Technology versus skill as a competitive advantage in retail — A case study of eyewear retailers —
This study explores the inherent competitive advantages of small and medium-sized retailers. Considering the eyewear industry in Japan as a case study, this study conducted two short case studies of a large-scale eyewear chain store and an independent eyewear store, after confirming the current state of the eyewear retail market. After analyzing both case studies, it became clear that while large-scale eyewear chain stores are expanding their business by making use of “retail technology,” independent eyewear stores are developing their business with “retail skills” as a competitive advantage, which can be said to be the craftsmanship of eyewear merchants. Retail skills, such as the craftsmanship of merchants, are theoretically suggestive of a new perspective on the existence of small and medium-sized retailers and retail competition theory.departmental bulletin pape
Toward a carbon neutral urban transportation system in Japan
At COP26, in November 2021, more than 150 countries declared their commitment to carbon neutrality. A decarbonized society has become a common goal in many countries. The Japanese government has declared that it aims to achieve a decarbonized society by 2050. Urban transportation also requires significant reductions in CO2 emissions, but there is a risk that carbon neutrality cannot be achieved solely through decarbonizing technologies for transportation vehicles and energy sources; therefore, cooperation with cities and society is necessary. This paper discusses the possibility of achieving carbon neutrality in urban transportation in Japan by reviewing 1) the status of vehicle and fuel decarbonization technologies, 2) the possibility of reducing CO2 emissions through land use policies, and 3) the effects of information communication technologies on transportation behavior based on the literature.journal articl
Effect of limb alignment correction on medial meniscus extrusion under loading condition in high tibial osteotomy
Background: This study aimed to investigate the effect of high tibial osteotomy (HTO) on medial meniscus extrusion (MME) and the association between the changes in limb alignment and MME under weight-bearing (WB) conditions after HTO.Methods: We included 17 patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) who underwent HTO. MME was evaluated using ultrasonography in supine and unipedal standing positions. Knee alignment was evaluated radiographically using WB, whole-leg radiographs with the hip-knee-ankle angle (HKAA), percentage of the mechanical axis (%MA), medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), and joint line convergence angle (JLCA). All measurements were performed serially at four time points: preoperative and 3, 6, and 12 months postoperative. Clinical outcomes were assessed by knee injury and osteoarthrosis outcome score (KOOS) and visual analogue scale (VAS) value for pain. Results: Mean MME in the WB position was significantly greater than that in the supine position in the preoperative condition; however, MME in both supine and WB positions was significantly lowered postoperatively. The ΔMME, difference of MME between supine and WB positions, was significantly lowered postoperatively and maintained for up to 1 year. MME change in the WB position between preop and postoperative conditions was significantly correlated with change in HKAA and %MA at 1 year postoperative. KOOS and VAS score were significantly improved after HTO.Conclusions: HTO correcting varus alignment can decrease MME in WB position and minimise the change in MME between supine and WB positions. The changes in MME after HTO were correlated with changes in the mechanical alignments.journal articl
Quantitative effects of bilirubin structural photoisomers on the measurement of direct bilirubin via the vanadate oxidation method
香川大学Kagawa University博士(医学)Background: Exposing blood serum samples to ambient white light-emitting diode (WLED) light may accelerate bilirubin photoisomer production. We previously demonstrated the quantitative effect of bilirubin configurational isomers (BCI) on direct bilirubin (DB) value using the vanadate oxidation method. However, the effects of bilirubin structural photoisomers (BSI) remain unclear. Methods: In Study 1, the relationship between WLED irradiation time and BSI production was examined. Serum samples from five neonates were irradiated with WLED light for 0, 10, 30, 60 and 180 min. Bilirubin isomer concentration and BSI production rates were calculated. In Study 2, we performed quantitative investigation of BSI effect on DB values: Differences in DB, BCI and BSI values before and after irradiation were calculated as ⊿DB, ⊿BCI and ⊿BSI, respectively. Assuming the coefficient of BCI affecting DB values was 'a', relational expression was ⊿DB = a*⊿BSI + 0.19*⊿BCI. Serum samples from 15 neonates were irradiated with green LED light for 10 and 30 s. The respective bilirubin isomer levels were measured, and the coefficient was derived. Results: In Study 1, the median BSI production rate was 0.022 mg/dL per min in specimens with an unconjugated bilirubin concentration of 10.88 mg/dL. In Study 2, assuming that ⊿DB-0.19*⊿BCI was Y and ⊿BSI was X, the relational expression was Y = 0.34X-0.03 (R2 = 0.87; p < .01) and a = 0.34.Conclusions: Under ambient WLED light, serum sample generated 1.3 mg/dL BSIs in 1 h. Approximately 34% (0.44 mg/dL) of BSI concentrations was measured as DB when using the vanadate oxidation method according to the above equation.doctoral thesi
Perpendicular implantation of porcine trachea extracellular matrix for enhanced xenogeneic scaffold surface epithelialization in a canine model
香川大学Kagawa University博士(医学)Objective: The availability of clinically applied medical materials in thoracic surgery remains insufficient, especially materials for treating tracheal defects. Herein, the potential of porcine extracellular matrix (P-ECM) as a new airway reconstruction material was explored by xenotransplanting it into a canine trachea. Methods: P-ECM was first transplanted into the buttocks of Narc Beagle dogs (n = 3) and its overall immuno-induced effects were evaluated. Subsequently, nine dogs underwent surgery to create a tracheal defect that was 1 × 2 cm. In group A, the P-ECM was implanted parallel to the tracheal axis (n = 3), whereas in group B the P-ECM was implanted perpendicular to the tracheal axis (n = 6). The grafts were periodically observed by bronchoscopy and evaluated postoperatively at 1 and 3 months through macroscopic and microscopic examinations. Immunosuppressants were not administered. Statistical evaluation was performed for Bronchoscopic stenosis rate, graft epithelialization rate, shrinkage rate and ECM live-implantation rate. Results: No sign of P-ECM rejection was observed after its implantation in the buttocks. Bronchoscopic findings showed no improvement concerning stenosis in group A until 3 months after surgery; epithelialization of the graft site was not evident, and the ECM site appeared scarred and faded. In contrast, stenosis gradually improved in group B, with continuous epithelium within the host tissues and P-ECM. Histologically, the graft site contracted longitudinally and no epithelialization was observed in group A, whereas full epithelialization was observed on the P-ECM in group B. No sign of cartilage regeneration was confirmed in both groups. No statistically significant differences were found in bronchoscopic stenosis rate, shrinkage rate and ECM live-implantation rate, but graft epithelialization rate showed a statistically significant difference (G-A; sporadic (25%) 3, vs. G-B; full covered (100%) 3; p = 0.047).Conclusions: P-ECM can support full re-epithelialization without chondrocyte regeneration, with perpendicular implantation facilitating epithelialization of the ECM. Our results showed that our decellularized tracheal matrix holds clinical potential as a biological xenogeneic material for airway defect repair.doctoral thesi
