A Comparative View in Mathematics Education on Calculus

    Get PDF
application/pdfEffectiveness of teaching methods in two classes on Calculus I as a compulsory mathematics subject of a Department in the HIT has been investigated. The two classes are formed by students as groups who have almost equal academic achievement scores’ distribution in the freshpeople math placement test examined in April. Even in such classes there are about 40 percent students who do not understand high school mathematics properly. The present evaluation is made mainly through two regular examination sheets which are totally common for the two classes. It is realized that the teaching manner will affect students’ performance positively and hence, before starting classes, serious concrete discussion on teaching manner along mathematical contents should be done. Furthermore, the small group class organization(i.e., consisting of less than 30 students)will be needed beyond several teaching manner.departmental bulletin pape

HIT Basic Physics Textbook Series : (2) Mechanics Basic to Engineering

    Get PDF
application/pdfA series of textbooks on basic physics has been published in our Institute. A group of staffs responsible for the physics education of freshmen has edited and revised these textbooks which are used for lectures, exercises and student experiments for basic physics. In order to notify the character of each textbook, the concept for editing has been described in series for the respective ones. This report is the second one. The textbook used for the lecture in basic physics entitled “Mechanics Basic to Engineering” is presented. The hints for future revisions are offered to make the textbook more useful to the physics education in our Institute.departmental bulletin pape

Crustal Movement Observation System Using Quasi-Zenith Satellites

    Get PDF
application/pdfWe propose observation system of crustal movement at the area of earth stations using two quasizenith satellites which have retro-directive antenna on board. Inthis sysyem, the crustal movement is obtained by interfering with two singnals from retro-directive antennas which transmit the receiving waves from the earth station antenna towarad the direction of the earth station antenna. From the link budget of this system, for the earth station anntenna we select the spherical reflector anntenna having two anntena beams.departmental bulletin pape

Fastener using half moon shaped bolts for high-strength steel member

    Get PDF
application/pdfA new bolt is named the half-moon shaped bolt, and it is cut diagonally in a half-moon shape and fills up a hole by fastening a nut. The bolt resists a sharing force as the bearing bolt. An experimental study was carried out to clarify the maximum strength of the bolted joint. The end-off fracture of the middle plate occurred in the case of short end distance of the plate. The bearing fracture of the plate occurred together with the fracture at the smallest area of the bolt in the case of long end distance of the plate.departmental bulletin pape

    Marie de France's Isopet

    Get PDF
application/pdfMarie de France is said to be the first woman poet in French literature. The purpose of this paper is to examine what sort of person Marie de France was and what her Isopet written in Anglo-Norman was like. This examination is based on a study of the morals she gave to each story in the Isopet. Despite her claim that she translated it from English, it seems to me to have been translated from Latin, but she freely altered the “characters” and morals in the fables. The first English translation of Aesop is, as far as I know, Caxton’s Aesop (1484), and Marie’s Isopet precedes it by more than two and a half centuries.departmental bulletin pape

A study on a room space monitoring system for creating a comfortable environment

    Get PDF
application/pdfA lot of network technologies are developed to create a better life. The smart house is one of good examples. A control of power supply is well performed in such a house. It is very important to control it, but cannot create a comfortable environment. We, therefore, developed a room space monitoring system with using SunSPOT device to sense temperature and humidity and embedded computer to display measurement data. We developed the room space monitoring system and also focused on battery life of the sensor and proposed a control method to make it longer. The proposed method results 6.5% longer of a battery life at the maximum.departmental bulletin pape

Artificial Class Simulations Based on Multi-Agent Systems with Non-disclosure Value Selection

application/pdfAlthough bullying at school is one of serious social problems to be solved, no effective measures have been established. As an approach from computer science, Maeda et al. made an agent-based model for a process building the friendship among a group and have considered and researched the generation mechanism of isolated or excluded agents regarded as potential victims of bullying. In this paper, we investigate the effect of introducing non-disclosure value selection into the agent-based model proposed by Maeda et al.conference pape
