Taiwan-Japan Comparison of ‘Play’ as a Quality Indicator in Early Childhood Education and Care
This project aims to explore the common issues of quality indicators in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) across the differences in social and cultural beliefs, values, and traditions between Taiwan and Japan. One question worthy of ongoing research is what issues regarding play are recognised through ECEC practices in both countries. This study attempted to clarify this issue through the literature review. It would expand our understanding of improving the quality of ECEC practices and contribute to a debate about the best ways to support young children’s personal, social, and emotional development. The quality of ECEC affects children’s
development of non-cognitive skills. Therefore, exploring the way to assess process quality in ECEC can enhance the SDG’s action in Goal 4; to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.departmental bulletin pape
Higher Indocyanine Green Retention Is Associated with Improved Prognosis in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treated with Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization
Purpose
To test indocyanine green retention rate at 15 minutes (ICG-R15) as a prognostic biomarker in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) therapy.Materials and Methods
This retrospective cohort study was performed on the data of 278 consecutive patients with HCC treated with TACE after ICG-R15 testing at a single university hospital. Cox proportional hazard model analysis was performed to identify independent prognostic factors. After adjusting for age, sex, stage of HCC, albumin–bilirubin score, etiologies, and baseline year by propensity score matching, the prognostic impact of higher ICG-R15 was evaluated using the Kaplan–Meier curve. Results
Univariate and multivariate analyses identified higher ICG-R15 as a positive prognostic factor for overall survival. Propensity score matching generated two 77-patient cohorts: ICG-R15 20% group. The overall survival of the ICG-R15 >20% group was significantly better than that of the ICG-R15 <20% group. Conclusions
Higher ICG-R15 acted as a positive long-term prognostic factor in patients with HCC treated with TACE.journal articl
Relationship between multi-pool model-based chemical exchange saturation transfer imaging, intravoxel incoherent motion MRI, and 11C-methionine uptake on PET/CT in patients with gliomas
Purpose
Magnetization transfer ratio asymmetry (MTRasym) analysis is used for chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) in patients with gliomas; however, this approach has limitations. CEST imaging using a multi-pool model (MPM) may allow a more detailed assessment of gliomas; however, its mechanism remains unknown. This study aimed to assess the relationship between CEST imaging by MPM, intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM), and 11C-methionine (11C-MET) uptake on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) to clarify the clinical significance of CEST imaging using MPM in gliomas. Methods
This retrospective study included 17 patients with gliomas who underwent 11C-MET PET/CT at our institution between January 2020 and January 2022. Two-dimensional axial CEST imaging was conducted using single-shot fast-spin echo acquisition at 3 T. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), true diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*), f, MTRasym (3.5 ppm), parameters of MPM-based CEST imaging, and tumor-to-contralateral normal brain tissue (T/N) ratio were calculated using a region-of-interest analysis. Shapiro–Wilk test, weighted kappa coefficient, and Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were used for statistical analysis. Results
Significant correlations were found between APT_T1 and T/N ratio (ρ = 0.87, p < 0.001), APT_T2 and T/N ratio (ρ = 0.47, p < 0.05), MTRasym and T/N ratio (ρ = 0.55, p < 0.01), and T2/T1 and T/N ratio (ρ = −0.36, p < 0.05). Furthermore, significant correlations were observed between APT_T1 and ADC (ρ = −0.67, p < 0.001), APT_T1 and D (ρ = −0.70, p < 0.001), APT_T2 and D* (ρ = −0.45, p < 0.05), and T2/T1 and D (ρ = 0.39, p < 0.05).Conclusion
These preliminary findings indicate that MPM-based CEST imaging parameters correlate with IVIM and 11C-MET uptake on PET/CT in patients with gliomas. In particular, the new parameter APT_T1 correlated more strongly with 11C-MET uptake compared to the traditional CEST parameter MTRasym.journal articl
Cabozantinib inhibits the growth of lenvatinib-resistant hepatoma cells restoring FTCD expression
Cabozantinib is a newly developed tyrosine kinase inhibitor, which is applied on patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) unresponsive to conventional tyrosine kinase inhibitors, including lenvatinib. However, the mechanism of cabozantinib efficacy for lenvatinib-resistant tumor cells has not been well established in basic studies. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the mechanisms by which cabozantinib inhibits tumor growth of lenvatinib-resistant hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines in vitro and in vivo. We established a lenvatinib-resistant Hep3B cell line (Hep3B-LR) and evaluated the inhibitory effect of cabozantinib on the growth of Hep3B-LR cells. Hep3B-LR exhibited approximately 20 times greater IC50 for lenvatinib than the wild type. Compared with wild-type Hep3B, Hep3B-LR was characterized by enhanced expression of EGFR, MET and ErbB2. Cabozantinib suppressed tumor growth of Hep3B-LR in vitro and in vivo. Microarray analysis and real-time qPCR using the xenografts revealed cabozantinib downregulated miR-126-3p, a tumor suppressor miRNA, suggesting that miR-126-3p did not contribute to tumor inhibitory effect of cabozantinib. Proteome analysis using xenograft tissues demonstrated an upregulation of FTCD, a tumor suppressor gene, by cabozantinib administration. The enhanced expression of FTCD by cabozantinib was confirmed by western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis. Furthermore, FTCD expression in Hep3B-LR before cabozantinib administration was weaker than that in wild-type Hep3B. FTCD expression was weakened along with acquisition of lenvatinib-resistance, and was restored by cabozantinib administration. FTCD may be a novel therapeutic target of cabozantinib in case of lenvatinib treatment failure.journal articl
History of the international exchange program with Chiang Mai University: achievements and prospects
departmental bulletin pape
Conflict opinions on the knowing the Japanese vernacular names of species, etc. between two Japanese zoologists of Naohide Yatsu and Tamiji Kawamura around 1920’s and 1930’s
In 1920, and 1932a,b, respectively,Professors Naohide Yatsu, Tokyo Imperial University, and Tamiji Kawamura, Kyoto Imperial University, discussed on whether or not knowing of the Japanese vernacular names of biological species, etc. is necessary in the early elementary education. Prof.Yatsu insisted on that knowing the name of plants or animals is not absolutely need for biological studies but it is no more than one method. Furthermore, he emphasized that beginners who want to know the name should ask professional researchers about it to get exact identification, because the identification is very difficult for them. On the contrary, opposing Yatsu’s opinion, Prof. Kawamura asserted that knowing the names is the first step to access friendly to these plants and animals living around our daily life, so that beginners would come to have an interest in plants and animals. If beginners ask these names for researchers every time according to Yatsu’s opinion, I suppose that beginners would feel troublesome and would give up to know these names after this. These conflict opinions would be brought about the difference of how to think of science between Yatsu and Kawamura.journal articl

A new labdane-type diterpenoid from leaves of Vitex rotundifolia
Vitex rotundifolia is a folk medicinal plant that has been used to treat various diseases. We have previously found that the extract of its leaves shows cytotoxic and epithelial mesenchymal transition inhibitory effect in HHUA endometrial cells. In this study, a new labdane-type diterpenoid 1 was isolated and its structure was elucidated by NMR and CD spectroscopic analysis followed by density functional theory calculations. Compound 1 showed cytotoxicity toward HHUA cells with an IC50 value of 6.4 μM, but did not inhibit phorbol ester-induced epithelial mesenchymal transition nor lipopolysaccharide-stimulated nitric oxide production.journal articl
