Experimental study on CFRP fracture behavior bonding H-shaped steel beam
application/pdfAn experimental study on H-shaped steel beam bonded CFRP plate is carried out to investigate CFRP fracture mechanism. Four-points bending tests are employed to clarify load-deformation curves of the beams strengthened by the CFRP plates partially bonding tension flange. The usual bonding type of specimens show CFRP fracture, but a new bonding type of specimens, that the CFRP plate is bonded without both edges, show no CFRP fracture.departmental bulletin pape
On University-High School Cooperation Program in the Department of Civil Engineering and Urban Design
application/pdfUniversity-High School Cooperation Program is a program in which high school students participate in university lectures and practicums for the sake of gaining some idea what learning at university is like. For the effective implementation of this program, our department made five points to note.
The first policy is to have students use facilities which are not available in high schools and realize different ways of thinking. The second one is to have them understand the basics of civil engineering.The third is to introduce them to various experiments and trainings proper to the field of engineering. The fourth is to have them experience what HIT students are actually doing. The fifth is to help them write a report they need to submit to their high school for credit after they return.

Survey of special activities in public technical high schools in Hiroshima Prefecture
application/pdfThis study is a survey of special activities in public technical high schools in Hiroshima Prefecture. A questionnaire was carried out about Special Activities, the Period for Integrated Studies, Moral Education and Extracurricular Activities in May, 2014.
The analysis of the survey results has revealed the present situations, as well as some of the issues, of the abovementioned activities in public technical high schools in Hiroshima Prefecture.

Assessment of the Pocket Book for Supporting Campus Life and Career Development (The second report)
application/pdfThe aim of this study is to develop and assess the CC pocket book, supporting Campus life and Career Development for our department students. The CC pocket book contains various things on campus life and study goals, schedule management, jobs information of our department, and so on. The third editions had been published in the current fiscal year, and distributed to our department students. We took the questionnaires of the CC pocket book for the students as the usage survey. As the result, more than half of students have been using it after one year from distribution. A significant percentage of students would like to recommend the CC pocket book for younger students. Although there remain some actions to promote of utilization, but we have shown the effectiveness of the original pocket book for the students.departmental bulletin pape
Attempt of effective writing on a blackboard by screen presentation in hydraulics education
application/pdfSome students take notes very slow and are not able to follow explanations of a lecture. Active use of the screen at the front in a lecture room is considered in the lecture of hydraulics and river engineering and in the practice of hydraulics. Two 120 inch-scale screens are set up in the classroom and the paintings and writings devices are connected these screens. Some handouts with some blanks for a student to describe, distribute to students on the day. And these handouts are projected on the screen, and they are written and shown by teacher on the screen in substitution for a blackboard. This method raises students’ concentration and the measure for study. Substitution of the blackboard by screens is popular legible for students.departmental bulletin pape
The current state and the issue of Structural Strength in Civil Engineering Education

But a lot of engineering students at university level do not understand the structural strength, because they did not study physics at high school. They do not understand the trigonometric functions, so they do cannot solve the truss structures which are composed of triangles. Saussure and Chomsky ― Langue and I-language ―
application/pdfFerdinand de Saussure and Noam Chomsky are considered to be the most influential linguists. In this paper, we contrast their accounts concerning the following issues of language and try to make clear differences between them, mainly referring to Saussure’s langue and Chomsky’s I-language: 1) How concepts emerge, 2) How phonemes appear, 3) How languages change, 4) Where syntax belongs to, 5) Whether language is social or biological, 6) What parts of speech are, and 7) Whether languages are delimited or not. The Consistency of Sand-Clay Mixed Soils
application/pdfIn order to investigate the consistency characteristics of sand-clay mixed soils, a series of consistency limit tests was performed on sand and clay mixtures with various fine-grained soils content. As the result the following things became clear. The consistency changes drastically on the boundary of fine fraction content Fc about 20%. The relationship between consistency limit of sand-clay mixed soils and consistency limit of fine soils is obtained as a function of fine fraction content. In this paper, experimental results and their discussion are presented to show some effects of the fine fraction content of sand-clay mixed soils on its geotechnical properties such as compressibility and shear strength.departmental bulletin pape
Measurement of welder’s movement for welding skill analysis
application/pdfWelding training has some disadvantages such as long time required and need for a considerable quantity of training material; in addition, it is dangerous for beginners. To overcome these limitations, a welding training system using virtual reality can be used to teach appropriate tool movements. However, most trainees may not perform appropriate welding even if they understand the appropriate tool movements. Therefore, teaching appropriate movements of the arm can be more effective than teaching the appropriate movements of the tools. The goal of this study was to produce an effective welding simulator to teach appropriate arm movements. This paper discusses measurements of a welder’s behavior. The angle of each joint of the welder’s arm, including the shoulder, elbow, and wrist, was measured using bend sensors. Electromyography (EMG) sensors were used to perform surface electromyography on a welder’s arm. Six sensor electrodes were placed on two muscles of the upper arm and four muscles of the forearm. A workpiece clamper with charge-coupled device cameras measured the three-dimensional coordinates of each electrode tip. A three-dimensional surface measuring instrument measured the shape of the welding bead. The welding tasks of three professional welders and four beginners were measured. The differences between the movements of a professional’s arm and those of a beginner’s were found. This showed that the beginners moved their elbow and shoulder, whereas the professionals moved all three joints. The EMG signals indicated a tendency for the frequency of variation of the beginners to be greater than that of the professionals.
