はじめに
大分県別府市鶴見岳一帯には，鶴見岳火山活動
により形成された多くの酸性熱水変質帯が広がっ
ている。かつては別府白土と称し塚原,明馨温泉，
鍋山地域で盛んに採掘された。現在はすべて廃山
となっているが採掘跡は現在も残っている(崩壊
防止工事のため小規模な採掘跡はコンクリートに
よって被覆されてしまった)。一帯では変質作用
を与えた噴気活動が現在でも認められ,噴気孔に
は針状～錐状結晶をなす昇華硫黄の群晶が生じて
いる。噴気孔周辺や噴気の及んでいる崩壊地には，
H２Ｓを含む噴気ガスと変質帯粘土(halloysite)や
pyriteあるいはmamasiteなどの鉄硫化物との反応
により生成したalunogen,halotrichiteが多量に認め
られる。明磐温泉にある「湯の華」小屋では噴気
帯に変質粘土(酸性白土)を敷き詰め，藁小屋で湿
度調整を行い，半人工的にalunogen，halomchite
を製造しており，これらの鉱物の成長過程を観察
することができる。これまでに別府地域の変質帯
からgypsum，alunogen，halotrichiteなどの湯ノ
華構成鉱物（松本ら,1975)の他に，皆川・野戸
(1987)によるparacoquimbite，ferricopiapite，友
永・松本(1989)によるburkeite,皆川(1994)による
tamarugite,voltaite,metavoltaiteなどの報告がある。
今回調査を行った鍋山白土鉱山跡は明馨温泉か
ら２kｍの林道終点地点，鍋山の西に位置してお
り(Fig.1)，塚原白土鉱山変質帯とほぼ同様の変質
鉱物(主としてhalloysite,cristobalite,alunite)からな
る。変質帯には暗黒色のpyrite＋marcasite共生塊
が散在している。この鉄硫化鉱物塊は数１０ミク
ロン以下の微粒結晶集合体から形成されているた
め分解しやすく，塊の上や割れ目に，各種含水
Fe-硫酸塩鉱物の生成が認められる。このような
含水硫酸塩鉱物は硫化鉄鉱に富む泥岩などの風化
や崩壊の原因物質として知られており，これらの
詳細な産状や記載は防災面からも重要と考えられ
る。今回，鍋山白土鉱床を流れる小川
の側壁中や,あるいは転石として認められるpyrite
とｍａ1℃asite共生塊の表面や割れ目に露華をなす
rhomboclaseを見出したので産状等を報告する。
RhomboclaseはHFe(SO4)２．４H20の組成を持つ斜
方晶系の鉄硫酸塩鉱物でありmelanterite，
memeriteなど共に報告されているが，これまで本
邦からの報告例はない。

じた小さな割れ目に１ｍｍ以下のバラ状集合体を
なし生成しているrigo2-2)。集合体は径0.5ｍｍ以
下の無色透明，ガラス光沢のある薄板状結晶の亜
平行連晶からなっている(Fig.2-3)。バラ状集合体
をなすIhomboclaseをガラス板上で破砕し偏光顕
微鏡観察を行った。結晶は鏡下で菱形を基調とす
るＣ(001)面からなる板状結晶をなす。Ｃ(001)面に
平行に跨開が認められ『i9.2-4)，破断面はカイガ
ラ状を呈する。浸液法による屈折率はα＝1.54(1)，
γ＝1.63(1)(βは未測定),複屈折はやや高く（γ－
α=0.09)であり，このような鉱物学的性質はこれ
までの報告例と良く一致している。Rhomboclase
を見出した鉄硫化鉱物塊上には無色透明，霜柱状
～紛状のmelanteriteが生成しており，その一部は
脱水しrozeniteに変化している。またカリフラワ
ー状をなす黄色のfeITicopiapiteがmelanteriteある
いはrOzenite結晶を被って生成している。鍋山産
IhomboclaseのＸ線粉末回析値(測定条件:日本電子
製Ｘ線粉末回折装置Ｆｅ管球，Ｍｎ‐filte喝
30ｋＶ-10mA)を通ｂｌｅ２に示している。JCPDS
27-245,およびCerrodePasco,Peru産のＸ線デー
鍋山白土鉱山産硫酸塩鉱物
鍋山白土鉱山は角閃石安山岩を主とする鶴見火
山岩中に発達した酸性変質岩を採掘した鉱山であ
る。採掘跡はそのまま放置されており，至る所で
硫黄の生成を伴う噴気活動が観察され，硫酸塩鉱
物が採掘斜面を被うように生成している。この地
域で現在までに報告された硫酸塩鉱物のリストを
唖ｂｌｅｌに示している。生成鉱物は噴気活動の影
響を受けて生成した鉱物群(タイプ１）と，黄鉄鉱
や白鉄鉱の集合体が雨水などの作用により分解生
成した鉱物群（タイプ2)に分けることができる。
タイプｌの鉱物は噴気ガスの影響がおよんでい
る崩壊斜面を被って幅１０数ｍの範囲に生成して
おり，また噴気帯周辺部に数１０ｃｍ径のコロニー
状に露華をなしている。これらの斜面を被う硫酸
塩鉱物はFe-Al-SO4-H20系鉱物であり，Ａｌを含む
鉱物で特徴付けられる。白色皮殻状からリンペン
状そして毛状集合体をなすalunogen,halotrichiteが
大半を占め，窪みや噴気近くでは大きく成長して
いる。これらの鉱物は水溶‘性であり，湿度の高い
環境や降雨によって，短期間に溶解してしまう場
合も多い。また降水量が少ない乾燥した期間が続
くと，脱水，酸化等によりhalotrichiteの一部は黄
色のcopiapite～企rricopiapiteに変化する。
タイプ２の鉱物はpyriteとmarcasite集合塊の分
解により生成したFe-SO4-H20系硫酸塩鉱物であ
り，これらはＡｌを主要成分として含まないことで
特徴付けられる。採掘跡を流れる小沢に露頭をな
すpyrite＋marcasite塊レンズや転石から採集した
鉄硫酸塩鉱物試料のｘ線粉末回折実験結果から同
定した鉱物は，本邦初産のrhomboclase及び
melanterite，rozenite，ferricopiapiteである。
Rhomboclaseの生成している試料には常に
melanteriteが認められる。現地調査及び試料採集
は平成16年７月，降雨後一週間程度たった日に行
った。

RhomboclaseはこれまでにSocavonmine,Bolivia，
SmolnikSlovakia,Esperanzamine，CerrodePasco，
Peru，AlcaparrosaChileなどから，鉄硫化鉱物の
分解物として見出されている(Gaineseta1.,1997)。
いずれも多様な含水鉄硫酸塩鉱物と共生しており，
鍋山産rhomboclaseも前途の産地とほぼ同じ産状，
共生鉱物を示している。Rhomboclaseは
melanteriteとほぼ同じステージのやや酸化的条件
下で生成し,ferricopiapiteはこれらの分解物として
やや後のステージで生じている。Rhomboclaseの

化学分析は行っていないが，pyrite及び
marcasite:FeS2の分解物として生成していること，
またRhomboclaseの1000℃加熱(1h)試料･が
hematiteのＸ線データとよく一致すること，格子
定数が亜ssel(1974)のＦｅ端成分組成に与えられた
格子定数とほぼ一致していることから判断して，
鍋山産lhomboclaseは理想式：HFe(SO4)2.4H20に
近い組成を持っていると推測される。
Rhomboclaseの生成反応式は①FeS2＋3.750）＋
4.5HﾌＯ→HFe(SO4)２．４H20,②FeSO4・７H２０＋
H2SO4＋0.2502→HFe(SO4)２．４H２０＋3.5H20の２
式が推定される。①はpyrite＋marcasiteの直接の
酸化加水反応物質として，②はmelanterite‐
roseniteの分解物として生じた場合の生成反応式
である。Rhomboclaseとmelanteriteは密接に共生
しているがmelanterite結晶上に,homboclaseは認
められず,rhomboclaseの多くは①の生成反応式で
生じた可能性が高い。しかしながら，一般に含水

タ(massel,1974)と良く一致している。
鍋山産rhomboclaseの格子定数はａ=9.727(5)，
b=18.32(2),c=5.428(4)Ａであり,JCPDS27-245に示
されている格子定数a=9.723,ｂ=18.295,ｃ=5.424Ａ
と良い一致を示す。
別府鍋山白土鉱床産rhomboclase
硫酸塩鉱物の生成反応，共生関係は複雑であり，
酸化的環境，脱水などにより短時間に安定な鉱物
相に変化していく。鍋山産rhomboclase生成にお
いても母材であるpyriteやmarcaSiteの分解速度(風
化の程度)、温度（気温),酸素分圧,湿度(H2０分
圧)などの様々な条件が影響を与えている。ちな
みに,rhomboclaseを見出した標本で密閉容器中に
保存していなかった標本は多量のfeITicopiapiteで
被われてしまったが，密閉容器中のrhomboclase
は未だ分解していない｡今回報告したrhomboclase
は産状からFe3+‐硫酸塩鉱物の最も早期の生成物
と推定される。

Effect of Vertical Root Restriction with Corrugated 
Plastic Sheets on Growth and Flower Bud Formation 
in Young Peach Trees

Summary
　We studied the effect of root restriction on the growth and flower bud formation of 
young peach trees. Twenty two-year-old peach trees (Prunus persica [L.] Batsch), 
cv.‘Akatsuki’grafted on wild form rootstocks were randomly selected for this experi-
ment in April 2005. The treatment planting holes were lined with different sizes of 
corrugated plastic sheets(65×90 cm, 45×65 cm, 32.5×45 cm) at a depth of 10 cm 
and replications were five. Shoot length in trees grown over full size (65×90 cm) cor-
rugated plastic sheets declined by nearly 50%. The weight of branches pruned from 
trees on full size plastic sheets reduced by 60%, those on half size plastic sheets (45×
65 cm) by 32% and those on quarter size sheets (32.5×45 cm) by 20%, as compared 
with controls. The percentage of floral buds was slightly increased by the presence of 
corrugated plastic sheets below the roots.
Introduction
　Plant roots must sense and respond to a variety of environmental stimuli as they grow through 
the soil. Touch and gravity represent two of the mechanical signals that roots must integrate to 
elicit the appropriate root growth patterns and root system architecture. Obstacles such as rocks 
will impede the general downwardly directed gravitropic growth of the root system and so these 
soil features must be sensed and this information processed for an appropriate alteration in 
gravitropic growth to allow the root to avoid the obstruction14). 
　A restricted root zone (RRZ) is often important in commercial horticulture. Under conventional 
cultivation, tillage pans or high soil bulk density restrict root penetration, hence limiting the soil 
volume available for roots to explore for water and nutrients17). Root restriction may also be 
important for growers who are producing plants in containers and those concerned with the 
establishment and maintenance of urban trees or with high density planting1, 4). Similarly, 
researchers may grow plants in confined spaces such as phytotrons or controlled environments. It

is commonly thought that any treatment that restricts root growth may affect shoot development 
via a disturbance of plant water relations. For instance, root restriction led to shoot length 
reduction in‘Fujiminori’grapevines21).
　Touch and gravity are two of the many stimuli that plants must integrate to generate an 
appropriate growth response. Due to the mechanical nature of both of these signals, shared signal 
transduction elements could well form the basis of the cross-talk between these two sensory 
systems. However, touch stimulation must elicit signaling events across the plasma membrane 
whereas gravity sensing is thought to represent transformation of an internal force, and amyloplast 
sedimentation, to signal transduction events. In addition, factors such as turgor pressure and 
presence of the cell wall may also place unique constraints on these plant mechanosensory 
systems6).
　Plants adapt their growth in response to environmental cues. Gravity is a constant force that 
guides the direction of plant growth. Mechanical stimuli such as wind, rain, and obstacles in the soil 
trigger changes in growth3, 14). Gravitropic and mechanical stimulation in the root are interactive 
processes, mutually influencing differential growth6, 14, 15).
　Plants exposed to repetitive touch or wind are generally shorter and stockier than sheltered ones. 
These mechanostimulus-induced developmental changes are termed thigmomorphogenesis and may 
confer resistance to subsequent stresses. An early response of Arabidopsis thaliana to touch or 
wind is the up-regulation of TCH (touch) gene expression. The signal transduction pathway that 
leads to mechanostimulus responses is not well defined. A role for ethylene has been proposed 
based on the observation that mechanostimulation of plants leads to ethylene evolution and 
exogenous ethylene leads to thigmomorphogenetic-like changes12).
　The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of root restriction on shoot growth 
in young peach trees.
Materials and Methods
Plant materials
　This experiment was conducted at Ehime University Experimental Farm located in southern 
Japan, 33o 57' N, 132o 47' E at an elevation of about 20 m above sea level. Twenty two-year-old 
peach (Prunus persica [L.] Batsch) trees, cv.‘Akatsuki’grafted on wild form rootstocks were used 
for this study starting from April 2005. Ten centimeter deep holes were prepared at a spacing of 3 
m x 2.5 m in a completely randomized design with five replications. The treatment holes were 
lined with hard corrugated plastic sheets (Fig. 1) at a depth of 10 cm designated as follows ：‘Quarter 
size’(32.5×45 cm),‘Half size’(45×65 cm) and‘Full size’(65×90 cm). The experimental plants 
that were raised in pots were transplanted into the lined holes. Routine cultural practices were 
carried out as required. The growth of the trees was monitored weekly by measuring the lengths 
of ten terminal shoots. 
　In February 2006, lengths of all shoots were measured while in March 2006, floral and vegetative

buds were tallied and the weight of pruned branches recorded.
Statistical analysis
　Data were analyzed statistically by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the means separated by 
Duncan's multiple range test (DMRT) at P< 0.05.
Results and Discussion
　Shoot growth and total shoot length in trees on full size corrugated plastic sheets were reduced 
by about 50% compared with control trees (Figs. 2 and 3). Shoot growth and total shoot length 
increased with decreasing plastic sheet size, and total shoot length in control trees was significantly 
higher than other treatments.
　The weight of pruned branches in the trees on full size plastic sheets was reduced by 60% 
compared with the controls (Fig. 4). Those on half size plastic sheets had a 32% reduction while 
those on quarter size were reduced by 20%. The reduction due to the presence of full and half size 
plastic sheets was significantly different compared with the control, while that due to quarter size 
sheets was not. 
　The percentage of floral buds was slightly increased by the presence of corrugated plastic sheets 
under the roots although there were no significant differences between the treatments (Fig. 5). 
Conversely, the percentage of vegetative buds was lowest in trees on full size plastic sheets and 
highest in the control.
　The quarter size plastic sheets might have allowed some roots to by-pass the sheets and be in 
direct contact with the soil hence receiving full nutrition and water resulting in enhanced shoot

length. The blockage of the roots causes stress on the roots triggering ethylene evolution leading to 
a higher number of floral buds. The blockage results in low root biomass that corresponds to a low 
shoot biomass as observed from the reduced shoot length19).
　Smaller rooting volume tended to result in a more rapid reduction of soil moisture and led to a 
smaller trunk, shorter shoot, smaller leaf area, and lower photosynthetic rate19). Root restriction 
inhibited the growth of starfruit plants as indicated by the reduction in leaf and root growth, and to 
a greater extent under water stress conditions11).
　The main consequence of the reduced root growth is a subsequent decrease in shoot growth9, 10, 
13, 20), because a restricted root system will supply insufficient water7, 16) and nutrients5, 8) to the 
shoot. As a result of root restriction, shoot growth may also be limited by insufficient carbon supply, 
because more carbon may be required by roots for increased osmotic pressure. Also, a reduction in 
the root ‶sink" as a result of root restriction can cause carbohydrates to accumulate in the leaves, 
resulting in a feedback inhibition of photosynthesis2, 18).
Conclusion
　The lining of planting holes with plastic sheets may result in higher plant densities due to 
reduced tree size. However, such an experiment needs to be carried out until the trees are in 
production to find out if such root impediment practices are also favorable for yield and fruit 
quality. The impediment of vertical extension of roots that results in their horizontal extension also 
needs to be examined in relation to tree stability especially during times of strong wind or 
typhoons.

摘要
　プラスチック波板を利用してモモの根の垂直方向への伸長を抑制した場合に、モモ幼樹の樹体生長
と花芽分化にどのような影響を与えるかを調査した。実験には２年生の野生モモ台`あかつき'を20本
利用し、2005年４月に実験を開始した。植穴の深さは約10㎝として、波板の大きさは、65×90㎝、45
×65㎝、32.5×45㎝とし、これに波板を使用しない対照区を設けた。１区５反復とした。一番面積の
大きい65×90㎝の区で、枝の伸長が対照区比べて約50％抑制された。冬季の剪定による枝の重さは、
対照区に比べて、65×90㎝区で60％、45×65㎝区で32％、32.5×45㎝区で20％の減量が見られた。花
芽形成は波板を処理することによって、やや促進される傾向が見られた。

Sumamry
　Lanolin paste containing 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% streptomycin was applied to 
the pedicles of `Muscat of Bailey A’grape bunches two weeks before anthesis. All 
bunches were dipped in aqueous solution of 100 ppm gibberelin combined with 5 ppm 
forchlorfenuron [1-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-3-phenylurea] one week after anthesis. Fruit 
set, percentage of seedless berries, seed number per berry, bunch and berry weight 
and Brix and titratable acidity of berry juice were determined. No conspicuous differ-
ences were found in fruit set or bunch and berry weight among treatments. Strepto-
mycin at 0.5 to 2.0% produced about 70% seedless berries with the seed number per 
berry about 0.4, whereas the control had 37% seedless berries and the seed number 
per berry was 1.2. Brix was higher and titratable acidity lower in the berry juice 
treated with 0.5 to 2.0% streptomycin. The seed number per berry was negatively 
and positively correlated with Brix and titratable acidity, respectively.
緒言
　ブドウの無核化技術はわが国で開発されたケミカルコントロール技術である1, 3, 5)。無核化にはジベ
レリン処理による単為結果の誘導と、それにより生じた無核果実の肥大促進を合わせて行うものであ
る。また、受精後の胚乳核の分裂を阻害する作用を持つ抗生物質‘ストレプトマイシン’を添加する
ことで無核果率を向上させる効果があることが、ブドウ‘ピオーネ’7)‘マスカット・オブ・アレキサ
ンドリア’6)‘ネオ・マスカット’6)‘マスカット・ベーリーＡ’2)柑橘類の‘土佐文旦’4)で認められている。
今回はブドウ‘マスカット・ベーリーＡ’に開花約２週間前の花梗の基部に異なる濃度のストレプト

マイシンのラノリンペーストを処理し、着果率、無核果率、収穫果実の品質等について調査をおこなっ
た。
材料および方法
　供試材料には愛媛大学農学部附属農場に植栽されている
`マスカット・ベーリーＡ’の成木樹を用いた。2005年５
月16日、展葉数が約9枚の着果枝25本を選び、一枝に一花
房残して他は摘除した。各花穂の花梗の基部にストレプト
マイシンを含んだラノリンペーストを塗付した(第１図)。
処理区としては、対照区（ラノリンのみ）、ストレプトマ
イシン濃度0.1％、0.5％、1.0％、2.0％の計５区とし、反
復数は５とした。第二回目の処理は６月６日に行い、果房
をジベレリン100ppm＋フルメット５ppmに浸漬処理した。
処理後、１週間毎に着果率を調査した。８月11日に果房を
収穫後、果房重、無核果率、一果当たりの粒数、一果粒重、
糖度、酸度を測定した。糖度はデジタル屈折糖度計で測定
をした。また、酸度は果汁１ccを0.1Ｎ NaOHで中和滴定
し、酒石酸含量に換算した。
結果および考察
⑴　着果率
　処理後の果実の着果率の経時変化を第２図に示した。処理２週目から急激に着果率が低下し、４週
目以降安定した。着果率は２週目に2.0％区でやや高い着果率を示した他は、処理区間に明瞭な差が
見られなかった。

⑵　果房重と果粒重
収穫した果房と各処理区の１果房重、１果粒重を第３、４、５図に示した。収穫した果房ではス
トレプトマイシン 0％と 0.1 区で着色していない緑色の果粒の数が多い傾向が見られた（第３図）。1
果房重では処理区間に一定の傾向は見られなかった（第４図）。１果粒重では、1.0％区がやや高い傾
向を示した（第５図）。

⑶　無核果率と１果粒当たりの種子数
　無核果率と１果粒当たりの種子数を第６図に示した。０％と0.1％区の無核果率は約35％で、両者
の間には差がなかった。0.5－2.0％では約70％の無核果率が見られ、これらの濃度間にも差がなかっ
た。いっぽう、１果粒当たりの種子数では、０％区と0.1％区は約1.2で両者の間に差はなかった。し
かし、ストレプトマシン濃度が0.5％以上になると1果粒当たりの種子数は0.4以下になった。
⑷　収穫果実の糖度、滴定酸度
　糖度は、0.5％以上の処理区で対照区、0.1％処理区より２～３度高くなった（第７図）。酸度も0.5％
以上の処理区で、対照区、0.1％処理区より約0.5％減酸された。１果粒当たりの種子数と糖度と滴定
酸度を見たのが第８図であるが、種子数が多いほど、糖度が低く、酸度が高い傾向が見られた。果実
が無核になると成熟が促進する傾向が見られるが、本研究でもそのことが確かめられた。

摘要
　ストレプトマイシン（濃度0.1％、0.5％、1.0％、2.0％）を含んだラノリンペーストを開花約２週
間前の`マスカット・ベーリーＡ'の花梗の基部に塗付し、着果率、無核果率、収穫果実の品質などに
及ぼす影響を調査した。２回目の処理は、開花１週間後に100ppmとフルメット５ppmの浸漬処理を
行った。着果率、１果房重、１果粒重には処理間に明瞭な傾向はなかった。ジベレリンストレプトマ
イシン濃度0.5－2.0％の処理区では、約70％の無核果率だったの対し、対照区は37％だった。１果粒
当たりの種子数でも、これらのストレプトマイシン処理区では0.4だったのに対し、対照区では1.2で
あった。対照区に比べて、ストレプトマイシン0.5－2.0％処理区の果汁の糖度は高く、滴定酸度は低
かった。１果粒当たりの種子数と糖度、滴定酸度の間にはそれぞれ負および正の相関関係が見られた。

-「人種開発」の言説とその日米関係への影響-

1. 「人種科学」から「人種開発」へのパラダイムシフト
人種問には確固と した生物学的 ・ 進化論的差異があ り、白人を頂点 とする人 
種の優劣はこのような差異によって決定付けられるとする 19世紀の「人種科 
学」は、20世紀に入り、人間の能力•特徴は人種ではなく環境によって形成さ 
れるとするフランツ ・ ポアズ派の文化人類学者たちによって否定された。これ 
と ともに、すべての人類は西洋を頂点とする直線的 ・ 普遍的な文明の進歩の道 
を歩んでいるという単一文明論も、世界には異なる複数の文化が存在するとい 
う文化相対主義に取って代わられた。しかしながら、このようなパラダイムシ 
フトはそれほど急速に普及したわけではない。20 世紀前半の長期にわたって 
「人種科学」に基づく 世界観は、西洋知識人の言説を支配し続けた。1910年代 
の西洋知識人は、もはや「骨相学」に代表される剥き出しの「人種科学」こそ 
援用 しなかったが、かわって「遅れた人種」の能力を「開発」してやることに 
よって平和で安定的な世界を実現するという、温情的「人種開発論」の思想を 
生み出 した【Taylor,1871; Boas, 1911; Gaines, 1993: 436； Rony, 1996: 93- 
94, 105-16, 203-204］。
この研究は、当時新興植民地主義国家として台頭していた日本が、主として 
アメリカ知識人の問で唱えられた「人種開発論」の言説にどのように組み込ま 
れ(あるいは積極的に自らを組み込み)、人種開発される側からする側へと、 
西祥知識人の意識の中で変貌を遂げて行ったかを考察する。人種開発する側 ・ 
される側という二分法は、エドワード・サイードが批判した「オリエンタリズ 
ム」における、我々(西洋人)・他者 (東洋人) という二分法的世界観に通じ 
る。 「人種開発論」への日本の介入は、西洋でもなく 東洋でもない(あるいは 
その両方の要素を兼ね備えた) 日本が西洋のオリ エンタ リ ズム言説に介入し、 
それを複雑化し、再構築する過程でもあった。このようなオリエンタリズムの 
再構築過程において、日本は「例外的オリエンタル」としての地位を獲得し、

また日本の植民地統治対象としての他のアジア太平洋地域は、人種開発される 
べき「正真正銘のオリエンタル」として再定義されて行ったというのが、未だ 
継続中である当研究のワーキングペーパー段階での仮説である。
「人種開発論」は外交 ・ 国際関係に関心を持つアメ リ カ合衆国知識人たち一 
学者だけではなく ジャーナリス ト • 政治家 ・ 宣教師らを含む一によって論じら 
れた実践的理論であった。その中心は、当時の名門私立大学であったマサチュ 
ーセッツ州クラーク大学において 1910年に創刊された The JournalofRace 
Development (『人種開発ジャーナル』、以下ジャーナルと略す。) であっ 
た。新興植民地主義国として西洋諸国から批判と賞賛の入り混じった注目を集 
めていた日本は、 「人種開発論」の分析対象となっただけではなく、人種開発 
をめぐる議論に積極的に参加することにより、自ら「人種開発論」を論じる主 
体ともなって行ったのである。本研究では、ジャーナル誌上で1910～1919年 
の 10年問に日米の学者たちが展開した議論の分析を通して、 「人種開発論」 
が 日 本やアジア太平洋地域をめぐる学問的知識の構築や国際関係に どのような 
影響を及ぼしたかを考察する。
「人種開発論」の影響は 1910 年代に留まらない。この小論で詳しく取り上 
げる余裕は無いが、ジャーナルの創設者 ・ 編集長であったクラーク大学のジョ 
- ジ・H・ ブ レーク スリ ー (George H. Blakeslee) は、後に国務省入 りし、ア 
メ リカの戦後対日占領政策立案に中心的な役割を果たすことになる ［五百旗頭、 
1985］。ブレークスリーら「知日派」が敗戦日本に対する「寛大で友好的な政 
策」 (lenient and friendly policy) を打ち出した理由は、従来の研究では彼ら 
が 1920 年代の リベラルな 日本に信頼を置いていたこ とによる と説明される傾 
向があるが、 「人種開発論」の考察を通して「知日派」の親日感情の根底には 
より複雑で古い系譜があったことが示唆される。日米の学者たちは、ジャーナ 
ルへの投稿を通して相互に影響し合いながら「日本人」 「中国人」 「朝鮮人」 
「オリエンタル」等の意味を構築して行った。こうして日米問で形成されたコ 
ンセンサスは、 その後長きにわたって日米関係および日米のアジア太平洋地域 
における外交政策に影響を及ぼして行く ことになる。
2 . The Journal ofRace Development 刊行の目的
The. Journal of Race Developmentは、クラ - ク 大学学長でア メリカ心理学 
会の会長も務めたG・スタンリー・ホール (G.StanleyHall) と、同大学の若 
手歴史学者で「国際関係論」という学問分野の成立に貢献したブレークスリー

によって創刊された。同誌は 1919年に JournalofInternationalRelations(『国 
際関係ジャーナル』) と改名され、1922年には『フォーリン・アフェアーズ』 
誌に吸収される。
創刊の目的については、ホールとプレークスリーが創刊号で詳しく説明して 
いる。冒頭ブレー クスリー は、ジャーナルが「文明の程度において遅れている 
とみなされる人種 ・ 国の進歩に関する問題を話し合う場と して刊行された」と 
端的に述べている。遅れた人種・国とは主として「インド・近東・アフリカ及 
び極東地城」、ただし「極東の中で日本は除外する。何故なら日本の文明は西 
洋諸国にかなりの程度近付いているから」である。ここで日本が「除外」され 
たにも関わらず、日本に関する 多く の論文がジャーナルに掲載されたことは次 
節で説明するが、これは西洋に「かなり の程度」近付いている ものの完全に西 
洋ではないという日本の微妙な立場に由来すると考えられる。またブレークス 
リー 論文でも うひとつ重要な点は、 「遅れた」人々 の扱い方として、ロシアの 
ような国益追求型やイギリスのような「白人の使命」型植民地支配から、アメ 
リカ流の「人種教育」重視型植民地支配 (フィリ ピン ・ モデル) への移行を提 
唱 してい る こ とである。 「遅れた人々 が効率的な政府を運営でき るよう に訓練 
されるのに必要な期間だけ支配する」という人種教育重視型植民地支配は、後 
の国際連盟による委任統治にもつながる考え方だが、この新しい 20 世紀の統 
治モデルが実は「遅れた人種」 「文明の進歩」等の極めて 19 世紀的な考えに 
支配されていたことが上記の文脈から読み取れる [Blakeslee,1910,1-4]。
一方ホールは巻頭論文において、フランツ・ボアズを引用しつつ「未開人」 
にも独自のユニークな文化があるという文化相対主義的立場を提示した上で、 
各人種の最良の部分を伸ばしつつ西洋文明をも理解させ、 「安っぽい偽 白人」 
ではなく「立派な原住民」を育てることが大切だとする [Hall,1910, 5-111。 
ホールが白人文明の衰退を危惧し、白人青年に「未開人」の野蜜さ •暴力性を 
回復させるべきであるという持論を唱えていたことは、歴史家の間で知られて 
いる [Bederman,1987,77-120]。 「今は目立たないどこかの人種が何世紀か 
後には我々 の手から落ちた松明 をかかげて全く 異なる文明を発達させているか 
も しれない」からこそ、 「高度な人種から劣った人種への」人種開発の義務が 
重要なのだと強調するホール論文からは、日本の台頭やアジア太平洋地域の重 
要性向上による白人文明至上主義への自信の揺らぎが「人種開発論」の背景に 
あったことが推察される。
ところで develop とい う語は「発展する」と自動詞的に用いる場合もあるが、

ブレークスリーとホールの論文の中での用法は、むしろ強者が弱者の能力を「開 
発してやる」という他動詞的な意味合いが強い。したがって「人種開発論」の 
考え方においては、能力開発をする側 • してもらう側という明確な線引き行わ 
れており、これはサイードのオリエンタ リ ズムにおける理性的 ・ 科学的な西洋 
と、非理性的・非科学的なオリエントとの間の線引きに対応している。その中 
で日本は、 「開発する側」と「される側」の間を移ろいながら、次第に前者と 
しての地歩を固めて行くのである。
3. 「人種開発論」における日本の位置付け
1910-1919 (季刊・計9巻36号) の掲載論文総数 (書評や「ノート」を除 
く)275本中、日本に関するもの (論文タイトルにJapan/Japaneseを含むも 
の)は46本で、全体の 16.7%に当たる。これらの中には数量的データに基づ 
く学術論文から、在日経験のあるアメ リ カ人による日本紹介まで含まれている。 
著者は研究者の他に官僚、宣教師、アメリカ上院議員、ジャーナリスト等を含 
む。 日本がこれほどアメリカ知職階級の注目を集めた背景には、 新興植民地主 
義国への関心、中国における門戸開放をめぐる日米摩擦、アジア太平洋地域に 
おけるアメ リ カの経済的 ・ 政治的パー トナーと しての重要性、そしてアメ リ カ 
における日系移民排示運動の高まり等があった。
日本関連の46本のうち、10本は日本人による寄稿論文である。それらを大 
まかに分類すると、 (1) 日本の植民地統治を説明・弁護するもの、 (2) 日 
系移民排斥運動に異論を唱える もの、 (3) 日本の近代化過程を説明あるいは 
日本の近代性を強調するもの、 (4) 日米関係に横たわる政治経済問題に解決 
方法を見出そう とする もの、に大別される。 (1) の典型的な例は新渡戸稲造 
に よる台湾統治の弁護である。新渡戸は 日 本統治以前の台湾がいかにみ じめな 
状況に置かれて いたかを説明 し、日本が台湾を文明化したこと を強調する 
[Nitobe,1912,347-361]。また(2) の例 として、当時ニューヨーク 日本クラ 
ブ会長を務めていた化学者の高峰譲吉は、日本人が常にアメ リカから何かを学 
ぼうという姿勢を持っていることを強調し、ゆえに日系移民は中国系移民と異 
なりアメ リカ社会に同化し易いと論じる [Takamine, 1912, 236-245]。
一方、アメリカ人の寄稿論文は全部で 36本ある。数が多いだけに内容も多 
種多様であるが、典型的なタイプをいくつか挙げるならば、まず日本の植民統 
治を客観的に分析する論文がある。例えば在台湾の研究者マッケイ (George W. 
MacKay)は 日 本の台湾植民地統治について、歴史的概要 ・ 財政 ・ 貿易 ・ 専売 ・

交通 ・ 教育等の項目に分けて数量的データに基づき報告した上で、物質面では 
日本の統治は一応の成功を収めているが文化的な日本化は難しいだろ う と 結論 
する。［MacKay, 1911,172-1861。
二番目に、日 本が西洋的近代国家である こ と を強調するタ イ プの論文が挙げ 
られる。例えば、メンデンホール(Thomas C. Mendenhall) は1881年から数 
年にわたって東京帝大の教授を務めて以来 30 年ぶりに再訪した日本が、西洋 
的近代国家と して生まれ変わった様子を紹介している。都市部の衣食住が西洋 
的であり、と りわけベー トーベンやヘンデルなどの西洋音楽が愛され受容され 
ていることや、日本人が親米的であることを好意的に紹介する。［Mendenhall, 
1912, 224-235］。
三番目に、進化論・優生学等の立場から日本人の人種的特質 (特に他の「オ 
リェンタル」と異なる優秀性)を説明する論文も多数見受けられる。例えば著 
名な経済社会学者ヴェブレン (ThorsteinVeblen)は、日本人は西洋人と似た 
知的 ・心理的傾向を持っているので、外面的に西洋の科学技術を吸収するにつ 
れ内面的にも西洋化して行くはずだと論じる。この点日本人は、いくら外面的 
に西洋の技術に触れても西洋的な論理性 ・ 効率性を身につけなかった「ニグロ 
やポリネシアン、イースト •インディアン等 と 対照的」だ と彼は言 う。［Veblen, 
1915,23-38］。
一方、日本の植民地政策を批判し、中国を擁護する立場の論文も散見される。 
例えば上海の中国国際研究所に勤めるライド(Gilbert Reid) は、 「日本はモ 
ンロー・ ドクトリンを悪用することによって中国を危険に陥れている」 と批判 
し、アメリカ合衆国は対中国政策において「日本が勝手に曲解したモンロード 
クトリ ンに縛られる必要は無い」と結論する。［Reid, 1916, 12-22］。
以上のようなジャーナルの内容から、「人種開発論」の文脈における 日本の 
位置付けについて現段階で読み取れる点を 3 つほど挙げる こ と によ って結びに 
代えたい。一つ目は、日本は西洋的近代国家であり、日本人は典型的オリエン 
タルとは一線を画すのだとする主張が日米双方から呼応するように出され、し 
かも ヴェブレンをはじめとする有力な研究者がそのよ う な主張に学間的裏付け 
を与えていた点である。二番目 に、そのような 日本人の「例外化」の陰には、 
コインの表裏のように「日本人と異質な中国人・朝鮮人」という言脱が存在し 
ていた点である。これらの二点を考え併せると、アメリカ人が従来持っていた 
オリエンタルへのまなざしを、新渡戸論文に見られるような日本からアジアへ

のまなざしに同化して行く過程があったのではないかと推察される。三番目に、 
マッケイ論文 ・ ライ ド論文のように日本の植民地統治を客観的に批判する論文 
も少数ながら存在したことは、「人種開発論」が必ずしも親日論に終始してはい 
なかったことを物語っている。いずれにしても 1910年代のアメ リカにおいて、 
日米の学者が学術誌に これだけま と まった分量の 日 本関連の論考を掲載する こ 
とは例外的であり、これらの知見は太平洋の両岸における学問的言説の構築に 
大いに寄与したと考えられる。このことが日米関係および日米の太平洋地域で 
の外交政策にどのような影響を与えたのか、今後の課題と してさらに研究を進 
めたい。
