Redefining Khilafah: Integrating Islamic Responsibility and Democratic Ethics

    No full text
This study examines the long-debated relationship between khilafah (caliphate) and democracy, which are often viewed as two opposing political poles. The issue arises because both concepts are frequently interpreted solely as systems or forms of government, leading to a reductive understanding. While democracy has an established framework as a political system, the notion of the caliphate has been shaped by ideological biases. As a result, both supporters and critics of the caliphate have misconstrued its Qur’anic meaning, perpetuating the misconception that the caliphate represents a specific political structure. This research seeks to clarify the original meaning of khilafah beyond political interests and to explore the possibility of reconciling it with democratic principles. Using the thematic interpretation method to uncover the Qur’anic conception of the caliphate and Kuntowijoyo’s Prophetic Social Science as an analytical framework, this study finds that khilafah is not a state system but a divine moral character that reflects human responsibility to emulate God’s attributes. Furthermore, the caliphate should be understood as an intellectual and ethical movement grounded in knowledge, rather than as a doctrinal or institutional form of governance

Educational Games for Enhancing Arabic Language Proficiency: A Literature Review at the Madrasah Aliyah Level

    No full text
Abstract The teaching of Arabic in Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic senior high school) continues to encounter various challenges, including limited learning media, monotonous teaching methods, and low student motivation. While numerous methods have been introduced, studies specifically addressing the integration of educational games in Arabic language learning at Madrasah Aliyah are still scarce. A game-based approach, however, has been recognized as effective in improving student engagement, motivation, and mastery of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This study adopts a library research method with descriptive analysis to examine the effectiveness of educational games, key success factors, and their theoretical and practical implications. The findings reveal that educational games contribute to vocabulary development, enhance speaking and listening skills, and foster students’ confidence and motivation. Successful implementation depends on well-designed games, alignment with curriculum objectives, the teacher’s role as facilitator, and the integration of technological tools such as Quizizz and Wordwall. Theoretically, this study affirms the shift toward an interactive, student-centered learning model. Practically, the findings support the use of innovative strategies that address the specific needs of Madrasah Aliyah students and serve as a reference for teachers, curriculum developers, and researchers in optimizing Arabic language learning through contextual and enjoyable methods

    No full text
The taxonomy-based mechanistic approach in learning Islamic Religious Education and Character Education (PAI BP) risks reducing religiosity to mere ritual formalities, thereby hindering the growth of authentic, reflective, and transformative spiritual experiences. Therefore, it is necessary  to develop a taxonomy that establishes the dimension of attitudes in PAI BP learning with a formulation that is not complex but rather simple and applicable. This research used a systematic literature review, specifically the PAI BP textbook, the PAI BP Teacher and Student Books, published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, which were analyzed objectively and systematically, and conclusions were drawn. This study offers the Three Spiritual Taxonomies in PAI BP learning. This taxonomy divides spirituality into three dimensions: understanding with the operational verb "explain," appreciating with the operational verb "feel," and practicing with the operational verb "do.
