MORPHOLOGICAL VARIATION IN Eonycteris spelaea (CHIROPTERA: PTEROPODIDAE) FROM THE GREATER AND LESSER SUNDAS ISLANDS, INDONESIA AND DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SUBSPECIES

    No full text
Morphological variation in the cave fruit bat, Eonycteris spelaea from Indonesia and the Philippines was examined using both univariate and multivariate statistical analyses based on measurements of 22 skull characters and 15 external body characters from 270 adult specimens. Other non-meristic characters were also examined. Multiple regression analyses indicated strong sexual dimorphism in both skull and external body characters. Almost all measured characters differed significantly between islands. Thirteen of the 37 characters were also influenced ~t:he age of adults. Four distinct morphological groups of E. spelaea.were recognised using discriminant function analysis following the removal of the effects of,age and sex on the measurements considered. These were: Jawa/Sumatera Group, Lesser Sunda/Philippines Group, Sulawesi Group and Kalimantan Group. These morphological groups were considered subspecifically distinct; the Kalimantan Group is herein described as a new subspecies

    No full text
The problem of intolerance and radicalization since the reformation era has continued to grow and is increasingly worrying, due to the opening of wide spaces for groups carrying radicalism to develop themselves, as a consequence of the widespread implementation of democracy in Indonesia. The spread of intolerance and radicalism is increasingly widespread and has infiltrated various government institutions, the police and the military, and has even infiltrated educational institutions from PAUD (Early Childhood Education) to university levels. Therefore, to overcome the increasingly serious problem of national and state harmony, it is necessary to make strong efforts from all parties to revive religious moderation and live in harmony in differences in religious beliefs, as has been applied for a long time in the life of the ancestors of the Nusantara since ancient civilizations. This paper aims to reveal that Indonesia actually has the potential of the nation's local wisdom system and values with genetics of moderation and harmony in religious life, not just a concept, but has been implemented since thousands of years ago, and the method used is in the form of literature studies and expressions of results. The author's thoughts and studies are based on experience in living social and national life as citizens who believe outside of mainstream religion. Some things that need to be discussed are related to the relationship between the natural environment (habitat) and the character of the human inhabitants

This article is aimed at reporting some socio-cultural factors that may have constrained the improvement of the competitive advantage of Indonesian small and medium enterprises (SME). Based on the data collected from metal industries in four locations, namely Sukabumi, Tegal, Ceper and Pasuruan, the study found that the products of these industries, especially automotive parts and components have not been not able to compete in local markets with those from China, not to mention those from Japan and other advanced industrial nations, both in quality and price. Using social capital approach in depicting the existing industries’ situation the study puts forward some important socialcultural factors that have contributed to the competitive disadvantage. These include: (1) the inability to depart from traditional way producing goods in which the quality of products is largely dependent on the skills of a master or “mpu†instead of systematic scientific knowledge as a characteristic in modern industries; (2) a subsistent mentality indicated by the reluctance to develop into a bigger industry which is beyond the controllability of the owner/manager; and (3) the reluctance to form and commit in an industrial association, while this kind of organization may prevent members from cut-throat competition as has prevailed until recently. The study concludes as long as the situation remains, the products of these industries will remain to stay in the lower segment of the market, and more importantly, these industries will have very little chance of becoming business partners and suppliers of parts and components for big assembling industries. This means that in the foreseeable future the local markets will still be flooded by imported metal industrial products, and foreign small and medium metal industries will still hold a dominant position as suppliers for local automotive assembling industries
