Intention and Nursing Practice: Abolishing Physical restraints for Nurses in Acute-Care Hospital Wards
This study conducted interviews with nurses to clarify the actual content and intention of nursing practice to remove physical restraints for nurses working in acute-care hospital wards. The analysis generated 14 categories, 50 subcategories, and 170 codes related to the actual content and intention of nursing practice. The results suggest that organizations should intentionally involve ward nurses in ethical practices to promote the abolition of physical restraints by utilizing their roles and wealth of clinical experience and influence, and to strengthen and promote the removal of physical restraints in the organization as a whole. It is also important to encourage mutual support from multiple professions. In practice, such efforts increase the motivation of ward nurses and contribute to the development of a hospital-wide culture of mutual support. The results of the study also highlight the need to enhance the autonomy of nurses and practice professional collaboration on an equal footing, wherein the multidisciplinary professions mutually understand and respect each other.departmental bulletin pape
Report on Location Characteristics Based on Actual Use of Free Indoor Spaces on the University Campuse
The purpose of this study is to analyze the usage patterns of the open common spaces in the main building of Taiwa Campus of Miyagi University, focusing on the relationship between the distribution of staying behaviors and spatial and environmental factors. The study aims to evaluate usage trends and the factors influencing them.
To this end, field observations were conducted on four floors of the main building. Across time slots including lectures, breaks, and lunchtime, the number of users, their attributes (such as whether they were alone or in groups), and we recorded staying behavior. We analyzed these data to characterize usage across floors and individual open common spaces. Additionally, environmental factors such as illuminance and noise level, and spatial factors such as visual enclosure and layout, were measured and analyzed in relation to user behavior.
The results reveal differences in usage patterns across floors and between solo users and groups. Furthermore, a clear relationship was identified between staying behavior and spatial factors. These findings suggest that the underuse of certain open common spaces is strongly associated with spatial or environmental factors.
This study contributes to understanding how spatial and environmental design influences user behavior in open common spaces. It provides valuable insights for improving or redeveloping campus spaces based on actual user needs and behavior patterns, supporting more effective and inclusive placemaking strategies.departmental bulletin pape

The Current Status and Issues of the Support System in General Wards for the Development of New Nurses by all Ward Nurses: A Scoping Review
This study aimed to identify specific strategies for collaboratively nurturing new nurses by conducting a scoping review that would allow us to provide an overview of the roles and support provided by various stakeholders involved in their development. We also aimed to clarify the current state and issues of the support system. This study followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines and used the following databases: the web version of the Japan Medical Abstracts Society and PubMed. Literature was searched using a combination of the following keywords: "new nurses," "training," "education," and "support.” A literature search clarified the role and support of each role. On-site clinical instructors provided direct guidance to new nurses and evaluated their nursing practices. Their support extended beyond technical instructions to include psychological support and coordination with other staff members. Clinical educators were tasked with enhancing the education and development of new graduate nurses by offering guidance to clinical instructors and establishing departmental support systems. They also provided support that aimed at ensuring safe nursing care and mental health support for new nurses. Senior nurses provide psychological support to on-site clinical instructors and practical support for job training, and their guidance is tailored to promote the growth of new nurses. Nurse managers are tasked with developing educational systems, providing mental health support, and fostering a conducive workplace environment. Furthermore, they created support systems that facilitated the adaptation of new nurses to the workplace through collaborative efforts and provided psychological support to new nurses who faced adaptation challenges and to the staff responsible for their guidance. To effectively education new nurses, it is essential for the entire workplace to share a culture of "collective responsibility for development," which ensures collaboration and mutual support across various professional roles. Achieving this requires nurse managers to exercise leadership to promote a clear vision of the development and educational plans for all nurses involved in guiding new nurses within the ward.departmental bulletin pape
Environmental attitudes and human-nature connectedness among first-year students at Miyagi University: As a guideline for developing an environmental education program utilizing the campus forest.
This study investigated freshmen students at Miyagi University using established measures such as the Connected to Nature (CN) scale and the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale to assess their affective closeness to nature and environmental attitudes. The survey was conducted in the context of Miyagi University’s campus and affiliated farm being certified as an Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECM) site by the Ministry of the Environment, with the aim of providing a basis for designing environmental education programs that make use of campus forests for students and local residents. In addition, participants were asked about their engagement in Pro-Environmental Behaviors (PEBs), preferences for animals, plants, and insects, concerns about global environmental issues and their own future, and demographic attributes such as gender. Correlation analyses were conducted between these variables and the CN and NEP scores.
The results revealed the levels of students’ connectedness to nature and environmental attitudes, which serve as a foundation for developing educational programs. Significant positive correlations were observed between CN and NEP scores and PEBs, while significant negative correlations emerged between these scores and concerns about the environment and personal future. These findings suggest that environmental education programs utilizing campus nature may contribute to the promotion of PEBs and the enhancement of well-being among students and the broader community.departmental bulletin pape
Learning Activities and Support Challenges Among Nursing Students in Fundamental Nursing Practicum I and II
This study aimed to visualize the learning activities of nursing students in Fundamental Nursing Practicum I and II and to identify challenges for future support. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using the "Self-Evaluation Scale for Learning Activities in Nursing Practicum," a tool with established reliability and validity. The participants were 89 first-year nursing students at a junior college. Web-based self-administered questionnaires were administered after the completion of each practicum. The average total score on the scale was 152.8 in Practicum I and 155.6 in Practicum II, indicating an overall improvement in the quality of learning activities throughout the practicums. Specifically, in Practicum II, there was an increase in the number of students in the mid-score range, and no students were classified in the low-score range. However, some subscale scores decreased in Practicum II compared to Practicum I, suggesting potential issues in areas such as relationship building and the integration of classroom learning with clinical practice. These findings underscore the importance of providing individualized support for items with lower scores and establishing a comprehensive evaluation system that considers both the learning process and outcomes. This study offers foundational data for enhancing the effectiveness of support strategies in fundamental nursing practicum education.departmental bulletin pape

Re-examining Park-PFI from a Private Sector Perspective: A Business Administration Analysis
This study examines whether Japan’s Public Park Private Finance Initiative (P-PFI), introduced following the 2017 amendment of the Urban Park Act, provides competitive advantages and tangible outcomes for private businesses from a management theory perspective. Against the backdrop of fiscal constraints and aging infrastructure in Japanese municipalities, Private Finance Initiative (PFI) has emerged as a key Public-Private Partnership (PPP) approach. The P-PFI applies this framework specifically to public parks, enabling private businesses not only to develop revenue-generating facilities but also to undertake the redevelopment and maintenance of public spaces within park areas. It offers unique incentives such as eased building coverage ratios for park facilities and extended facilities permit durations, thereby supporting private sector investment and long-term project stability. This research combines theoretical analysis—using Resource-Based View (RBV), Stakeholder Theory (SHT), Five Forces Analysis, and Innovation Theory—with an empirical survey targeting firms involved in P-PFI projects as of 2023. The findings suggest that P-PFI allows private businesses to secure competitive advantages through complex activity systems and stakeholder collaborations while promoting innovation in accordance with Schumpeter’s five types of innovation. Market analysis indicates that P-PFI offers a moderately stable competitive environment with limited rivalry and manageable external threats. However, challenges such as high initial costs and modest profitability hinder the full realization of these advantages. This study proposes that enhancing institutional flexibility and improving risk-return balances are crucial for the future development of P-PFI. It offers one of the first comprehensive management-oriented analyses of P-PFI and provides a foundation for further academic and practical exploration.departmental bulletin pape
Prosthetic Manipulation and Narrative Fragility: The Roles of Alceste and Cleopatra in Constructing The Legend of Good Women
This study examines Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Legend of Good Women (LGW), focusing on the narrator’s reliance on external figures—Alceste and Cleopatra—to construct poetic authority. The study highlights LGW’s narrative fragility and performative instability by examining Alceste and Cleopatra as prosthetic figures. Alceste, presented as both a muse and a symbolic authority, anchors legitimacy yet remains an unstable source of support. Her dual role as sacred figure and unreliable foundation underscores the precarious nature of poetic voice and narrative stability. Similarly, Cleopatra, reimagined as a “martyr of love,” simplifies her classical complexity, recasting her death as pseudo-martyrdom through hagiographic exaggeration. These manipulations illuminate the structural tensions arising from the narrator’s dependence on figures whose support is essential and unstable. The study contributes to broader discussions of Chaucer’s poetics of dependency and prosthetic supplementation, pointing toward the need to further examine the tension between the narrator’s dependency and emerging subjectivity as mediated through the representations of “Good Women” in the poem’s incomplete text.departmental bulletin pape
