Measuring Ability in Foreign Language Word Recognition: A Novel Test and An Alternative to Segalowitz's "CV-rt" Fluency Index
application/pdfJournal ArticleTests of word-recognition speed (lexical accessibility) for second language learners have become more common in recent years as its importance in lexical processing has become apparent. However, the very short reaction-time latencies mean they are often complicated to handle or set up in school-based testing situations. They may also produce data that is hard to interpret or which lacks construct validity. Our solution to this problem is a quick-and-easy test called Q_Lex which can be used by anyone with a PC. Each item is embedded in a string of letters and this slows down recognition time to a degree that PCs can reliably measure. Native-speaker responses are used as a baseline and learners' skill is judged against this. In this way, Q_Lex produces a score rather than a response time result. One drawback of this system is that it doesn't produce data suitable for calculating Segalowitz's co-efficient of variation (CV-rt) measure which can reveal the cognitive streamlining indicative of fluent lexical performance. Consequently, an alternative method of calculating CV-rt from Q_Lex data is found to reflect the qualitative restructuring expected in learners across a range of proficiency levels. This is significant because it demonstrates the practical application of this psycholinguistic phenomenon for vocabulary assessment in second-language learning.journal articl

On the Time of Shuo-wen Zhouwen : Analyzing the Inscription of Ma-Ding
application/pdfJournal ArticleShuo-wen jie-zi 説文解字, compiled by Xu-Shen 許愼 in A.D.100, is one of the immortal masterpieces of scholarship of ancient China. "Zhou-wen"籀文 characters and "Gu-wen"古文 characters which were preserved in Shou-wen jie-zi 説文解字 are quite important materials to survey of Chinese characters' archaic forms. Shi-zhou 史籀 is regarded as the compiler of Shi-zhou-pian 史籀篇 from which "Zhou-wen" 籀文 characters were derived and his name written as 史留 appears in the inscription on the Ma-Ding [マ]鼎, a newly unearthed Western Zhou bronze. This article analyzed Ma-Ding [マ]鼎 with special emphasis on the function of 史留 in the Western Zhou Royal Court. Examining this bronze inscription of the last years of Western Zhou, it proves that Shi-Zhou 史籀 actually existed as a technocrat during the time of Xuan-Wang 宣王 and that the orthography of bronze inscriptions was established by those bureaucrats through this era.journal articl

Oral pain by denture influences on dietary intake in elderly people
application/pdfJournal ArticleHere we investigated the influence of oral pain due to dentures on the food intake of elderly people. The average annual food intake of groups with or without pain was compared. Intake of soybeans, meat and confectionery was significantly higher in the group with pain. Changes in food intake from age 73 (2001) to 74 (2002) were studied. In the group with pain, fruit consumption significantly decreased, but alcohol, mayonnaise, and dressing intake significantly increased ; average intake of vegetables was lower and fruit consumption decreased over time in the pain group. This implies that painful dentures affect vthe intake of vitamins, minerals and dietary fivers. As painful dentures not only limit food choice but decrease food intake, uncontrolled pain may be a factor leading to poor nutrition, and be hazardous to life in the long run. Improvements in pain control and selection of foods that do not cause pain are needed to improve nutrition of elderly persons with dentures. Less painful dentures might improve QOL and protect the nation's health. We recommend further study of denture users, with and without pain, and by gender.journal articl
