A Study of the Possible Service Range of Streetcars
application/pdfAmong conventional major factors in evaluating public transportation systems are construction and administration costs, transportation capacity, and speed, all of which are related to the functional capability of the transportation system itself. To be sure, these are important factors, but the fact that the system has high functional capabilities doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the system is truly user-friendly.
In the case of Hiroshima city, the midtown area is smaller than those of big cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, and so it is likely that passengers need to spend a higher ration of time for “vertical” movement. In this sense, it seems necessary to assess the user-friendliness of a transportation system from the viewpoint of the total time passengers need to reach their destination.
For the sake of evaluating a transportation system and its plan from such a viewpoint, the authors consider not only functional capabilities of a transportation system itself, but also the total performance capabilities including walking time passengers need, and assess the user-friendliness of various transportation systems from a comparative point of view.departmental bulletin pape
Inhibitory effect of cadmium on competitive nodulation ability of Bradyrhizobium japonicum
application/pdfCompetitive nodulation abilities of Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains USDA110ET and A1017ET were significantly depressed by growing the strains in yeast extract-mannitol broth supplemented with 2μM CdCl2. Soybean seedlings were co-inoculated with each test strain and its competitor strain 138NR, and the bacteria in nodules formed on 21 days old plant roots were identified by the antibiotic resistant markers. Cell surface hydrophobicity of each test strain increased by growing the strains with 2μM CdCl2, though definite increase in bacterial attachment to plant root surface was hindered by excessive secretion of exopolysaccharides of the strains. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that growing the test strains in the medium with 2μM CdCl2 induced the production of lipopolysaccharides of small molecular sizes. The results in this study suggest that cadmium of low concentration causes the weakening of competitive nodulation ability of rhizobia through inhibition of the lipopolysaccharide synthesis.departmental bulletin pape
Analytical study on column joint with wedge device
application/pdfA column joint with self-centering capability is proposed and numerical analysis of a structure with the column joint is carried out to clarify the self-centering performance of the structure. It is obtained from the analytical results that the frame with the proposed column joints shows equivalent stiffness to rigid column-base and no residual deformation after an earthquake grand motion.departmental bulletin pape
Shaking table tests on single-story anti-symmetric Z-type NC braced frame focusing on one-directional incremental torsional deformation behavior
application/pdfAn anti-symmetric Z-type NC braced frame is proposed by the authors. This structural system has an advantage that elastic strain energy absorption capability due to one directional incremental distortional deformation in a small earthquake decreases seismic response of the structure without any damage. In this paper, one-story and one-span model specimen is employed and shaking table test and numerical analysis are carried out to examine fully the incremental distortional deformation behavior. Elastic-plastic restoring force characteristics of the braced structures and experimental results are discussed in comparison with the analytical results.departmental bulletin pape
Global Temperature-Quest for Models with Superior Fitting
application/pdfThe record on the data on global annual average temperature over the last thirty two years presents a continuous increase (though very mild) in temperature over years and this warming of the globe is, indeed, a matter of deepest concern to all of us at the moment. It is required to develop appropriate measures to contain the temperature-rise and when such measures (which perceptibly and most satisfactorily address the problem) are created, it is our mandate to implement those holistically in order to save the human civilization from a perilous future. Global temperature models expose the inherent trend existing in the temperature-record. A literature-survey on modelling of global temperature reveals the following articles, Pal and Pal, 2011, Pal et al. (2013) and Pal et al. (2014), wherein the precision levels (in terms of R2 values) of the models did not exceed 0.89.This paper presents superior global annual average temperature models (parametric based on mathematical functions) with precision levels (in terms of R2 values) varying in the range, 0.875 to 0.940.departmental bulletin pape
A basic study on the characteristics of the water generation using TSS with solar heat
application/pdfIn the world, approximately 800 million people have difficulty in use of hygienic water. It is necessary to use the water of non-hygienic well water, pond, and river in the country which is not maintained of water service facilities. Because a water purifier and the water conversion device are expensive, and stable electricity and high technology are necessary, anyone is not a thing usable anywhere. Therefore, the use of the solar heat water conversion device is the appropriate solution in these countries. It is a reason to be a method to secure the drinking water which it is low cost, a low technique, electricity-free, and is safe. In this study, the characteristics of the water generation in the solar heat water conversion device (TSS: Tubular Solar Still) made clear by outdoor experiments in Hiroshima, Japan and indoor experiments. Basic knowledge of the relation between the production of water generation and the initial depth of the water and the reflection rate of the ground surface in the device is got in this study.departmental bulletin pape
Interactive class with Minutes-papers in MIT method on River Engineering Studies
application/pdfThe interactive class that used an active-learning with the minutes-papers is worked on. The minutes-papers are used on the lecture of river engineering at the sixth semester. There are written at the last ten minutes in this lecture by students. The progress report to catch the students’ understanding level, and the questions and the uncertainty from the student are described in these. Especially, the learning effect for the student can be improved by making questions of the examination in the MIT method. The following is clarified that both concentration for the lecture and consideration to study are improved with these minutes- papers.departmental bulletin pape
Educational Improvement by Introducing tablet PC into Survey Study Training
application/pdfSurvey study training is an important practicum in our department, but there is a serious problem in its implementation. Students in this course are required to process the data obtained by survey, and such processes include mathematical calculations. Though these calculations are mostly simple, students tend to lack note-taking skills, and so they often try to process the data without understanding calculation processes well. This problem can be clearly observed from many of the reports they submit.
As an attempt to solve this problem, we started to have students buy note PC two years ago, and have them use the spreadsheet of Excel. According to our observation, this helped students understand calculation processes better, because it was no longer necessary for them to spend too much time carrying out mathematical calculations by hand on paper.
In this academic year, we introduced tablet PC instead of Note PC. We found that the use of tablet PC can be more effective for students to understand calculation processes, because it makes it easier for students to input the data on site and share them with each other.departmental bulletin pape
