Experimental Study on Knee-Brace Rehabilitation of Steel Beam-to-Column Connection with Composite Beams

    Get PDF
application/pdfMany steel beam-to-column connections were damaged to both the 1994 Northridge and the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquakes, especially bottom beam flanges near by the connection with a composite beam. After those earthquakes, many studies have been carried out on brittle fractures of the beam-column connections. Most of those studies have employed moment-resisting frames to clarify fracture mechanism of connections. This experimental study was conducted on connections with a composite beam to propose a new method for rehabilitation of fractured bottomflange near by the connection. Non-compression knee-brace was used to strengthen the bottom-flange.departmental bulletin pape

An Approach Craftsmanship Education for Next Generation

    Get PDF
application/pdfWakuwaku monotukuri daisakusenn (=Exciting Craftsmanship Activities) is intends for firsthand experience of primary students and their parents. It is the one of the exhibition events which all the departments of Hiroshima Institute Technology give at college in the summer vacation every year. These activities help the participants to be well informed of college education and promote a better understanding on it as well. Consequently, it develops close relationship between our college and community. The activities are designed to interest in the future, that is, in the next generation, and at the same time give their parents to understand that our college has played the important role in society.departmental bulletin pape

GIS Workshop to Inform the Next Generation of Atomic Bomb Experiences Tracing Signs and Making a Map on Hiroshima

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe GIS workshop was held in Hiroshima City on July 31, 2006, which was planned for “the Day of the Hiroshima Atomic bomb” on August 6. The workshop attendants, who were a new generation having no Atomic bomb suffering, look for signs of radiation exposure and try making a digital map. The GIS (Geographic Information Systems) workshop constituted of two parts of the morning and the afternoon session. Two groups including several primary and secondary students surveyed objects concerning the atomic bomb in the hot summer morning. In the afternoon session, GIS software was used, and photographs and information from a field notebook were plotted on a digital map. It is concluded that the aerial photographs before and after the Atomic bombing have the possibility to succeed a common background to the next generation, which is supported by the GIS.departmental bulletin pape

An Approach to Study Skill for Freshmen in the Department of Health Science

    Get PDF
application/pdfGreat change in their environment requires a special treatment for university freshmen during their pupil-to-student transition. Thus the so called “First Year Experiences” programs are nowadays introduced into many universities. The staff members of the Department of Health Sciences have held a series of lectures called “Freshmen Seminars” in the first semester of 2008, two of which are assigned as “First Year Experiences.” Our own “First Year Experiences” lectures place special emphasis on their study-skills and self-management based on their selfconsciousnes of being a university student. Our survey has revealed that the small-size class made up with five or six students enables most of the freshmen in our department to fully recognize the difference between high school pupils and university students as well as the importance of study-skills in their university lives.departmental bulletin pape

Shaking Table Tests on Steel Potal Framed Stractures with Z-type Brace

    Get PDF
application/pdfA non-compression brace does not resist a compressive force but a tensile one by means of a wedge device. Therefore, the brace does not buckle or loosen due to plastic elongation of the brace. Response of z-type of non-compression braced frame under dynamic loading is predicted to be one-sided. The z-type brace is proposed as an earthquake resistant element with new behavior. Shaking table tests were carried out on one-story z-type braced frame specimens to clarify the one-sided response.departmental bulletin pape

Methods of Frequency Characteristic Measurement of Plastic Optical Fiber : Comparison between Network Analyzer Method and Impulse Response Waveform Method

    Get PDF
application/pdfFrequency characteristics of a plastic optical fiber (POF) measured by two different methods are compared. One is the more conventional method in which network analyzer is used for direct measurements. The other is the method in which an impulse response waveform of the POF is transformed into frequency domain by Fourier Transform. The latter gives different results depending on how the influence of the measuring system is corrected. However, both methods give almost the same results when the correction is implemented by using the frequency characteristics obtained by the Fourier Transform of the impulse response waveform of the measuring system.departmental bulletin pape

An Approach to Education for Landscape Design in the Department of Civil Engineering

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe department of civil engineering gave no lectures and practice for landscape design in the past. In this department, design of the engineering works structure, lectures and practice that in particular play an important role in design have not been given till now. However, learning design has become increasingly important to civil engineering magors in recent trend. It is necessary that they are able to “desgin”, picturing landscape design for the engineering works structure in their minds. We made a plan for giving lectures and practice on landscape design which is necessary for engineering works engineer of the department. Design education given this year will help them to solue problems in the future.departmental bulletin pape

Driving Support System Using In-Vehicle Monocular Camera and Image Processing

    Get PDF
application/pdfIn recent years, an in-vehicle camera is spreading as a drive-recorder. We expect the development of the driving support system for the car, which combines an invehicle camera with image processing technology. In this paper, we described a few key algorithms for driving support system. Mainly, we proposed three methods as follows. ① Detection of lane lines using Hough transform, and generation of search area for car ahead based on lane lines. ② Detection of car ahead using symmetry of car shape. ③ Measurement of the distance between cars using the object which size is known beforehand like a number plate. We clarified experimentally the usefulness of the proposed methods. These methods can be expected as an additional function to an in-vehicle monocular camera.departmental bulletin pape

Loading Tests of Composite Beams Stiffened by Bonding CFRP Plates

    Get PDF
application/pdfWe proposed the rehabilitation technique for secondary steel beam by means of bonding CFRP plates. T shaped-composite beam specimens, which were bonded CFRP plate at lower flange of beam, were made as an application of the rehabilitation. Cyclic and monotonic loading tests were performed on these rehabilitated specimens to clarify the stiffness enhancement of the rehabilitation. From these results, following conclusion and remarks were made. 1) Composite beams stiffness increased by 10% with bonding CFRP plates. 2) Bonding CFRP plate cases no brittle fracture at lower flange of beam.departmental bulletin pape
