The conflictless coexistence of harmony and destruction Human-Nature Connectedness in Japan
Human-induced climate change (HICC) and biodiversity loss (HIBL) pose major threats to human beings and societies. We should change our values and behaviors in a more environmentally friendly direction (through pro-environmental behaviors: PEBs). Philosophers, environmentalists, and psychologists all agree that a sense of connection to
nature (human-nature connectedness: HNC) most effectively encourages PEBs.
This paper reviews research on HNC, which has rapidly increased in recent years in response to the threats posed by HICC and HIBL, and describes how nature is perceived in Japan, where HNC research has not advanced, and the relationship between Japanese people and nature, clarifying the significance of future HNC research and more effective means of promoting PEBs in Japan.
The results indicate that the exploitation of nature since the Meiji period, which has entailed environmental destruction, may have been carried out despite their continued sense of oneness with nature. This indicates that a new strategy to recover HNC is needed to promote PEBs in Japan, where a new approach is also needed to understand the relationship between human beings and nature, where a sense of oneness with nature and an exploitation of nature can coexist without psychological conflict.departmental bulletin pape
Exploring the expression of "food" in picture books through text mining
Picture books are typical resources used in dietary education for children, and their
effectiveness has many possibilities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the "words" used in picture books depicting "food" using text mining. KH Coder 3. was used for text mining, and three types of analysis were conducted: the frequency list of words, hierarchical cluster analysis, and co-occurrence network. The results showed that in addition to basic words such as "say" and "eat," some words that remind us of home, such as "mother," "father" and "house," were used frequently. In addition, it was found that picture books depicted scenes in which the characters "eat" and "make" together with other characters, and "eat" "delicious" food with an awareness of "taste" and "smell," which is expected to contribute to the natural development of a rich image of "food" among children.departmental bulletin pape
Literature Review on the Disaster Support Nurses Face in Their Dispatch Activities
This study aims to identify the difficulties faced by disaster support nurses dispatched to
disaster-stricken areas during dispatch activities. Ichushi-Web (version 5) and CiNii were searched using the keyword "disaster support nurses" for articles published in Japan from
1995 to2 023. Additionally, the websites of the Japanese Nursing Association and prefectural nursing associations were searched for reports on disaster support nurses' activities.
Subsequently, 51 articles and reports were selected for analysis. Regarding difficulties faced by these nurses during their activities, 12 categories were extracted. The items before dispatch were as follows: "Preparation of supplies and mental preparedness with limited time and informations," and "Inadequate understanding of their dispatch on the part of their institution and family members." Items during the activities were: "Roles that were not clearly defined and activities that they had not expected," "Autonomous nursing practices with limited duration and resources," "Reconciling autonomous work with the requirements in the field," "Understanding the roles and collaboration of multiple professions," "Taking care of yourself mentally and physically while working in a harsh environment," "Reducing the workload of local nursing staff," "Engaging with survivors, " and "Providing nursing care to meet the changing needs of disaster survivors." Items after returning home were: "Reflecting and evaluating one's own dispatch activities," and "Caring for their own body and mind after
returning home." Disaster support nurses engage perform activities in disaster areas after
receiving dispatch requests and continue to experience difficulties even after returning home
Nurses must strive to improve their practical nursing skills to reduce physical and mental hardship experienced during relief activities. They must also improve their self-care skills to
prevent the deterioration of their mental and physical condition.departmental bulletin pape
A Survey of Digital Community Currencies in Japan: A Quantitative Text Analysis Using a Database of Newspaper Articles
The purpose of this study is to examine the current state of digital community currencies through a quantitative text analysis of newspaper articles. By analyzing the content of newspaper articles, we aim to visualize the differences and characteristics of community currencies across various periods. Unlike previous studies that mainly focused on case studies, this research analyzes the historical transition and development in Japan based on objective data. We analyzed the relationships between frequently appearing words, connections between different words, and associations between words and time periods. Our findings show that the historical transitions and characteristics of digital community currencies are generally consistent with the content of newspaper articles. This study organizes fundamental data for further detailed examination and contributes to understanding the role of digital community currencies as media in forming commons with intra-regional economic circulation.departmental bulletin pape
Discovering the abilities of service users with intellectual disability by nurses working at day care facilities
This study aimed to identify the abilities of service users with intellectual disability by
ascertainingh ow nurses workinga td ayc are facilities forin dividuals withd isabilities perceive
these service users, and to clarify whether the professionals provide support to afford them
new possibilities. The data were collected from records of participation observation and
interviews conducted with nurses working in day care facilities for individuals with disabilities
These data were analyzed qualitatively and descriptively with reference to the methodology of phenomenological nursing research.
The results revealed that nurses start by "recognizing service users as individuals who are
attemptingt om ake contactw itht he outside world," and provide support toh elps ervice users "make contactw itha n ew world." Additionally, theirs upportw as found tob e affected by the unique value ofn urses of "increasing experiences before service users are able to do things." Therefore, the following are suggested: For nurses working in day care facilities for individuals with disabilities, utilizing the "space" when they spend time with service users without relying on verbal communication can lead to awareness of the abilities of service users; and providing service users opportunities to experience a variety of things is important while believing in their potential and growth, not merely focusing on what each service user can do.departmental bulletin pape
Survey of "Period Poverty'' at Miyagi University
This study aimed to clarify the challenges faced by female students at Miyagi University regarding "period poverty," particularly focusing on the economic aspects thought to be affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.
An online, unsolicited questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,258 female students enrolled at Miyagi University. The data collection period was 8 weeks from May 2023.
Data analysis was performed using simple tabulation and x2 test and residual analysis
using Microsoft Excel. The Research Ethics Committee of the University of Miyagi approved this study( No. 1083,20 22).
The number of valid responses was 411 (valid response collection rate: 32.7%). Of the 40
(9.7%) respondents who had difficulty in purchasing or obtaining sanitary products, 21
(52.5%) reported symptoms such as "vulvar itching'' as "often" or "sometimes" experienced and 31 (77.5%) reported "soiling clothes with menstrual blood." Those who paid for their sanitary products experienced significantly more difficulty in purchasing and obtaining sanitary products than those whose parents paid for them. The most predominant needs for support regarding menstruation were "Reduction of the financial burden" (256 [63.5%]
respondents) and "Availability of sanitary napkins at the university''(268 [66.5%] respondents).
Those who had difficulty in purchasing and ob血ningsanitary products were suffering not only from financial but also physical problems, indicating that support is required in terms of health maintenance and management for colleges students. Those who paid for their sanitary products had difficulties in purchasing and obtaining them, and >60% of the students desired to reduce the cost burden of obtaining sanitary products. Thus, it is necessary to consider providing support for reducing the financial burden of purchasing
sanitary products.departmental bulletin pape
Relation between Communication Skills and Difficulties with Silences Arising between Nursing Students and Patients Assigned in Nursing Clinical Practice
Objective: This study aims to detail difficulties with silences arising between nursing students
and patients assigned to them, and identify the relation between such feelings and communication skills.
Methods: An anonymous web survey(Microsoft Forms) was conducted with second to fourth
year nursing students of University A. The questionnaire contains items of demographics,
feelings and experience of difficulties with silences, and items from basic communication skill
scale (ENDCOREs: ENCODE, DECODE, CONTROL, REGULATION). Correlation analysis
was performed to identify the relation between difficulties with silences, lack of confidence in
responding to silences, and communication skills. This study was conducted after obtaining
approval from the Ethics Review Committee of Miyagi University(Miyagi University No. 469)
Results: A total of 101 responses were collected and of these 80 valid responses (79.2%) were included in the analysis. Sixty-one respondents (76.3%) felt difficulty with silences and 55(69.6%) had no confidence in responding to silences. The level of difficulty with silences was positively correlated to "Expressivity," "Assertiveness," and "Regulation of Interpersonal
Relationship," and inversely correlated to the level of lack of confidence in responding to
silences and subscales other than "Acceptance of others "
Discussion: Nursing students may be good at listening to and thinking about what others wish to say. However, students who have difficulty in communication may have more problems in communication skills related to expressivity, such as self-expression and assertiveness. The findings suggest the necessity for training to improve expressive communication skills by aiming at reducing difficulties in communication, acquiring confidence, and using learning and role-playing to improve understanding of the role of silences.departmental bulletin pape

Attitudes and behaviors of Miyagi University faculties regarding academic information: Report from the 2022 questionnaire on acquisition and usage trends of academic information in Miyagi University.
This paper reports the results of a survey on the attitudes and behaviors of Miyagi University faculty members regarding academic information, especially open access and open data, as a case study of a public university in Japan. The survey was conducted from December 2022 to February 2023 for Miyagi University faculty using an online questionnaire survey tool.
As a result, faculties have a high level of interest in trends in open access and the issue of soaring prices for academic journals, and at the same time, it was shown that open access journals are expected to become the main venue for faculties to publish their own results in the future. On the other hand, it was also shown that faculties do not know the details of the conditions and options for issues related to academic information, and that they are anxious about open-data even though they have the intention to deal with it.departmental bulletin pape
