The Development of “GATEWAY: Encyclopedia for Inquiry”, Inquiry-Based Learning Materials Using ICT

In Japanese high schools, “Period for Inquiry-Based Cross-Disciplinary Study” has been made compulsory since the 2022 fiscal year. Exploratory learning is described as “the progressive repetition of problem-solving activities” and “a series of intellectual efforts to explore and identify the essence of things concerning the self.” While Inquiry-Based Learning is implemented in each high school, “support for setting themes,” “utilization of local educational resources,” and “utilization of ICT” are regarded as issues.
Against the background of the above-mentioned three issues of concern, Owner Inc. developed “GATEWAY: Encyclopedia for Inquiry.” GATEWAY offers online teaching material that is accessed by individuals using tablets and other devices. One of GATEWAY’s characteristics is that it publishes articles from various inquirers who are active in local communities. This article aims to provide high school students with an opportunity to recognize and explore their interests by exposing them to the lifestyles of various local inquirers. The development of this teaching materials was not completed within a single company but was a collaborative effort with high schools and universities.
Furthermore, the concept of “human-centered design” was emphasized in the development of the gateway. We asked high school students to use the service’s pilot version and used the feedback to improve it. A questionnaire survey conducted among high school students in July 2022 and a subsequent survey showed that 88.4% of the respondents responded positively to the service. An Exploratory Study of the Differences in the Perceptions of Organizational Culture by Talent Type
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to investigate, in an explorative attempt, the differences in the perception of organizational culture among employees in the sciences and humanities. To this end, we conduct a questionnaire survey among 160 employees in the sciences and 160 in the humanities, who work for a major manufacturing company in Japan, in regard to their perceptions of organizational culture in their departments.
The result indicates: Firstly, it is suggested that employees in the sciences sector have a high awareness of the "safety-based challenge culture" outside the company and tend to be strongly aware of the impact of their products outside of the company. Secondly, it is suggested that employees in humanities sector have a high awareness of the "safety culture" and "challenge culture" within the company, and tend to pay close attention to human relationship within the company. Thirdly, both employees in the sciences and humanities have a high awareness of the "adjustment culture" and tend to prefer a relatively stable work environment.departmental bulletin pape
Returning to study abroad in the COVID- 19 era: Report on a short-term study abroad program in 2022
Get PDFAs the world continues to adjust to the COVID-19 pandemic, Japanese universities and students have begun deliberating about restarting their short-term study abroad programs. The current article reports on a study abroad program which was held during August and September 2022. Program participants included five students enrolled at a small public university in northern Japan, who joined a 1-month study abroad program held at a major public university located in the eastern United States. The focus of the study abroad program was to improve the participants’ English linguistic abilities, as well as introduce aspects of American culture and society in an effort to foster greater cross-cultural understanding. As a measure of linguistic ability, the five program participants took part in a TOEIC Speaking Test prior to their departure and after returning to Japan in a pre-test post-test manner. T-test results showed statistically significant gains in the participants’ English speaking abilities over the 1-month study abroad program. Qualitative data was also collected to gauge how Japanese study abroad participants perceived the prospects of studying abroad during the current COVID-19 era. The applicability of the Care Evaluation Scale (CES) in the pediatric field Literature review of the structure and process of end-of-life care for children and their families
Get PDFThis study conducted a literature review to examine the applicability of the Care Evaluation Scale (CES), a scale for evaluating the structure and process of end-of-life care, which was developed and used in the adult field, in the pediatric field. After searching for papers associated with end-of-life care for children and their families on Ichushi-Web, 946 out of 1884 references were extracted, excluding duplicates, and 27 papers that ultimately fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included in the analysis. In the analysis results, content related to playing and learning care, sibling care, and family support were extracted as items that should be added to the CES. Moreover, no content related to “Cost” and “Availability” was extracted in the literature review. However, given the known economic burden of children’s illnesses and the fact that the number of children spending their terminal phase at home is increasing owing to the spread of pediatric home care, it is necessary to make careful judgement regarding the deletion of these items when using the CES in the pediatric field.departmental bulletin pape

Digital Transformation Efforts in Nursing Education at Miyagi University: Development and Trial of a Virtual Area as an Alternative Learning Pla
Get PDFMiyagi University in Japan faces several educational challenges, such as deviations and limitations in the practice environment, inadequate magination in students due to limited practical experience, and lack of creativity in nursing practices that focus on the community.
Therefore, this research aimed to develop and test a third place of learning named as "MYUTOWN," which can complement on-campus lasses and clinical training.
This educational environment is a virtual area consisting of town maps, videos, and electronic medical records and can be used alone or in conjunction with existing high-performance simulators. A trial, comprising five study participants, was conducted for 1st to 3rd year nursing students wherein 90% of the students responded positively about the degree of learning goal achievement, improvement in imagination skills, and usefulness in understanding the target audience. In addition, teachers’ evaluation indicated that it was fairly effective in promoting learning. However, 60% of the students were unsure regarding operability, partly due to the fact that many students watched images being projected on the screen without operating the device themselves. The key feature of this educational environment is that students can operate it independently and study actively, but the learning effects cannot be verified in a few cases owing to the teacher's mode of operation. Therefore, the need to disseminate knowledge of effective usage methods among teachers as well as to develop education and support systems for information and communications technology literacy were identified as issues.
Study findings suggest that MYU-TOWN can have an educational effect that contributes to the achievement of learning goals and that it is a teaching material, which can function as an additional place of learning that mutually complements on-campus classes.

Accessibility to Subway Stations by Public Transportation in Izumi Ward, Sendai City
Get PDFThis study evaluated the accessibility for residents of Izumi Ward, Sendai City to a subway station by public transportation using the mesh population data. By calculating the minimum time to reach the subway station for each residential area based on travel time including walking, waiting, and riding time, the characteristics of the accessibility in this region were quantified and visualized. 1.5% of the total population residing in Izumi Ward has no access to buses and subways. 61.8% and 27.6% of the population live in areas that take more than 30 and 45 min, respectively, to reach a subway station. When the evaluation was limited to seniors aged 65 and older, it was observed that 70.0% live in areas that take more than 30 min to a subway station, corresponding to a percentage about 8 % higher than that for the total population. Additionally, approximately 12% of the total population of Izumi Ward had a subway station in the Sendai metropolitan area, not in Izumi Ward, as their nearest station in time. Are Part-time Jobs for College Students Useful for Job Hunting?
Get PDFFor university students, job hunting is an opportunity to experience "self- selection and selfdetermination", which are important for career development, and requires self-awareness and understanding of the social environment. Through part-time jobs, university students are expected to broaden their perspectives and promote their understanding of the social environment by exposing them to the real world.
We investigated that university students gain through part-time jobs experience, and which processes and aspects are useful in their job hunting activities, based on university-style resumes and a graduate questionnaire.
From specific examples of "self-promotion" and "things I worked hard on as a student" in the university-style resumes, it turned out that college students often learned through part-time jobs. And it can also be inferred that they deepened interpersonal and job skills.
From the graduate questionnaire, it was clear that part-time jobs were useful for job hunting. In particular, it is used as a concrete example of entry sheet creation and interviews. It can also be inferred that part-time jobs helped them acquire interpersonal skills through more frequent contact with members of society, which was useful in their job hunting activities.
In order to confirm that part-time jobs are useful for job hunting, it is necessary to also interview companies, and we would like to undertake a survey.
In addition, according to previous research, the sense of purpose of part-time jobs has an impact on the setting of job-hunting goals. In the future, I would like to verify whether there is a change in the purpose and willingness to work by communicating the positive aspects of part-time jobs clarified in this paper to students in advance.departmental bulletin pape
