The Direction of Memory in 887:Collective Memory and the Construction of Québécois Identity

application/pdfThe structure of 887, a theatrical performance directed by Robert Lepage, makes the audience experience personal and collective memory through a monologue. Lepage's direction technique positions fragments of memories together into the memory space so that a local identity as Québécois is constructed in the audience's memory. This paper purposes to discuss how the narrative of 887 presents collective memory and how such communal recollections are associated with the construction of the Québécois identity for Lepage, who is also the narrator of the dramatic monologue. According to Halbwachs, the key to constructing collective memory is to place every episode of a contemporary flow of time within a single memory. This paper reflects on Lepage's theatrical approach vis-à-vis memory and francophones in the 1960s and 1970s, and thus elucidates the multiple times the audiences of 887 are made to recollect this phenomena.departmental bulletin pape

Analysis of Required Quantization Precision for CIE XYZ Signals in Discrete Region

application/pdfThe Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) in the U.S. has standardized a system for digital cinema in 2005, which digitally processes movies from production to distribution/screening. In the DCI standard, the required number of quantization bits is determined by applying the Barten’s model as a visual model for luminance signals only. However, since most of the actual movies are in color, it lacks sufficient theoretical basis. In this study, we formulate the problem of applying various transformations corresponding to luminance, density, and gamma-corrected values in the discretized domain to the CIE XYZ color space. By using the asymptotic expansion method in the continuous-valued domain to these respective values, we compare the required quantization accuracy with that obtained by the corresponding analysis in discretized domain. The results show that the required number of quantization bits obtained by the analysis in the discretized domain is consistent with the results of computer simulations and the approximations obtained in the continuous-valued domain for the cases of luminance (14 bits), density (12 bits), and gamma-corrected value quantization (11 bits), respectively. The required accuracy of conventional TV signals, which have a smaller signal range than that of digital cinema, is also investigated, and its validity is confirmed by the simulation. The proposed analysis method makes it possible to obtain the required number of quantization bits without time-consuming computer simulations.departmental bulletin pape

A Study On Seismic Damage Mitigation For A Glass Screen System Of Low-Rise Steel Frame Building Based On Earthquake Response Observations And Simulation Analysis

application/pdfDynamic behavior of glass screen of low-rise steel frame building has been examined by earthquake response observations and simulation analysis. Strong-motion earthquake measurement was conducted at damaged a low-rise steel-frame building with glass screens to examine its vibration characteristics that could generate force on the glass screens. From the analysis and an earthquake observation done, it was confirmed that the glass screen at the corner of the building tends to be easily destroyed due to the influence of coupling with the torsional vibrations in addition to the large vibrations in out-of-plane direction.departmental bulletin pape

Design of an ultrasonic vibration system for generating rotating sound field- Quantitative evaluation of vibration distribution difference with changing the driving transducers -

application/pdfRotating sound field excited by flexural vibration disk/ring is used for some high-power ultrasonic applications. In general, two or more transducers are used for this purpose with changing the number or position of transducers. When the transducers are attached to the disk/ring, the vibration distribution in the disk/ring does not exactly match the natural mode of vibration. This paper presents a quantitative evaluation of this difference in flexural vibration distribution of the disk driven by Langevin transducers.departmental bulletin pape

A SEISMICRESPONSE OF FRAME & COLUMN-BASE FOR LOW-RISE STEEL STRUCTURE WITH EXPOSED COLUMN-BASE part 4 _ Effectivity & factor for column axial force

application/pdfExposed column-base had double flag type restoring force characteristics, and it strength, rotational rigidity & hysteresis were affected by the column axial force. That characteristics understand obtain from partial frame experiment. Moreover, the influence of its characteristics on steel structure seismic response examined by time history analysis of steel structure with rotational spring, that rotational spring had double flag type restoring force characteristics. However, partial frame experiment was no agreement boundary condition of column-base in structure on ground motion, and rotational spring was no agreement influence of axial force. Therefore, seismic response & working stress of exposed column-base with steel structure included many uncertainty about building structural design. The author discussed exposed column-base behavior and structure response on ground motion, that uses seismic response analysis results obtain from low-rise steel structure with model that can reproduce the column-base behavior. In this paper, exposed column-base around plastic deformation are unaffected by up-down acceleration of earthquake. On the other hand, gravity acceleration are very important consideration in its understand.departmental bulletin pape

Education system for IoT device using Sigfox, Matlab, and Thingspeak

application/pdfWe installed a Sigfox antenna at Hiroshima Institute of Technology and used the Sigfox network to acquire data from a water meter equipped with an IoT device via the Internet. In addition, the results of the water meter revealed that it is possible to create an IoT-related system that combines an environment sensor, ozone sensor, illuminance sensor, and GPS sensor in one procedure. Some of these studies were incorporated into the studies of students in the first half of the doctoral program at the graduate school, and the research results were obtained, so it is considered that a rudimentary educational system could be constructed.departmental bulletin pape

Visual Quality Balancing between Enhanced High-resolution and OrdinaryJPEG-decoded Images in Steganographic Image Compression System

application/pdfThe steganographic image compression system provides a coding method that is compatible with standard JPEG, but allows only users who know that the information of higher frequency components is embedded to obtain enhanced high-resolution images at the same time. Until now, the main focus has been on improving the quality of high-resolution images by embedding as many codes as possible in lower frequency DCT coefficients. However, this conventional method leads to greater degradation in JPEG-decoded low-resolution images, and it is not appropriate to prioritize high-resolution images over low-resolution images because of the inherent duality of providable resolution images by the system. Therefore, in this study, we employ Watson’s model to evaluate the distortion caused by embedding enhancement codes to lower frequency, and extend the perceptual model to higher frequency by extrapolating DCT frequency sensitivity values to calculate visual distortion of higher frequency DCT coefficients when they are discarded due to a constraint of payload. In addition, we propose a visual quality balancing (VQB) algorithm for low- and high-resolution images by successively comparing their perceptual distances during enhancement code embedding. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm through simulation experiments on standard test images with 4K resolution.departmental bulletin pape

Thin film formation and surface treatment using plasma ion implantation method

application/pdfIn the PBII method, the ion density in the sheath could be obtained based on the modulator equivalent circuit. In the PBII method, the self-ignitting plasma used in the sterilization process was formed, and the plasma density and sheath length could be calculated from the obtained discharge current-high voltage voltage waveform. Using this method, some of the important parameters such as plasma density and sheath length could be obtained when designing the equipment in the future.departmental bulletin pape
