Ressenya de: Alain Damasio i Benjamin Mayet (2016). Le Dehors de toute chose. La Volte

    No full text

Piazzolla sensitivo. Ciudad, territorio y movimiento

    No full text
Our descriptive-analytical essay explores the relationships ranging from expressive territory to urban and metropolitan nomenclatures. The tango -La Plata folklore- in its complicit margins with the migratory rites was institutionalized in Argentina during the third decade of the twentieth century. Despite the interest in tensions between language and dialect, pampa and modernization, the gravitas of the text are the disturbances of meaning and post-representation with respect to spatial, territorial, abstract and identitarian cities, where interpretative trade abounds. Once the decarean tango era suffers an irreparable inflection, the Peronist stagnation on the city musical becomes evident. In this sense the resonance effects (sensitive regime) of the plastic Piazzolliana, includes modernity that deviates from the aesthetics of the frame, and introduces the incardination of forms. The past-present relationship (temporalities) imputes the cultural limits of sound nationalism, strengthens the de-territorialized rhythm, avoiding the popular myth of plebeian republicanism. Finally, given the notion of assembly (Deleuze), the text questions the "metaphor of nomadism", focused on the fusions of a moving border (singular, temporal and transcultural). Since the founding of the Octeto de Buenos Aires (1955) Piazzolla represents the staging of an event that seeks to overcome the sonorous obscurantism of Peronism.

Memory stores and retrieves experiences in order to better adapt to the future. Source memory associates items with their context, integrating spatial-temporal and emotional aspects. Factors such as the emotionality of the item and the context influence its retrieval. Several studies show that music and emotions affect learning and retrieval, especially in bilinguals, where differences between languages reveal complex interactions. This study investigated how item emotionality and contextual cues influence declarative memory in Spanish-English bilinguals. A learning and retrieval protocol was designed for this purpose. During learning, positive, neutral, and negative words in Spanish (L1) and English (L2) were presented on screen, accompanied by musical fragments categorized as positive, neutral or negative. During retrieval, participants completed free recall and recognition tasks in two sessions: after encoding (immediate) and seven days later (delayed). In Study 1, 13 Spanish-English bilingual volunteers observed the words (visual modality), while for Study 2, nine bilingual volunteers listened to the words, recorded in a female voice (auditory modality). Results revealed better performance in L2 than in L1, particularly in delayed evaluations, suggesting that music as a contextual cue favors long-term consolidation in L2. In free recall, emotional words were better remembered than neutral words, while in recognition, negative words achieved higher hit rates. In addition, neutral contextual cues were retrieved more successfully than emotional ones. In the visual modality, musical cues benefited L2 memory, whereas, in the auditory modality, the effects were more limited. These findings suggest that music could be used strategically to improve L2 long-term memory consolidation, which has wider implications in the design of pedagogical methods in bilingualism and second language acquisition.

Research on map competences in geographic education and beyond has a considerable tradition. Based on various operationalizations, previous studies were devoted to the specific competence of map decoding, diagnosing several challenges mainly related to symbolic and geometric decoding. The present paper uses the Cartographic Competence Model of Hemmer et al. (2010) to explore students’ map decoding competences. Eye-tracking was used to explore students’ actions during the processing of map decoding tasks. The results of this exploratory study provide, on the one hand, empirical evidence on the validity of the map decoding competences defined in the Cartographic Competence Model. On the other hand, the findings offer a first insight into students’ actions while decoding symbols and map geometry. The research also suggests ways to improve the applied methods and sampling for future studies.

    No full text
This study analyzes the ideological matrices of feminist influencer accounts on Instagram in Spain between 2018 and 2022, focusing on their relationship with neoliberalism. It centers, from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), on accounts with over a million followers, specifically Freeda, Moderna de pueblo, and Cultura Inquieta. The exploratory analysis reveals that these accounts incorporate neoliberal elements into their narratives. Key logics identified include the promotion of female empowerment through consumption, the legitimization of large corporations as agents of social change, and entrepreneurship as a symbol of empowerment. The findings highlight the emergence of a hybrid neoliberal feminism that, while advocating for diversity and inclusion, reinforces individualistic and consumerist ideologies. Furthermore, the study underscores the value of CDA in uncovering how these discourses sustain systemic inequalities and serve capitalist interests.

Gossiping in an Internet Forum: A Corpus-Based Study of the Use of Anglicisms

    No full text
The presence of Anglicisms in multiple domains of Spanish speakers’ daily life is unquestionable. This paper intends to demonstrate the use of English lexical items in an Internet forum, namely www.cotilleando.com, which is devoted to sharing opinions, views and gossip about influencers, including YouTubers, Instagrammers and TikTokers. A corpus of 121,102 words has been collected and examined by using the analysis tool AntConc (https://www.laurenceanthony.net/software/antconc/). A subsequent manual analysis has allowed us to excerpt a sample of thirty-two English lexical items. This collection of Anglicisms has been examined from a quantitative and qualitative points of view. The quantitative study has provided data on the frequency of use of the sample collected within the extensive corpus, whereas the qualitative analysis offers examples of the use of these English terms in the real posts excerpted from the forum. Additionally, a discussion on the categories of these Anglicisms and the pragmatic functions they fulfil is provided. The findings reveal a tendency to use English lexical items in this internet forum. Non-adapted or pure Anglicisms are the most frequently used, followed by adapted English loanwords; only one case of a false Anglicism was identified. Conclusions highlight the tendency to use English borrowings in the field of social media, more precisely those addressed to followers who discuss about influencers, may they be YouTubers, Instagrammers or TikTokers, in the context of an internet forum

Subjectivity Adrift: Jhumpa Lahiri’s Whereabouts, Loneliness, and the Composite Novel

    No full text
Existing accounts of the relationship between literature and loneliness have praised fiction’s ability to both enhance the expression of the phenomenon and potentially play a part in its medical treatment. The present article aims to analyse the representation of loneliness in literary narrative through Jhumpa Lahiri’s Whereabouts (2021). To do so, it approaches the text and its aesthetic configuration in a twofold manner. First, it studies the subjective representation of loneliness in the novel, arguing that the anonymity of Lahiri’s narrative voice and setting afford her the possibility to abstract her character from culturally informed notions of community. This abstraction from the protagonist’s cultural environment leads to her depiction as a perennial outsider: a universal, lonely subject who lives vicariously through other experiences but fails to find solace in any lasting intersubjective connection. Secondly, the paper engages with the novel’s generic interplay with brevity, exploring how Whereabouts’ interstitial features as a composite novel (Dunn and Morris 1995)—suspended between the established taxonomic affordances of both long and short forms, and structurally interwoven with questions of fragmentariness and belonging—further enhance its aesthetic engagement with loneliness
