A Study on T-Shaped Beam-to-Column Connection with Self-Centering Performance
application/pdfIn this paper, an experimental study on self-centering performance of T-shaped beam-to-column
connections with/without ribs on the end plate subjected to cyclic loadings was carried out. The
following conclusions were drawn from the experimental results.
1) The T-shaped beam-to-column connections with/without ribs show excellent self-centering
performance.
2) The connection with ribs shows no-slip behavior because of improvement of the device moving

Effective tunneling coefficient of a coupled double-well system modulated by anharmonic periodic potentials
application/pdfWe numerically study coherent tunneling oscillations of the particles between two levels in a double-well
potential in the presence of anharmonic periodic potentials. Extremely short driving pulses modify the tunneling
coefficient to ef f= cos A, where is the bare tunneling coefficient without the driving field and A is the
pulse area of the driving wave form. The modulation amplitude of the ef f gradually decreases as the driving
wave form becomes broad and is given by ef f= J0 A for the sinusoidal modulation, where J0 x denotes the
ordinary Bessel function of order zero. Theoretical derivation of the effective tunneling coefficient ef f
= cos A is also shown for a periodic kick with alternating sign by means of the transfer matrix formula.journal articl
Time-reversal operation of tunneling dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices
application/pdfWe propose schemes that can perform perfect time-reversal operation of the tunneling dynamics of Bose-
Einstein condensates in optical lattices. One of the time-reversal schemes is to reverse the sign of the tunneling
coefficient by a time-periodic potential, maintaining its magnitude at a constant value. The other scheme
utilizes a staggered 0- phase imprinting on the optical lattices. If the reversal of the tunneling coefficient or
the phase imprinting is performed at = p, the initial distribution of the condensates is regained at =2 p.
Although the nonlinear interatomic interaction deteriorates the fidelity of the time-reversal operation, if the sign
of the nonlinearity is reversed simultaneously with the phase imprinting at = p, the time-reversal operation at
=2 p becomes nearly perfect.journal articl
Traditional healthful fermented products of Japan
application/pdfA variety of fermentation products, such as foods containing probiotic bacteria, black
rice vinegar (kurosu), soy sauce (shoyu), soybean-barley paste (miso), natto and tempeh,
are sold in food stores in Japan. These fermented food products are produced by
traditional methods that exploit mixed cultures of various non-toxic microorganisms.
These microorganisms include lactic acid bacteria, acetic acid bacteria, sake yeast, koji
molds and natto bacteria. Many traditional fermented foods have been studied and their
effects on metabolism and/or immune system have been demonstrated in animal and/or
human cells. This review summarizes the scientific basis for the effects of these
traditional food products, which are currently produced commercially in Japan.journal articl
Inhomogeneity of Plastic Optical Fiber and Effects of Photodiode Position on Measured Characteristics
application/pdfNear field patterns(NFPs) of a plastic optical fiber (POF) are studied in this paper. NFPs are
found to be inhomogeneous across the cross section of the POF and vary irregularly over short POF
distances. They also vary when light incident angles are varied. The irregularity and inhomogeneity
are found to come not from the irregularity of the POF end surfaces but from the POF bulk property.
They are also found to affect the far field pattern(FFP),which in turn affects the impulse response
waveform and frequency transfer characteristics of the POF.
The use of a photodiode in combination with a POF of a large diameter and large numerical aperture
is also studied in this paper. Frequency transfer function of a POF can be measured precisely only
when all of the exiting lights from the POF are received at a photodiode(PD). Such a condition is
not met for the POF under consideration. POFs of 35m and 10m in length and with light incident
at zero degree both show the best frequency characteristics when the distance between the POF end
surface and the APD is the largest as we have expected. However,POF of 10m in length and light
incident at 25 degrees shows the best frequency characteristics when the distance is small. Both
characteristics are discussed in terms of varying angle distributions of the light that the APD can

Earthquake-Resistance Evaluation of Conventional Wooden-Framed Houses Using Superstructure Grade Points by the Earthquake Diagnosis
application/pdfThis research aims to investigate the relationship between the amount of bearing-wall in an earthquake diagnosis evaluation, the fundamental natural frequency based on the micro-tremor measurement and the actual earthquake damage to conventional wooden-framed houses in Japan. The micro-tremor measurements are widely taken to survey the earthquake damage to wooden houses and the site ground condition. However, a close relationship between the earthquake damage, the amount of bearing-wall of wooden house, and the micro-tremor property is not established. The wall-fulfillment ratio shows an amount of existing bearing-wall with an effective length against the wall required by the Building Code. The diagnosis grade-point for superstructure of wooden house corresponds to the wall-fulfillment ratio, that is, the safety factor of the load-carrying capacity against the external force such as an earthquake or a wind. It is said that, when the grade-point in the evaluation falls to 1.0-0.7, earthquake damage may occur and, when the grade-point is less than 0.7, the collapsing possibility is very high under a severe earthquake.departmental bulletin pape
Reconnaissance Report on the Housing Damage Caused by the 2007 Noto Peninsula Earthquake
application/pdfThe 2007 Noto Peninsula earthquake did great damage to wooden-framed structures. The JMA seismic intensity of 6+ was recorded in Wajima city, Nanao city, and Anamizu-machi. One person was killed, more than 359 were injured. The number of totally-collapsed houses was nearly 600, and partially-collapsed houses were over 1,500. Five days after the occurrence of the earthquake, the authors visited the most stricken areas: Monzen-machi-Toge, Wajima city, Anamizu-machi, and Nanao-city, and inspected the damage state of buildings. Human Genome Project Technology and Politics
application/pdfOn June26,2000,both the international team composed of governmental institutions in USA,EU,
and Japan and a private company,Celera Genomics,released individual draft versions of the sequence
of the human genome, and the former has declared the completion of the sequencing in 2003. This
paper is focused on the DNA sequencing technology,a‘must’in the Human Genome Project (HGP).
First, a brief history of the invention of the principle of DNA sequencing is described. Next we
describe the details of the key technologies that have made the success of the HGP possible. The
reason Japan has been completely defeated as to its contribution in the HGP is summarized although
Japan had at least one step ahead of USA in the concept of both automated DNA sequencing
technologies and ‘human genome project.’Finally we suggest the need of the enhancement of the
