Studies on Handling Cups by a SCARA Robot : Application for Loading and Unloading Cups to and/or from a Point Sealing Machine
application/pdfA SCARA robot has been developed to pick up a plastic cup with dry fruits and load it to a point sealing machine. If any new cup is introduced on a conveyor, an infrared range sensor will sense it and measure the distance from that sensor. In addition, force sensors are used to determine when the robot hand is in contact with a cup and grasp a cup of different size, applying the appropriate level of force. These sensors are inexpensive each. In this paper we describe how the center and radius of a circle passing through these measured points can be estimated. The effects on the measurement errors and deviations due to the surface optical characteristics of cups will be examined and the Hough transform method will be used to derive the location of a circle.departmental bulletin pape

Automatic Monitoring and Diagnostic System of the Grid Environment in Accelerator Science Virtual Organization
application/pdfMany studies for the grid computing are preformed in a lot of fields in the world. The PPJ, Particle Physics in Japan, virtual organization is one of the grid computing testbeds in Japan. It consists of 6 institutes in Japan and is based on one of the grid middlewares, that is, gLite. The system is managed and operated very well. But the monitoring and diagnostic systems are not automatic. We have, therefore, developed a monitoring and diagnostic system over the gLite middleware. The system is designed not only to check site status but also to aid site administrators by automatically navigating to appropriate documents in their site operation. The system is able to operate grid sites with lower costs.departmental bulletin pape

The 47-Years Trend of Heavy Rain Occurrence in Chugoku and Shikoku Area, Japan.
application/pdfIn recent years, fears are entertained that severe storms will possibly occur more frequently than before due to global warming. A long term trend of heavy rain occurrence, however, is very difficult to detect because of discreteness of precipitation in time and space. The present study proposes a new approach to analysis for the long term trend of heavy rain occurrence. A logarithmic regression is applied to a histogram of daily precipitation every year. A factor of the logarithmic regression is suggested to represent heavy rain occurrence better than those of exponential and linear regressions. Then, the logarithmic factors have been showing the increasing trends for 47 years since 1961 to 2007, at 22 stations among the total 23 observatory stations under Japan Meteorological Agency in Chugoku and Shikoku area. Although the statistical significance is little at an individual station, the common increasing trend of heavy rain occurrence would be significant for the regional trend.departmental bulletin pape
Development of a Virtual Guitar using Haptic Device
application/pdfIn recent years, a haptic device that output power as one of the computer output devices has been developed. We can get the feeling that we really touch the material through a sensor of haptic device when we touch a material simulated in a computer. In this research, a virtual guitar in which the feeling playing guitar and the sound volume are changed by adjusting power to input with a haptic device was developed. With the haptic device we feel as if we play a genuine guitar. Moreover, it seems that we can play various musical instruments by enhancing the system. The purpose of this paper is to describe the composition of the virtual guitar system and the calculation methods of power and sounds playing virtual guitar.departmental bulletin pape
Convenience Evaluation of Public Traffic in the Suburbs : A Case Study: the Western Area of Saeki Ward
application/pdfThe traffic demand in the city is different depending on the scale of the city. The public transportation facilities by mass transportation form more local route regardless of the center of a city its suburban parts, and the convenience of public traffic is secured in the metropolitan area. On the other hand, in a local metropolitan area public traffic is poorly developed, and people have takes their cars instead. There is a tendency to use automobile traffic instead of public traffic, in a city suburban part. Furthermore, the center of Hiroshima-shi located in a province center city area is surrounded by hills and its flat part has a geographical feature which consists of a delta, and the rate of a flat-ground portion is very low compared with other cities. The mountain of a suburban part has a slope residential section. From there, 300,000 people commute to the center in the morning rush hours. Though the mass transportation traffic is in poor condition in the slope residential quarters, the number of car users has been increasing, which leads to making the traffic jam more terrific. Use of public traffic is promoted as a plan for traffic congestion relief. However, the convenience of the present condition is unclear when using public traffic. Then, what we wish to mention in this paper is to show objectively whether the service level of the public transportation facility in present Hiroshima City is an appropriate “Arc View GIS”.departmental bulletin pape

application/pdfThis report clarifies the development of the education method for training class enforcement of the fieldwork type in the area outside the university. In concreteness, this report performs the class enforcement and the development at the Miyajima learning center of the Hiroshima Institute of Technology. The main contents are as follows: (1) the adjustment of the contents of the allied class subject. (2) the example introduction as the illustration. (3) the device of time, contents, quantity, level to offer the condition. (4) the training of the planning and the announcement method beforehand. The trial of the above-mentioned education method was effective.departmental bulletin pape
An Approach to Scientific Thinking
application/pdfIn this report the author evaluates her freshman seminar that was given in the first semester for the freshmen of the Department of Health Science. The aims of her seminar were to make her students learn the scientific methodology (the scientific thinking) through actual experiences on the miracles of the sense of human taste using taste-modifying substances such as the Gymnema sylvestre tea and the miracle fruits. It has been revealed that, in order for the students to realize the scientific thinking, a thorough disclosure of the thinking process on a step-by-step basis followed by their own practices on the carefully-selected subjects with intended variations is one of the keys to fruitful outcomes.departmental bulletin pape
