International Collaborative Learning in a Foreign Language: Social Presence and Satisfaction within Two Modes of Discussion
Get PDFapplication/pdfWith international collaborative learning and the use of synchronized CSCL (SCSL) tools increasing, the best educational use of these tools is being considered. When designing a learning support system for foreign language learning, it is necessary to know how social presence, the cultural context of learners, their satisfaction, and learning outcomes interact and inform design choices. In this study, we investigated the relationships among two modes of interaction (text chat or video chat), social presence, ethnicity, and satisfaction. We found that group consciousness and comfort in conversing were raised higher in text chat than in video chat and that text chat groups reported a higher level of perceived social presence than video chat groups.departmental bulletin pape
Restoring force characteristics of plate stiffened H-shaped steel braced frame

Numerical analyses of braced frames ussing H-shaped members with/without stiffened plate as the brace member are conducted to clarify restoring force characteristics of the braced frame. Basic study of amount of water vapor in humid air in the rectangler-type TSS
Get PDFapplication/pdfSafe drinking water may not be supplied steadily at some areas in the world. Water service facilities are not maintained at the water of a well, a river and the pond is used in these countries, therefore the use of the water conversion device using the solar heat is suitable as a method to product low cost and safe drinking water. TSS devices are carried out to make clear the between patterns of solar radiation and production mechanism in outdoor on fine days at August in 2013-2014 in Hiroshima. The initial depth of water in TSS-device affects the production-inertia and the amount of water vapor in humid air in the device. The production of water varied according to three patterns of solar radiation in one day. The amount of the production of water increases as the water depth is shallow during the time of solar radiation increase after sunrise. On the other hand, the amount of the production of water increases as the water depth is deep, during the time of solar radiation decrease and after sunset.departmental bulletin pape
Earthquake resistant performance of steel frame with column connection by wedge-device
Get PDFapplication/pdfA huge earthquake produces residual deformation of steel structures, and large residual deformations make structures unusable. This paper proposes column connections using a wedge device to reduce residual deformations, and loading tests and numerical analyses of these connections are carried out to determine their performance. Experimental results show linear-from-origin-type restoring force characteristics of the connections, and analytical results show no residual deformation and reduction of deformation and acceleration of upper stories than collapse one. These results clarify the earthquake resistant performance of frames with these connections.departmental bulletin pape

Comparison of Testing Evaluations between the Placement Test and the Final Examination
Get PDFapplication/pdfIt is considered to be difficult to design mathematics lectures for undergraduate classes if a variety of students exist in the same class. To grasp the structure of the classes as early as possible, placement tests are often performed. Using the testing results, students are classified into different level classes. However, the students in the lowest classes may lose pride and cooperation attitude. Thus, our university decided not to provide such classes. In such a situation, much more efforts are required for teachers to enhance students’ skills. To check if the progress of mathematics in undergraduate classes, we have compared the final test results with the placement test results. The item response theory (IRT) is used to evaluate the abilities of students rather than the classical test theory.|We have found that 1) students made progress by well-arranged lecture design, 2) there seems to be a positive correlation between the placement test results and the final test results in analysis classes, 3) much more progresses were seen for students without higher level high school education than those with that, 4) in linear algebra classes, no clear relationships were observed between the placement test results and the final test results. A Case of Flipped Classroom for the Undergraduate Mathematics Education —— Analysis ——
Get PDFapplication/pdfTo undergraduate mathematics classes, flipped classrooms were performed. The theme is an application for the Taylor expansion to find the approximate probabilities for a normal distribution. There is a critical issue in applying the Taylor expansion in some cases. For example, even though the exponential function can be expressed by an infinite polynomial series for all real numbers, to find the approximate numbers using a Taylor series with finite terms, we have to know in advance the relation between the degree of the polynomial and the accuracy of approximation. An intriguing problem to find the approximate probabilities for a normal distribution provides many educational lessons for beginners and practitioners of undergraduate mathematical courses.|The flipped classrooms were successful. Students felt stimulating and had fun in classrooms. To avoid boring mathematics classes using stereotype exercises, we have found that the flipped classrooms are useful in undergraduate mathematics education. Get PDFapplication/pdf4年前から著者らは毎年学科で発行し続けているオリジナル手帳（CC手帳; Campus life and Career）による学生の大学生活とキャリア意識の向上を図っており，今年度で第四版となる。本稿では，1年次から配布し続けている現4年次生に対して，使用状況ならびに2015年9・10月のアンケート実施時までの就職活動結果を併せて，追跡調査・分析を行い，CC手帳の効果について検証した。その結果，就職活動時期に入ったあたりでCC手帳の有益性を改めて理解されるようになり，CC手帳に対して好意的な学生が内定を取りやすい傾向にあることが分かった。departmental bulletin pape
Teaching Effect of Experiential Lesson Using Renewable Energy Generators
