An Experiment on Design Teaching in the Department of Civil Engineering

    Get PDF
application/pdfIt is difficult to conduct the design training in the department of civil Engineering, because the students have had little experience of design. We tried coming to grips with design outside the college curriculum in order that: ① they may be interested in design, ② they may find a good design, ③ they may master the design methodology, ④ they may picture themselves using their designs practically, and ⑤ they may say how useful their designs are That caused not only them to have a strong sense of design, but also us to give careful and instructive advice to some students who want extremely to study design. They also took part as a witness in the workshop in which we teachers made designs. We are sure that our trial is very effective in instructing design.departmental bulletin pape

Buckling Test on Full-Scale Angle Steel Brace with Bonding CFRP Plates

    Get PDF
application/pdfTo enhance the usage life of existing building, a tensile force strengthening method with bonding carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) plate has been developed by the authors. To enhance the strength and deformation of steel structure member, a rehabilitation technique of compressive force strengthening as well as tensile force strengthening is nequired. This paper reports the result of the loading tests on a full scaled angle steel brace before and after rehabilitation using bonding CFRP plates. These results show enhanced compressive force carrying capacity and deformation capacity of brace by bonding CFRP plates and a proposed rehabilitation is practical and effective for a bracing steel structure.departmental bulletin pape

A Study on Spatial Organization and Utilization of“Shophouses”in Phnom Penh,Cambodia

    Get PDF
application/pdfRecently, the population of Phnom Penh has been increasing. To make urban growth successful, making the development strategy will be important. On the other side, there are many historic buildings called“shophouses”,which will need to be preserved in the future. However, there are few studies to deal with them. Thus, this paper aims to grasp the spatial structure and actual dwelling state of“shophouses”in the city center of Phnom Penh. The results are as follows:1. The plan of“shophouses”can be classified into 5 patterns by the position of the stairs and scale. Furthermore,we found that large-scale shophouse can be composed by combination of its composition of the small-scale shophouses. 2. The forms of extension and rebuilding can be classified into 20 patterns according to the follwing places:inside of the dwelling (7 types), common space of the shouphouse (7 types), outdoor space (3 types) and between two shophouses (3 types).departmental bulletin pape

A study on Vibration Characteristics of Steel Portal Framed Structures of Slip-Type Exposed Column-Bases

    Get PDF
application/pdfSteel buildings generally use anchor-bolt-yield-type exposed column-base, which shows slip-type restoring force characteristics. Anchor bolts show slip phenomena and fixed rigidity of the columnbase deteriorates. The deterioration of the fixed rigidity causes the change of the vibration characteris tics of a structure. Shaking table tests on the steel frame with the anchor-bolt-yield-type exposed column-base were conducted to clarify the vibration behavior of the frame. The following conclusions were drawn from the experimental results. 1) Anchor bolts show slip phenomena. 2) The deterioration of the fixed rigidity of the column-base affects the natural frequency of the structuredepartmental bulletin pape

An Expedient Evaluation Method for Warp Deformation Behavior of Viscoelastic Laminated Beam Consisting of Epoxy Resin and Steel

    Get PDF
application/pdfA simplified evaluation equation that simply predicts the warp deformation behavior arising when the thermal load was given to a viscoelastic laminated beam consisting of epoxy resin and steel was proposed. The validity of the equation was verified by comparing its solution with the exact solution based on linear viscoelastic theory and the experimental values. The proposed simplified evaluation equation is composed of the glass transition temperature, the rubber transition temperature, the elastic modulus and the linear thermal expansion coefficient of the component material. In this study,it was clarified that the warp deformation behavior of the viscoelastic laminated beam could be simply predicted by using the proposed simplified evaluation equation which where the elastic modulus is divided into three regions such as glassy state, leathery state and rubbery state.departmental bulletin pape

Simple Analysis Model for Exposed Column-Base Considering Effect of Initial Tensioning of Anchor Bolt and Column Axial Force

    Get PDF
application/pdfThis paper presents a two-dimensional structural model of an exposed column-base, which takes account of initial tensioning of anchor bolts and column axial force. The applicability of this model is confirmed by loading tests on a canti-lever with exposed column-base subjected to horizontal forces. The following observations were made: 1) The model takes account of variation of rotational rigidity due to initial anchor bolts tensioning and axial force of column-base. 2) The model adjusts the maximum bending moment capacity and rotational rigidity by changing the line of action of the compressive force line and rigidity modification coefficient. 3) The result of the present model agrees closely with loading-tests results.departmental bulletin pape

Flexural Bond Test of Composite Plate with Steel and CFRP Plates

    Get PDF
application/pdfA method of strengthening the existing steel buildings with bonded carbon-fiber reinforced-plastic (CFRP) plates has been developed to prolong their useful life. To apply this method, we need to determine the basic mechanical properties CFRP, such as adhesive strength and deformation capacity, and to develop the effective bonding combination of CFRP plates. This paper reports the results of the flexural bond test of composite plate with steel and CFRP plates. These results show adhesive strength and deformation capacity of composite plate. We also propose an effective combination of bonding CFRP plates for strengthening the existing buildings.departmental bulletin pape

Comparison of Earthquake Response of Two-Story Steel Pure Frames Due to the Difference of Earthquake Wave and the Maximum Acceleration Level by Shaking Table Tests

    Get PDF
application/pdfIn order to investigate the safety on response level of steel structures under dynamic excitation as an earthquake, simple one-story and two-story steel pure-frame structure models were tested using a shaking table controlled by acceleration input of seismic wave. The two-story frame structures with rigid roof and rigid floor consists of two types of columns: the one is “weak” first-story model and the other is “strong” first-story model. The test results were traced by a dynamic response analysis. The elasto-plastic tri-linear restoring force-deformation curves were employed to compare the maximum load and the maximum story-displacement of the test behavior for each model. It is found that the predominant period in the velocity spectrum property of the input seismic wave is influenced with the acceleration level where the deformation response of the model got into plastic range.departmental bulletin pape

Experimental Study on Rehabilitation Technique by Means of Non-compression Brace

    Get PDF
application/pdfIn this paper, horizontal loading tests on rigid frames with non-compression braces attached by high-strength bolts were carried out in order to examine the applicability of the braces to rehabilitation of existing structures. The initial rigidity and the strength of the frames with the braces increased and the cyclic characteristics of the frames showed spindle-shaped. The following conclusions were drawn from the experimental results. 1) No buckling phenomenon happens. 2) No slip phenomenon due to plastic deformation of the brace happens. 3) The restoring force characteristics show spindle-shaped curves.departmental bulletin pape

Experimental Study on Exposed Column-Base under Constant Column Axial-Force

    Get PDF
application/pdfAn anchor-bolt-yield-type column base shows slip-type restoring force characteristics. The column base subjected to constant axial and cyclic horizontal forces shows more complicated characteristics. An experimental study on the column bases under constant axial-force and cyclic bending was carried out. The following conclusions were obtained from the loading tests: 1) Three types of resistant mechanisms of the column base under constant axial-force were classified to evaluate the strength and the elastic rotational stiffness. 2) In the case of axial-tension N=0.3Ny,the restoring force characteristics of the column base were obtained combined all types of the resistant mechanisms. 3) In the case of axial-tension N=0.6Ny, the restoring force characteristics became perfectly elasto-plastic curves without slip behavior.departmental bulletin pape
