Models of non-slip-type restoring force characteristics for steel exposed column base
application/pdfGenerally, an exposed column base consists of anchor bolts and an elastic thick base plate. Restoring force characteristics of the column base are observed to be slip-type due to a gap between a nut of the anchor bolt and the base plate, caused by the plastic elongation of the anchor bolt. A new technique for improving the slip-type behavior has been proposed by the authors. This exposed column base with wedge devices shows non-slip-type restoring force characteristics instead of slip-type ones. In this paper, models of the new restoring force characteristics are proposed and compared with experimental results. The following conclusions are drawn. 1) The models of restoring force characteristics for new exposed column bases under monotonic loading can be calculated from the bending resistance of all anchor bolts. 2) The models of cyclic characteristics for the exposed column bases can be shown as non-slip-type ones, which are build-up-from-origin-type and are formulated by use of the models under monotonic loading. 3) Because the models of the characteristics for the column bases with wedge devices can be simply predicted, they can be easily applied to seismic response analysis.departmental bulletin pape
Models of slip-type restoring force characteristics for steel exposed column base
application/pdfGenerally, an exposed column base consists of anchor bolts and an elastic thick base plate. Restoring force characteristics of the column base are observed to be slip-type due to a gap between a nut of the anchor bolt and the base plate, caused by the plastic elongation of the anchor bolt. The cyclic characteristics for the column base with many lanes of anchor bolts are so complicated that only the models for the column bases with one or two lanes of anchor bolts have already been proposed. In this paper, the unified formulation for the models of cyclic characteristics for the column bases are proposed and are compared with experimental results. The following conclusions are drawn. 1) The restoring force characteristics of conventional column bases can be shown as slip-type models. 2) The models for the column bases with the anchor bolts on the axis of centroid of column are complicated and are shown discretely slip-type. 3) The slip-type models of cyclic characteristics for the column bases are in good agreement with the experimental results.departmental bulletin pape
Toward a Linking Education The Second Report: Execution of Exercise in Basic Physic
application/pdfThis is the second report on the program of our linking education in physics. We have executed the subject“,Exercise in Basic Physics",since 2000 in order to fill the gap between physics of high school level and physics to be learned in college. This paper refers to some attempts developed in the first semester for the freshmen of our Institute. We begin to use an original workbook as the textbook. Furthermore as another new attempt,w e gave tests twice, where the questions were common to all the classes in the Faculty of Engineering. We analyze the results of these tests. In addition, the results of questionnaires about the classes are discussed and future problems are addresseddepartmental bulletin pape
Mechanical Characteristics on Post Damper made of ordinary steel having new out-of-plane stiffener
application/pdfIn recent years, RC structure buildings, with the post damper system are increasing in number because it takes little space. Authors had been developed the shear resistance member having new out-of-plane stiffener. In this paper, in order to confirm basic characteristics, loading tests were carried out on the post damper with the shear resistance member made of ordinary steel as a hysteretic damper. According to the tests, the following results were obtained. 1) Having new out-of-plane stiffener, the damper made of ordinary steel panel, which is about 70 in width-to-thickness ratio, shows excellent deformation capacity and efficient energy absorption capacity. 2) The shear resistance member shows a stable hysterisis characteristics under compressive axial force of 0.2 in its fully plastic axial force. 3) It is possible to develop the post damper which easily applyed precast reinforced concrete constructions.departmental bulletin pape
Environment and Culture -Observation on Rise and Fall of GOGYOSAI in Bingo-
application/pdfGOGYOSAI performed in Bingo Region is a religious dance born in Genroku period. It is a unique KAGURA (religious dance) that consists of not only dancing and singing but also praying ROKUSAIMON. The prayer is written on the basis of Chinese philosophy. It shows the people the sympathetic love between man and woman, parents and children to overcome death. The GOGYOSAI was so successful since its birth, but after 1955 it started to decline. Researchers gave various reasons for the decline of the GOGYOSAI. In this paper, the author compares the relationship between the reduction in matsutake mushroom production and the decline of GOGYOSAI. He conceived an idea that the destruction of SATOYAMA,which is the product of human activity relating to the nature, caused the decline of GOGYOSAI. He concludes that the environmental destruction results not only that of natural environment but also the destruction of cultural environment as well.departmental bulletin pape
The Effect of Attached Manipulator Ring on a Fully Developed Turbulent pipe flow
application/pdfThe response of a fully developed turbulent pipe flow to a pulsewise disturbance, which is attached a single ring-type manipulator with a rectangular cross section, was investigated by the mean and turbulent flow field. The test section was 99.8mm diameter,smooth-walled,circular pipe, with air flowing at a Reynolds number of 6.2x10^4. The ring-type manipulator had a height 0.14times the pipe radius, and it was placed in the inner pipe wall. The results indicated that the return to a self-preserving state could be achieved at approximately 97times the pipe diameter. The response of the turbulent flow field is delayed in comparison with that of the mean flow field. Near the reattachment point, magnitude of the turbulence and Reynolds shear stress have peak values at the ring height following the development of the separated shear layer. Then, for this separated shear layer, velocity profiles are re-described making use of the velocity and length scales, which is determined from the center position of the separated shear layer.departmental bulletin pape

A System for Making Visually Teaching Materials to Help Students Understand Mechanics Concepts and to Increase Their Will
application/pdfStructural mechanics is one of the subjects to be hard to understand for students in engineering field. It is the reason why they have scarce images against mechanical phenomena. This paper presents a system for making visually teaching materials to make for students possible to image mechanical phenomena by using computer movie clips, and the effects applied the visual materials to lectures related structural mechanics. The newly developed system is shown by using samples of visual representation such as a failure test of a cantilever beam,a shaking table test of tile-roof on a wooden house,a river flow disaster due to heavy rainfall and a lifting head of energy in hydraulics. The system leads to increase students' will for studydepartmental bulletin pape
Improvement of seismic performance on non-compression brace
application/pdfAuthors had proposed the brace that strength, remained plastic deformation capacity and energy absorption capacity can be easily evaluated under seismic loading. Proposed brace consists of slender rod and tensile connected end with tapered washer and wedge. There is no buckling in the brace. The wedge slides between washer and stand so as to prevent the looseness of brace due to axial plastic deformation under repeated lateral loading. To improve the plastic deformation capacity of the brace, new tensile connected end with tapered washer and wedge are proposed. To show the mechanism and performance of the brace, the repeated lateral loading tests are performed on one story one bay frame with tensile connected brace with wedge device. Results and conclusion obtained from loading tests are summarized as follows. 1) The perfectly elasto-plastic hysteresis are observed until slide displacement of wedge reaches its maximum value. 2) Story shear, strength and energy absorption capacity are easily evaluated. 3) The remained plastic deformation capacity after earthquake can be evaluated by means of checking total slide displacement of the wedge. 4) Using new tensile connected end with tapered washer and wedge, it is possible to enhance the plastic deformation capacity.departmental bulletin pape
