A scoping review of nursing students' comprehensive patient understanding in clinical practicums

    Get PDF
Nursing students must understand patients comprehensively by integrating individual patient information instead of understanding patient information in fragments. This is crucial for practicing optimal and individualized nursing care tailored to the patient's condition during clinical practicums. Consequently, we clarified how nursing students comprehensively understand patients in clinical practicums to find an effective teaching method that enables them to consider individualized nursing care. Nursing students' comprehensive understanding of patients in clinical practicums involves six phases: understanding the patient within the framework of what they have already learned, understanding the patient with awareness of their needs, values, and self-care abilities; reflecting for understanding the patient, obtaining support for understanding the patient, integrating individual patient information to comprehensively understand them, and planning and implementing optimal individualized nursing care for the patient. The six phases ultimately led to personal growth as a nurse. For nursing students to professionally grow in clinical practicums, it is essential to reflect on patient understanding. This requires support from faculty members and clinical practicum supervisors.departmental bulletin pape

New Development of Internship to Support Career Development : Historical Changes and Issues in Internships

    Get PDF
In 2022, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW), and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) presented the "Basic Approach to the Promotion of Internships and Other Career Development Support Initiatives for Students.” Its presentation drastically changed the status of the conventional internships and marked the beginning of “new internships.” This study was conducted to examine issues related to the development of “new internships” and solutions to such issues. Also, this study examined the ideal operation of future internships and issues associated with achieving such operation. First, three aspects were described as the history and current condition of internships: 1) the history of career education at universities in Japan; 2) the history of internships at universities in Japan; and 3) the progress of internships. Secondly, two aspects were introduced to describe earlier studies of internship effects and issues: 1) earlier studies of internship effects and 2) studies of internship related issues. Subsequently, to consider solutions, two aspects were described as issues in internships: 1) the issue of being extracurricular programs and 2) the issue of being outsourced entirely to external contractors. Moreover, university students who participated in the study explained “general issues” and “specific issues” in view of environmental factors at the stage of “growth, imagination, and quest” among the nine “career stages.” Finally, the ideal operation of internships, issues to be solved, and overall conclusions were presented. This study is an updated, corrected, and developed version of the study, “A Critical Study of Career Development Support at University Organizations: Issues in the 21Academy of Human Resource Development (JAHRD). It is hereby confirmed that the first author of this research paper is Osamu TAKAHASHI.departmental bulletin pape

Literature Review on Community Health Assessment Practices: Focusing on Japanese Language Articles Published in the Past Five Years

    Get PDF
Background: In Japan, the increasing complexity of community health issues amid rapid population aging highlights the importance of community health assessments (CHAs) conducted by public health nurses (PHNs). However, implementation remains limited owing to institutional and educational barriers. The COVID-19 pandemic further altered CHA practices, necessitating a reassessment of current trends. Methods: We conducted a narrative review of original Japanese articles on CHAs published between January 2019 and December 2024. Using the Ichushi-Web database, we identified 40 eligible articles based on the criteria, including domestic implementation and detailed descriptions of CHAs. Five researchers collaboratively classified the studies by type, design, and practitioner category and performed a thematic analysis to identify practical challenges. Results: CHA was conducted by students (n=17), PHNs (n=10), researchers (n=8), welfare professionals (n=2), and through collaboration with community members and others (n=3). Challenges faced by PHNs were categorised as either systemic (e.g. limited time, lack of institutional support) or individual (e.g. insufficient data analysis skills, difficulty prioritising issues). The PHNs also experienced reduced opportunities for practical engagement owing to COVID-19 restrictions. Researchers noted that some CHA activities were performed as obligatory tasks with unclear pathways for utilising the assessment results. Conclusions: We concluded that CHAs in Japan are increasingly conducted by a diverse range of actors, reflecting a shift towards collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches. However, PHNs continue to face structural difficulties hindering the sustainability of their CHA practices. Clarifying the role of PHNs and developing collaborative CHA models integrated into education and policy systems are essential for advancing effective implementation.departmental bulletin pape

Miso Industry Realities and Prospects; The Case of Sendai Miso Manufacturing Company in Miyagi Prefecture

    Get PDF
This study focuses on Sendai Miso in Miyagi Prefecture and ascertains the actual situation and challenges based on interviews with Miso company managers. Based on the results of this study; we discuss efforts to maintain the Sendai Miso production area and brand, as well as future prospects. First to understand overall trends in the miso industry; various data on market size, miso consumption trends, raw material usage and exports were examined. Next, the actual state of the miso industry in Miyagi Prefecture was ascertained based on relevant data. The market is shrinking throughout the industry. However, members of the Miyagi Miso and Soy Sauce Industry Cooperative work to improve Sendai Miso's brand power and look toward exports to halt the shrinking market and product decline. More than a few members of this cooperative purchase raw materials from the Miso Soy Sauce Cooperative to produce miso. Only one of these companies produces its own raw materials, such as soya and rice, for miso production. In the miso industry as a whole, only a few companies produce their own raw materials materials; therefore, Company A's Sendai Miso is differentiated from its competitors. However, although the company is particular about the variety of soybeans it grows, there are difficulties in differentiating its products after production, and it is necessary to consider methods that appeal to consumers.departmental bulletin pape

A Nursing Field Study in New South Wales: From Lucy Osburn's Nursing Revolution in the 1860s to Current Australian Nursing

    Get PDF
Both Florence Nightingale and Lucy Osburn laid the groundwork for modern nursing in Australia. Osburn was one of Nightingale's pupils and was deeply involved in Australian nursing. This study delves into the historical development of nursing in Australia and the progressions following the introduction of Florence Nightingale's style of nursing. Furthermore, this study describes how a culturally respectful health system is a valuable aspect of current Australian nursing. A field study was conducted in New South Wales, Australia, between 2023 and 2024. Data were collected by photography and note-taking. Australian nursing was examined through historical, international, and cultural lenses by analysing various literature and the researcher's field notes. In this paper, the development of nursing in Australia and Lucy Osburn's notable achievements are described. Her accomplishments and capacity for nursing reform are discussed from an international nursing perspective. This is followed by describing a cultural aspect of current Australian nursing and nursing education. Because of Australia's diverse population, the Australian healthcare system offers culturally sensitive services to Indigenous. Australians and works to improve the health of Aboriginal people. The field study concluded that culturally sensitive care approaches in Australian nursing are worthy of emulation in Japan to improve the quality of nursing. This implies that Japanese healthcare policies and systems should embed consideration of the health needs of Ainu people.departmental bulletin pape

Positioning of the Work Engagement Concept in Organizational Behavior Theory : Conceptual Comparison with Motivation

    Get PDF
In some cases, the system of organizatio叫behaviortheory can be used for accurate understanding of human perception or behavior in an organization. This study was aimed at selecting work engagement as an important concept for specifying organizational achievements. It clearly presents its conceptual positioning in the system of organizational behavior theory. This activity can be compared with motivation, a traditional concept in organizational behavior theory, as its fundamental viewpoint. First, P (performance) = £(ability x motivation) was presented as a function of motivation. Then the relations of the functions of motivation and ability for performance were described. Subsequently, two theoretical systems were presented, i.e., content theory and process theory, and theories comprising the theoretical systems. As practical development of the motivation theory, the study enabled extraction of individual's motivation scores and comparative analysis of the motivation scores by sex, age group, and sector by converting the theory to a measurable scale based on concept manipulation. Also the study explored how HRM measures can be proposed through the analysis of correlation with other concepts such as job satisfaction and regression analysis. The study also showed that, together with the definition first presented by Schaufeli et al. (2002), work engagement is a concept describing a sustainable and stable condition. The study elucidated the subordinate concepts comprising work engagement, functional characteristics, measurement scales, research findings in the past, recognition in Japan, and other details. The report also presented recognition that integration with Job Crafting is extremely important when assuming practical development in management. Finally, homogeneity and heterogeneity between work engagement and motivation and the conceptual positioning of work engagement in organizational behavior theory were presented.departmental bulletin pape

Food Recycling Law and Food Loss and Food Waste Reduction Initiatives among Major Japanese Food Service Companies

    Get PDF
More than 20 years have passed since Japan's Law for Promotion of Utilization of Recyclable Food Waste was enacted in 2001. The recycling rate in the food service industry was 35%, as of 2022, which is low compared to 96% in the food industry as whole. This difference is due to the fact that the food service industry handles a smaller scale of establishments; a larger variety and smaller quantity of foodstuffs; and elements that are more difficult to manage, such as customers 'leftovers. In this study, after describing the legal framework, we analyzed the current status of initiatives among the top 50 Japanese food service companies, based on a survey of the Japanese food service industry published by Nikkei MJ in June 2023. We found a correlation between total sales and a firm's recycling implementation rate. In all industry categories, the recycling rates for waste oil and food waste were high, and there was a tendency for restaurants to ask customers to cooperate in ordering and consuming at a rate that minimizes leftovers.departmental bulletin pape

Clarification of inflorescence formation in Japanese radish using" Flower Formation Index"

    Get PDF
When the Flower Formation Index was used to evaluate the inflorescence formation of economic radish varieties, the results were clearly quantified as follows: 57.1 for 'Natsu no kizashi', 55.1 for 'Taibyo soubutori', 48.4 for 'Tensyun', 27.2 for 'Haru no miyako', 29.7 for 'Oshin', 19.4 for 'Miya no izumi', 9.2 for 'Banchu Haruzumari', 5.1 for 'Haru no megumi', and 0 for 'Top Runner', 'Wakamiya 2 go', 'Beppin 2 go', and 'Tenpo'. Thus, it became clear that there was a large difference in cold sensitivity even among varieties considered to be late-bolting types (excluding 'Taibyo soubutori'). In cold regions, such as Miyagi Prefecture, it was considered necessary to reexamine the cold sensitivity using the Flower Formation Index, even for varieties considered to be late-bolting types.departmental bulletin pape
