Women’s Empowerment and Household Decision-making: The Role of Socioeconomic Status in Indonesia
Understanding how women\u27s economic, educational, and social positions influence their roles and choices within households is crucial for promoting gender equality and sustainable development. Despite significant advancements in women\u27s rights and gender equality globally, women in Indonesia continue to face substantial barriers in achieving true empowerment. These barriers are particularly evident in domestic settings, where traditional gender roles often persist, limiting women\u27s influence in household decisions. This research aims to investigate the relationship between women\u27s socioeconomic status and their empowerment in domestic decision-making, examining how various factors such as income, education, and employment status contribute to or hinder their ability to influence family and household matters. This study performed a probit regression analysis using pooled cross-sectional data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) wave 5 (2007 and 2014) to examine the impact of women’s socioeconomic factors on the likelihood of women being empowered in domestic decision-making. Decision-making criteria included in this study concern decisions regarding spending for food consumption, daily needs and sanitation, tertiary household equipment, cash transfers to parents/relatives, and household saving. The results indicate that being employed and having higher levels of education significantly increase the probability of women having a say in household decisions. Conversely, lower socioeconomic status is strongly associated with reduced decision-making power for women. This study concludes with policy recommendations aimed at enhancing women\u27s socioeconomic status and promoting gender-equitable decision-making within households
Pembiayaan Syariah Pada ESCO Dalam Menunjang Efisiensi Energi
Climate change and the need to reduce energy consumption make energy efficiency an important solution to achieve sustainability. Energy Services Companies (ESCOs) play a central role in the implementation of energy efficiency technologies through various services such as consulting, project development, and verification of energy savings. However, one of the main challenges in this implementation is the need for significant initial investment, which is often an obstacle for project owners, especially in developing countries where high financial risk is a major obstacle. Islamic financing, based on the principles of Islamic law, offers an attractive alternative to overcome such challenges. The key principles of Islamic financing, such as the prohibition of riba (interest), gharar (uncertainty), and maysir (gambling), emphasise the value of fairness and transparency in financial management. The method used in this research is doctrinal research method by analysing and evaluating legal provisions, regulations, and applicable legal principles related to the dynamics of Islamic financing in Energy Service Company (ESCO) in supporting energy efficiency. The results show that in the context of ESCOs, Islamic financing can be applied through two main business patterns, namely ‘guaranteed energy savings’ and ‘shared energy savings.’ Under the ‘guaranteed energy savings’ scheme, the ESCO guarantees certain energy savings to the project owner. If the savings do not reach the promised target, the ESCO will bear the loss, in line with Shariah principles that promote a mutually beneficial relationship. The ‘shared energy savings’ pattern allows the ESCO and the project owner to share the risks as well as the returns from the achieved energy savings. The advantage of Islamic financing in this context lies in its ability to overcome capital barriers, expand access to more diverse financing, and increase the attractiveness of ESCOs, especially in developing countries
Legal Protections for Gig Workers: A Comparative Socio-legal Study of Indonesia and India
The platform economy has transformed the lines of labour in the last few years across both developed and developing countries. In the case of other countries, such as Indonesia and India, where informal employment has been a long-standing characteristic of the labour force, the rise of digital platforms, including Gojek, Grab, Swiggy, and Zomato, has added another layer of complexity to already existing labour issues. These services provide flexibility and earning potential, albeit in exchange for social safety nets and work rights. This paper undertakes a doctrinal and comparative socio-legal study to observe the way the legal jurisdictions of Indonesia and India are adapting to the emergence of platform-based gig work. Grounded on legal pluralism and access to justice approaches, the present research analyses the sufficiency of the existing labour laws regarding the changing characteristics of digital labour. Such statutory instruments, such as the Indonesia Omnibus Law on Job Creation or the India Code on Social Security, 2020, are used in the analysis to compare the way platform labour and its entitlements are conceptualised in different jurisdictions. Instead of conducting empirical data collection in the field, the study centres on legal sources, policy documents, and judicial opinions with the aim of finding out the normative premises behind whether the regulation of platforms is done. The research concludes that both states are prolific legislators with the tendency to implement economic liberalisation rather than labour rights, although rarely taking into consideration the vulnerability of the gig workers in the legal rhetoric. Through a socio-legal perspective, this paper indicates the contradictions between technological advancement, the dignity of workers, and legal responsibility. It demands the reconsideration of binary employment regimes and proposes implementing hybrid regulatory regimes that will consider the special status of platform workers. Finally, the article adds to the discourse of labour justice in the digital world a global south perspective that asks all policymakers to design legislation that is not total in its market-driven orientation but in social justice and equality of access to the law
EKSPLORASI SENI DALAM MENGASAH PEMIKIRAN KRITIS DI POJOK BACA PARUDONGKA
The transmigration program in Parudongka Village, which began in 2016, has brought forth a young generation facing limited infrastructure, including restricted access to learning resources. This condition underlies the establishment of Pojok Baca Parudongka as an art-based literacy space. The purpose of this study is to encourage critical thinking, foster the courage to ask questions, and enhance reading interest through interactive literacy activities. The research employs Freire’s (1968) cultural action theory framework, which emphasizes dialogue, praxis, and critical consciousness as means to achieve educational liberation. In addition, it adopts Conde’s (2021) art-based approach focusing on narrative inquiry, visual storytelling, and art journaling. The activities target elementary and junior high school participants in the Parudongka transmigration area, conducted from August to November 2025. The results indicate that Pojok Baca effectively enriches literacy experiences, stimulates curiosity, and facilitates critical dialogue between participants and researchers. Ultimately, Pojok Baca Parudongka serves as an art-based community literacy space that functions as a strategic medium to strengthen the reading culture and develop the critical thinking capacity of young people in the transmigration area
MEDIA EDUKASI DIGITAL UNTUK PROMOSI CANDI PENATARAN SEBAGAI UPAYA PENGEMBANGAN PARIWISATA BUDAYA
The development of cultural tourism greatly depends on the appreciation and involvement of the community in preserving and maintaining their cultural assets. However, over time, public awareness and concern for cultural heritage have gradually declined. One site that holds high historical and cultural value is Candi Penataran, a relic from the Majapahit era that has been recognized as an important cultural and historical tourism destination in Indonesia. Candi Penataran possesses significant tourism potential. In addition to its historical value as a cultural heritage, its strategic location along the same route as the tomb of Indonesia’s Proclaimer, Ir. Soekarno, provides a major opportunity to attract visitors. The site is also easily accessible, as it is reachable by public transportation and located near a main road. Situated at the foot of Mount Kelud, the area enjoys a cool climate and offers beautiful rural scenery, surrounded by agricultural lands that dominate the landscape. Recognizing this potential, this community service program aims to strengthen the tourism appeal of Candi Penataran through information digitalization and community empowerment. The digitalization of information will make it easier for visitors to access the history and cultural significance of Candi Penataran. Meanwhile, training local residents to create promotional content is expected to enhance their capacity to independently and sustainably promote their tourism site
From Methods to Meaning: Rethinking Psychological Research in Urban Contexts
From Methods to Meaning: Rethinking Psychological Research in Urban Context
Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Psychological Research Practices and Opportunities: Do We All Have the (Same) Chance?
The dominance of WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) authors might indicate significant differences in research practices between them and non-WEIRD researchers or highlight issues such as inequality and publishing bias. In this survey, using a convenience sample of researchers worldwide (N = 72), we examined current research practices and researchers\u27 views on the feasibility of advancements in employed methodologies among and between researchers in both WEIRD and Non-WEIRD countries. Our results showed that research practices are fairly uniform across cultures, by researchers commonly relying on (student) convenience samples, using statistical packages such as SPSS and R, utilizing low-cost equipment, publishing once to five times a year, and contributing as reviewers and journal editors. Only significant differences were observed between WEIRD and Non-WEIRD researchers related to institutional support, such as opportunities for statistical consultancy and funding prospects. Respondents were supportive regarding progress in research practices, but cautioned that further developments might exacerbate existing inequalities, particularly at smaller and less funded institutions. Our main conclusion is that the visibility and outreach gap between WEIRD and non WEIRD researchers is primarily caused by systemic issues, rather than due to differences in research practices
Religious Parties and the Construction of Political Identity: A Comparative Study of Indonesia and Türkiye
This study examines the influence of religious-based political parties on political identity by comparing Indonesia and Türkiye. The background of this research lies in the role of religious parties in shaping political identity in Muslim-majority countries, where these parties must balance their adherence to religious doctrine with democratic values. The research problem examines how religious-based parties, such as PKS in Indonesia and AKP in Türkiye, construct their political identities within differing political systems. Using a quantitative approach with a comparative design and linear regression analysis, the study tests the impact of variables such as religious representation, associational networks, political education, and religious political identity. The results reveal that in Indonesia, these variables significantly shape political identity, whereas in Türkiye, no significant influence is observed due to AKP’s reliance on populist-nationalist narratives. The conclusion highlights that institutional and historical contexts heavily mediate the impact of religious parties on political identity
