    Get PDF
application/pdfEffectiveness of the small group instruction on a mathematics class in Department of Environmental Design has been investigated. Some of students in the Department have low academic achievement in mathematics and entered under several entrance examination also for literature course. Through the affective and cognitive evaluation it is realized that for compulsory subjects in mathematics the size of the class consisting of students who do not understand high school mathematics properly will be about 20. Certain small group class organization will be needed in such Department.departmental bulletin pape

Numerical analysis and structural system of frame with Z-type non-compression brace(Part 1 Rigid-frame)

    Get PDF
application/pdfNon-compression (NC) braces resist only a tensile axial force. A frame with Z-type NC braces deform in a single side of direction under a cyclic ground motion. An analytical study on frames with Z-type NC braces was carried out to clarify deformation behavior of the rigid frames. The following conclusions were obtained from the analytical results: 1) Multi-story frames with same-directional Z-type braces deform in a single direction under seismic ground motions. 2) Frames with alternate Z-type braces deform in small top displacement because of multi-degrees of deformation under earthquakes.departmental bulletin pape

Transverse excitation modes in liquid metals:Do they contradict a common sense written in high school textbooks on physics?

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe transverse acoustic excitation modes were detected by inelastic x–ray scattering in liquid Ga in the Q range above 9 nm‒1 although liquid Ga is mostly described by a hard–sphere liquid. An ab initio molecular dynamics simulation clearly supports this finding. From the detailed analysis for the S (Q,ω) spectra with a good statistic quality, the lifetime of 0.5 ps and the propagating length of 0.4–0.5 nm can be estimated for the transverse acoustic phonon modes, which may correspond to the lifetime and size of cages formed instantaneously in liquid Ga. The transverse excitations are also observed in liquid Fe and Cu, which again indicate the existence of small clusters. In these liquid metals, the short–living cluster may originate from icosahedra, which are characteistic of liquid transition metals.departmental bulletin pape

Potential of the Akamoku,Sargassum Horneri for Food Utilization - With Special Reference to that Harvested in the Chikuzen Sea,Fukuoka,Japan -

    Get PDF
application/pdfSeaweeds have been traditionally consumed as food in East Asian countries, especially in Japan, Korea and China. Recently, they have been generally accepted in part of the dairy diet as a low caloric food in Western countries. Seaweeds contain a large amount of mucilage polysaccharides, such as agar, alginate and carrageenan, which have been utilized as phycocolloids, gelling agents and emulsifiers in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Brown algae have been reported to contain the components of physiological activities. Thus, the demand for seaweeds as foods and biochemical resources is imcreasingly expected. However, limited numbers of seaweed species are available for practical use. Among the remaining unexplored species is Sargassum horneri, a brown alga growing in the coastal sea. S. horneri has been used as food only in some limited areas in Japan, but the food products processed by boiling it have recently appeared in the markets. To enable the practical use of S. horneri as an edible resource, it is important to obtain information about its nutritional components and their seasonal variations in relation to its growth and maturity. In the present review, the author explains about the potential of the Akamoku, S. horneri and food utilization, and discuss mainly that harvested from the Chikuzen Sea, Fukuoka, Japan.departmental bulletin pape

On Fastener using Half Moon Shaped Bolt for High-Strength Steel Member(Part 1 Concept of Half Moon Shaped Bolt)

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe authors have been involved in the research project to develop members of built-up structures using high-strength steel of 780N/mm2 that are utilized in buildings which can withstand a severe earthquake (JMA seismic intensity of 7) and enables rapid functional recovery. We propose weld-free built-up structural members that have the cross section of two high-strength steel channels stitched together with bolts. Joints for high-strength members are required a lot of bolts by use of ordinary friction bolts. Joint length of the friction bolts is so longer as to avoid a practical structural design such as high rise buildings. Hence, the authors present a new fastener for high-strength steel members. A new fastener is half moon shaped bearing bolt. The fastener has high strength due to bearing bolts. And it has no slip phenomena, so high stiffness of fastener is promised. This paper shows the concept and capabilities of presented bolts.departmental bulletin pape

A Power System Drawing Assistance System by Using Ruby/Tk

    Get PDF
application/pdfIn recent years the term “smart grid” is emerging in the media. The smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using two-way digital technology to control appliances at consumers’ homes to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability and transparency. In order to operate the smart grid properly, the power system analysis is necessary. The analysis of smart grid is required the power system model. However the configuration of the smart grid is frequently changed. To cope with this situation, power system drawing assistance systems are required. This paper proposes a power system drawing assistance system by using Ruby/Tk. Ruby is a scripting language, in the recent tradition of Perl, Python, and Tcl. Ruby originated in Japan during the mid-1990s and was initially developed and designed by Yukihiro Matsumoto. It allows for a rapid development cycle and the rapid prototyping of applications. In order to the effectiveness of the proposed system, a prototype system is developed. The results show the proposed system is promising the assistance of the power system engineers.departmental bulletin pape

Analytical study on residual deformation of steel structure with self-centering beam-to-column connection

    Get PDF
application/pdfBeam-to-column connections with a wedge device show linear-from-origin-type restoring force characteristics and can possess self-centering capability that reduces residual horizontal displacements of a structure acted by an earthquake force. The connection with the wedge device can be used at an outer column, but it can hardly to be applied to an inner column. This paper proposes a new idea that the wedge device can be installed the beam-to-column connection of the inner column. An experimental study on the beam-to-column connection with the wedge device of the inner column subjected to cyclic loadings was carried out. The experimental results showed that the cyclic characteristics became linear-from-origin-type in loadings and oriented-to-origin-type in unloading.departmental bulletin pape

application/pdfWe had proposed the rehabilitation technique for secondary steel beam by means of bonding CFRP plates. For the rehabilitation technique, it is very important to clarify the creep properties of the composite plate made of CFRP and steel plate. Creep tests of the composite plate made of steel and CFRP plate were performed. Allowable shear stress limit was shown in case of 20,30,40,50 and 60℃ ambient temperature. Also, design data for secondary steel beam so as to suppress the maximum shear stress in adhesive within allowable stress limit, were shown.departmental bulletin pape
