum creatinine or urine output based on Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guideline. The correlation between cytokine and creatinine serum level changes were analyzed using Spearman test. Receiver operator characteristic curve was calculated to explore predictive roles of cytokines on AKI incidence.
Results. A total of 43 patients were included in the study, with a mean age of 59.3 years (SD 12.59), and the majority were male (74%). The incidence of AKI was 7%. Serum creatinine changes were correlated with serum levels changes IL-10 (r= -0.343; p=0.024), but not for IL-6 (r=-0.198; p=0.202) and TNF-α (r=-0.129, p=0.409). Meanwhile, serum TNF-α level on the first day was able to predict AKI incidence on the seventh day of hospitalization (AUC 85%; p=0.045; 95% CI=0.737 to 0.963).
Conclusions. TNF-α on the first day is potential to be predictor on AKI incidence on the seventh day in moderate and severe COVID-19 patients
