The Effects of Financial Factors on Takaful Demand in Malaysia

    No full text
This paper offers a theoretical framework for studying the effects of financial factors, i.e. leverage, growth, bankruptcy, tax, and other variables on Takaful (Islamic insurance) demand. Data were collected from three Takaful operators and the financial reports from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), including 278 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for this study. AMOS version 20, a variance-based Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), was used to analyse the data as well as to test the research hypotheses. The outcomes show that financial factors could be a major predictor of Takaful demand at least from the SMEs\u27 perspective. Financial factors were found to be positively affected by leverage, growth, bankruptcy, and taxes. The implications of these findings are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided

    No full text
The work systems of organizations nowadays depend on IT. Hospitality industry is one of the industries affected by the IT revolution. Studies on the use of Accounting Information Systems (AIS) in the hotel industry, especially in developing countries, are limited. Thus, this research attempts to fill the knowledge gap by exploring the adoption of AIS in the Malaysian context. The research adopts a survey approach where the data were collected through a postal questionnaire from senior accounting managers in three, four, and five star rated hotels. A total of 101 completed and usable questionnaires were gathered from a total of 367 mailed questionnaires, giving a response rate of 27.52%. The findings confirm the wide use of computerized accounting systems in the hotels, although, the extent of the AIS use is relatively unsophisticated with the focus on basic accounting modules and fundamental accounting-based applications

The airport industry is currently changing rapidly. In the competitive market, airport service providers have to create themselves differently by meeting the needs of travelers better than the competitors. This is because travelers are an airport?s main customers and their first impression of airport facilities and services may influence their feelings towards the airport. Therefore, this study aims to investigate travelers? perceived service quality of the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) as the overall quality would affect the decision of future travelers using the LCCT. A survey was carried out at the main exits of the LCCT after determining a list of factors affecting the airport service quality. Based on the analysis of literature, the authors proposed a system of criteria designed for measuring the quality of airport services according to five service quality dimensions. To test the relationships between the variables, the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) is used to analyze survey data collected from 136 travelers at LCCT. The results show that travelers have various views on the service quality provided by the LCCT

    No full text
This study investigates the determinants of carbon dioxide emissions in ASEAN+3 countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Japan and South Korea) during the period of 1991 to 2010. The methodologies employed in this study include the Im, Pesaran, and Shin Panel Unit Root test, the Pedroni (Engle-Granger based) Cointegration Test, and the Granger-Causality based on the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). Results from the panel unit root test show that all the variables are integrated of order one, I (1). For the cointegration test, the results indicate that there is a long relationship between carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, urbanisation, trade openness, and transportation. The empirical results show that economic growth, energy consumption, and trade openness are the determinants of CO2 emissions in ASEAN+3

    No full text
Advertisement denotes a standard strategy of attracting public interest and facilitating purchase decisions. This research aims to determine the digital advertisement feature effects on consumer purchase intent in Malaysia. A cross-sectional design was employed to gather quantitative data from 361 Malaysian respondents with a digital survey. Additionally, SPSS was utilised to assess the digital advertising-purchase intention relationship. Resultantly, pictorial cues, repetition, and sensory stores significantly influenced Malaysian consumers’ purchase intention. Following the motivation theory, this research identified a relationship between digital advertising feature effects and purchase intention power that proved inadequate in past studies. The study outcome proved vital in rearranging advertising methods to be more appealing and informative for customers to receive clear and precise knowledge

Islamic banking and economic growth in Malaysia: evidence for a causal relationship pre and post regulatory reform

    No full text
This paper aims to examine the long-run relationship between Islamic banking development and economic growth in Malaysia for 15 years from 2004Q1 – 2018Q4. This paper employs the bound testing approach and long-run models which are developed within the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) framework. Islamic banking development is represented by the quarterly time-series data of Islamic banks’ total deposits [ln(dep)]. Meanwhile, Gross Domestic Products [ln(GDP)] represents economic growth. In addition, four control variables are selected, i.e. gross fixed capital formation [ln(GFCF)], trade openness [ln(OPN)], consumer price index [ln(CPI)], and general government expenditure [ln(GE)]. The findings of this research indicate that there is an Islamic finance-growth relationship in Malaysia. Besides, it also highlights the difference in the Islamic finance-economic growth nexus between pre- and post-IFSA 2013. The findings are expected to have important implications for the banking institutions, regulators, as well as policymakers, in formulating future strategies to enhance both the banking and economic development in Malaysia

Determinants of Sterilisation using Trilemma Policy: A study in Qatar, Kuwait, Indonesia, and Japan

    No full text
Trilemma policy is a concept of international economics in which it is impossible to gain all three variables at once or also known as Mundell-Fleming framework. Trilemma policies consist of independent monetary policy, exchange rate stability, and free capital mobility. By pursuing any two of the variables, it will shadow the other one. On the other hand, sterilisation is the policy which is set by the central bank to limit the effect of inflow and outflow of the capital money supply. Trilemma policy affected the sterilisation, which is the proxy by central bank reserve due to the latter that depends on the former. The purpose of this study is to find the relationship between trilemma policy and sterilisation. The sample of the study focused on four countries such as Qatar, Kuwait, Indonesia, and Japan by collecting monthly data from the year 2009 to 2017. At the end of this study, the findings will verify whether it is possible to maintain all the three variables in trilemma policy to achieve a stable economic condition by sterilisation

The assumption of the unlimited human wants (UnHW) is based on a conventional economic philosophy. Economic philosophies are often derived from theories by post-classical philosophy that founded the capitalist system and theories of Marxist. Besides that, post-Marxist philosophy founded the socialist and communist systems. Both capitalist and Marxist philosophers believe that human’s wants are unlimited. The assumptions of the UnHW are adopted by Islamic economists before being practised and assimilated into Islamic elements or also known as assumptions in Islamic economics. There is a concern whether the assumption of the UnHW is accepted in Islamic economics. If the assumption is not true, what is the assumption of human’s wants according to Islamic law? This paper intended to identify and analyse the assumptions of the UnHW based on Islamic principles. The data were obtained from library studies and this study used content and textual analyses to achieve the goal. This study found that the assumptions of the UnHW are in line with Islamic principles that can be proposed for the Islamic economy

    No full text
This study was designed to examine the role of market orientation on innovation orientation of manufacturing SMEs in the Accra Metropolis, Ghana. SMEs have been touted by many economies as a backbone for their growth and hence, economic development. However, many of them struggle to have access to market and appropriate technology needed for expansion. In the light of this, this study sought to investigate this issue in the context of developing country, particularly, Ghana. The research approach adopted for this study was quantitative. In addition, whereas simple random sampling technique was adopted to select 346 manufacturing SMEs from the sample frame obtained from NBSSI, PLS-SEM was employed to analyse the relationship between market orientation and innovation orientation. The study revealed that customer orientation and inter-functional coordination have a significant positive relationship with innovation orientation. However, competitor orientation did not have a significant relationship with innovation orientation. This means that manufacturing SMEs which search and satisfy the needs of customers and also share information about customers across the organisation stand tall in improving on their operational processes, products and market activities
