PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE TEACHER DEVELOPMENT: THE IMPACT OF ONLINE LESSON STUDIES ON REFLECTIVE PRACTICES
Reflective practice is essential in teacher education, enabling pre-service teachers to engage in meaningful professional development and continuously improve their teaching skills. However, barriers such as time constraints, geographic isolation, and crises like COVID-19 often hinder consistent engagement in reflective practices. This study developed and evaluated an online lesson study platform within a university-based teacher education program to address these challenges and support pre-service teachers’ professional growth. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzed reflective engagement among 115 pre-service teachers in the Faculty of Education through reflection reports and surveys. The theoretical framework, based on Darling-Hammond’s reflective perspective, focused on student learning processes, teaching effectiveness, classroom atmosphere, personal educational philosophy, and continuous growth through reflective dialogue. Qualitative analysis revealed varying levels of engagement in reflective practices, with significant improvements in reflections on teaching methods and student learning. However, challenges remained in reflecting on students’ cognitive processes. Quantitative analysis using the McNemar test confirmed statistically significant increases in reflective practice engagement. These findings suggested that online lesson study platforms can provide accessible and practical opportunities for pre-service teacher professional development, overcoming barriers related to location and logistics and supporting global educational goals, particularly Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities).journal articl
Functional regulation of the protein phosphatase PPM1M by phosphorylation at multiple sites with Ser/Thr-Pro motifs
Abstract
The imbalance in the phosphorylation and the dephosphorylation of proteins leads to various diseases. Therefore, in vivo, the functions of protein kinases and protein phosphatases are strictly regulated. Mg2+/Mn2+-dependent protein phosphatase PPM1M has been implicated in immunity and cancer; however, the regulation mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we show that PPM1M is regulated in different ways by multiple phosphorylation. PPM1M has four Ser/Thr-Pro motifs (Ser27, Ser43, Ser60, and Thr254) that are recognized by proline-directed kinases, and Ser60 was found to be phosphorylated by cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) in the cell. The phospho-mimetic mutation of Ser27 and Ser43 in the N-terminal domain suppresses the nuclear localization of PPM1M and promotes its accumulation in the cytoplasm. The phospho-mimetic mutation of Ser60 decreases PPM1M activity; conversely, the phospho-mimetic mutation of Thr254 increases PPM1M activity. These results suggest that the subcellular localization and phosphatase activity of PPM1M are regulated by protein kinases, including CDK5, via phosphorylation at multiple sites. Report on the Kagawa University JICA 2023 Nikkei Training Project
Here we report on the the Kagawa University JICA 2023 Nikkei Training Project. The collaborative effort between the Faculty of Agriculture and the International Office at Kagawa University culminated in the successful conclusion of the this training project. The program was hosted across various venues, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Yokohama Center, the Faculty of Agriculture at Kagawa University, the International Office at Kagawa University and some on-site locations. The immersive training took place over four weeks, from October 6 to October 26, 2023, fostering a dynamic learning environment for all participants.The program was funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) who also provided pre-training at the JICA Yokohama Center. The program admininstered by the Faculty of Agriculture and the International Office. Eight entrepreneurs of Japanese descent from Bolivia, Brazil and Mexico were invited to participate in the program. These participants, eager to develop new food businesses in their home countries, were seeking expansion and reorganization opportunities.This report provides a comprehensive overview of the program, including its planning and objectives, along with the evaluation and feedback received from the attendees, organizers, and JICA.departmental bulletin pape

(Pro)renin receptor down-regulation is associated with a higher risk of recurrence in lung adenocarcinoma
香川大学Kagawa University博士(医学)Background/aim: The (pro)renin receptor [(P)RR] plays a role not only in cardiovascular and renal diseases, but also in tumorigenesis. (P)RR contributes to the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, independent of the renin-angiotensin system. Accumulating evidence has shown that (P)RR is expressed in various human cancers. However, its clinical impact in lung carcinomas remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the associations between (P)RR expression and clinical outcomes in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC).Patients and methods: We analyzed the data of 913 patients with NSCLC who underwent resection between 1999 and 2016. Tissue microarrays were constructed and the expression of (P)RR and β-catenin was investigated using immunohistochemistry. Recurrence-free probability and overall survival were analyzed using a log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards model.Results: In adenocarcinomas, (P)RR down-regulation correlated significantly with high-grade tumors (p=0.026) and a higher risk of recurrence in all patients (p=0.001). Among patients with (P)RR-positive tumors, the nuclear expression of β-catenin was associated with a higher risk of recurrence (p=0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that (P)RR down-regulation was an independent predictor of disease recurrence (p=0.031). Conversely, in squamous cell carcinoma, (P)RR was not associated with patient outcomes.Conclusion: (P)RR down-regulation is associated with a higher risk of recurrence in lung adenocarcinomas, thereby characterizing a prognostic subset within high-grade tumors.doctoral thesi
