A study on rehabiritation of week-panel-type beam-to-column connection by means of non-compression knee-breace

    Get PDF
application/pdfWeak-panel-type beam-to-column connections exist in steel structures with H-shaped columns. These connections possess good energy absorption capability, but the structures with them show less strength and larger residual deformation after an earthquake than strong-panel-type ones. Therefore, authors propose rehabilitation of the connections by use of non-compression knee-braces, and experimental study on the technique is carried out to verify more strength of the connections.departmental bulletin pape

Vibration Control for a Pendulum System with a Movable Weight along a Horizontal Track Using a Neural Network Type Controller

    Get PDF
application/pdfA parallel-type learning controller, in which a three-layer neural network (3NN) is connected in parallel with a pole allocation (PA) controller, is presented as a method for actively controlling the vibration amplitude of a pendulum system. The controller utilizes a movable weight that is actuated along a horizontal track, the center of which is situated at the pendulum pivot. The 3NN is specially designed to have its error function Jn=^^^T based on the PA controller output u1, with the result that the object plant input, u=u1+u2 , becomes the 3NN output u2 with an increasing learning cycle. The proposed 3NN control system, including an N-dimensional observer , is not only capable of realizing the active vibration suppression effect maximally as specific damping capacity (SDC)?0.065 (ca. 25 times that of free vibration damping) , but also exhibits a markedly more robust vibration damping effect than the conventional PA control system.departmental bulletin pape

Application of Numerical method to Complex integration

    Get PDF
application/pdfA method of numerical integration is, as a general rule, applied to a real integral, namely, integration along a real axis. In this note, a trial of application of numerical integration to complex integral is made. In several cases, we have made an error analysis of trapezoidal rule and Simpson’s rule. In particular, in case of integral of complex function taken along a circle, it is shown that the error is minimized if the test points are selected at even intervals.departmental bulletin pape

A experimental study on anchor-bolt-yield-type exposed column-base with multi-rows of anchor bolts subjected to variable axial-force and bending

    Get PDF
application/pdfExperimental studies were carried out on anchor-bolt-yield-type exposed column bases subjected to constant compression or tension to obtain different types of resistant mechanisms and restoring force characteristics due to a magnitude of the constant axial force. In this paper, models of resistant mechanisms and restoring force characteristics are proposed on exposed column bases subjected to a variable axial force by use of the experimental results and the models of restoring force characteristics under constant axial forces.departmental bulletin pape

A Study on the Deterioration of Mortar Due to Sulfuric Acid Attack in Sewerage

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe deterioration of mortar caused by sulfuric acid attack using cementitious materials was investigated. To prevent the mass reduction in a dilute sulfuric acid solution, we increased content of admixture (silica fume, blast furnace fume, blast furnace slag, fly ash, and whetstone powder) and decreased cement content. But, in spite of small weight loss in a dilute sulfuric acid solution, large penetration of sulfuric acid into mortar occurred in case of mortar with low compressive strength. Therefore, sulfuric resistance should be estimated both from weight loss and from penetration.departmental bulletin pape

Construction and Coloring of Semi-Regular Polyhedrons

    Get PDF
application/pdfThis paper deals with the coloring of semi-regular polyhedrons. The famous four-color theorem comes into effect for this type of polyhedrons as well as the 2-dimensional maps. The semi-regular polyhedrons are constructed from regular polyhedrons by means of such operations as truncation. In the cource of the constructions of semi-regular polyhedrons from regular polyhedrons, a careful observation leads us a finding of coloring of the semi-regular polyhedrons by use of minimum kind of colors. This method is global, whereas our proposal in the previous report is local.departmental bulletin pape

Melting of Ice Layer Placed Vertically in the Air Under Condition of Natural Convection

    Get PDF
application/pdfTransient melting of ice layer placed vertically in the air under condition of natural convection was analyzed and compared with experimental results. First, the heat transfer coefficient on the falling film surface was investigated experimentally, where the natural convection and the vapor condensation of the humid air occur simultaneously. In the data analysis, the Lewis relation was used between the heat transfer coefficient and the mass transfer coefficient. Then, applying the obtained heat transfer coefficient on the falling film surface, the transient melting of ice was calculated. Lastly, a melting experiment was conducted using vertically placed ice layers and ice cylinders. The calculated results agreed well with experimental results.departmental bulletin pape

Universal Grammar : A Problem or A Mystery?

    Get PDF
application/pdfChomsky has argued that we are biologically endowed with Universal Grammar (UG) and all human languages can be deduced from UG by setting its parameters. But so far he has not discovered what constitutes UG despite his repeated remodeling the framework of UG for nearly fifty years. Some doubt whether there is really UG built into our brains at birth. On the other hand, he has claimed that human beings have capacities with their scope and limits just as other organisms. As a result, he concludes that there are problems we can solve in one way or another and mysteries we cannot unravel forever. Can we solve his UG? Is his UG a problem or a mystery?departmental bulletin pape

Lateral Buckling Behavior of Build-Up Member Made of H-SA700 High strength steel (Part2 Experimental Results)

    Get PDF
application/pdfHigh strength Steel (H-SA700) was developed by Japanese Steel companies. Effective usage of the high strength steel for buildings was proposed in this paper. It was a weld-free build-up members which are fastened by high tension bolts of two cold-formed channels. To evaluate elastic flexural strength of the build-up members, it is necessary to get weak-axis flexural rigidity, torsion rigidity and warping rigidity. We proposed the formula of flexural strength, torsion and warping constants. We showed the validity and accuracy of the formula by use of comparison with experimental results.departmental bulletin pape

A study on non-slip-type exposed column-base subjected to variable axial-force and bending

    Get PDF
application/pdfAn experimental study on non-slip-type exposed column bases proposed by the authors, subjected to both cyclic horizontal loadings and variable axial forces in the limits of compression was carried out to make clear bending moment characteristics of the column bases and to propose models of restoring force characteristics. The following conclusions were drawn from the experimental results, 1)The restoring force characteristics of the non-slip-type column bases become linear-from-origin-type under variable axial forces, and the restoring force characteristics show curves similar to those under monotonic loading.departmental bulletin pape
