This paper presents the assessment of wound healing properties of ethanolic extract of Acrostichum aureum and A. speciosum in rats. It was carried out on 6 treated groups with 6 rats each group. The excisional wound was made on the dorsal interscapular region of each rat by a 6 mm biopsy punch. T1 and T2 were treated with 5% and 10% A. aureum ethanolic extract in aqua cream, respectively. Meanwhile, T3 and T4 were treated with 5% and 10% A. speciosum ethanolic extract in aqua cream, respectively. Solcoseryl jelly and aqua cream were used as positive and negative controls. The treatments were applied topically twice daily, wound contraction and period of epithelization were measured every 2 days. The results showed that wound treated with 10% A. speciosum (T4) exerted faster wound contraction significantly (p < 0.05) compared to the negative control. It was also enhanced epithelization period (9.33 ± 3.20 days) of the wounds significantly (p < 0.05). In conclusion, these results strongly suggested the beneficial effects of both plant extracts for enhancing wound healing process

The total antioxidants content in five Lamiaceae plants were examined. Fresh Plecranthus amboinicus Lour. Indonesia leaves were collected from Jakarta, Indonesia and leaves of Plecranthus amboinicus Lour. Malaysia, Pogostemon cablin Benth., Solenostemon scutellariodes Red and Solenostemon scutellariodes Mix Colour were collected from Kuantan, Malaysia. Leaves were freeze-dried, ground and extracted using methanol. The extracted leaves were determined the scavenging activity of the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Results showed that the P. cablin Benth. leaves exhibited the significant (p<0.05) highest degree of antioxidant activity (63.18%). It was followed by S. scutellariodes Red (54.81%) and S. scutellariodes Mix Colour (50.44%) which both showed significant differences (p<0.05). Both of the P. amboinicus Lour. Malaysia and P. amboinicus Lour. Indonesia displayed the lowest degree of antioxidant activity (p>0.05), i.e 47.07% and 45.38%, respectively. The P. cablin Benth. showed the total phenols (7.64 mg/g fw) but insignificant with the P. amboinicus Lour. Indonesia (7.42 mg/g fw), S. scutellariodes Red (7.32 mg/g fw) and P. amboinicus Lour. Malaysia (7.23 mg/g fw). Only the S. scutellariodes Mix Colour showed significantly (p?0.05) compared total phenols (5.64 mg/g fw). This research provided a chemical basis for some of the health benefits claimed for in folk medicine and warrant further studies to develop it as a natural functional food

Characterization and Sensitivity Test of the Allergenic Pollen Proteins from Litchi Chimensis Plant

    No full text
Pollen of Litchi chinensis (Litchi) is a major aeroallergen of Bangladesh. Pollen of this fruits plant was collected from full bloomed flower growing in different places of Rajshahi in Bangladesh. Pollen protein was extracted and partial purified by means of long-term PBS extraction, salting out, dialysis, gel filtrations and DEAE-Cellulose chromatography and the protein was designated as LFPP (Litchi flowers pollen protein). Gel filtration of the purified pollen protein gives two main peaks. The major peak gives four bands on SDS-PAGE. The enzyme (pectate lyase) proteins after gel filtration again re-purified by Ion exchange chromatography, a single band in the protein profile of LFPP, (M.W. 28kDa) was the major allergenic component of Litchi chinensis (Litchi) flower pollen. The homogeneity and the molecular weight of the protein were estimated by SDS-PAGE, and Gel filtration was 28kDa. The allergenic protein was identified by skin prick tests and showed the pectate lyase (Pel) activity. Skin-prick tests also revealed highest degree of sensitivity to the Nawabgang sample giving positive response in 80% of the patients. Skin reactivity ranged between 1+ and 3+

TRADISI LISAN DAN PELANCONGAN DI MALAYSIA: SATU SARANAN

    No full text
Oral tradition has a close relationship with the pattern of life, thought and belief of a society. In Malaysian context, there is a big gap between oral tradition and tourism. However, it is still not too late to take appropriate actions in order to save the oral tradition. A study about the extinction and the conservation measures of the oral tradition in Kelantan (Haron Daud, 2008) has found that a large number of young people under the age of 20 years did not know Selampit, Mak Yong, Wayang Kulit and Menora. Cultural factors are important in showing the grandeur of a nation. Malaysia does not have Borobudur, Angkor Wat, the Taj Mahal, or the Great Wall of China. Thus, it is important to pay some attention to the oral tradition in an effort to preserve the heritage of the nation

Role of BERNAS as Government Linked Company (GLC) – Supporting and Complementing National (Malaysia) Food Security Food Policies

    No full text
As the privatized foodgrain management agency, BERNAS plays its roles in supporting and complementing the national food security policy of Malaysia. These include: (1) promoting market stability and thereby stabilizing rice prices, making them affordable to the consumers; (2) ensuring sufficient supply of rice of various grades and qualities anywhere in the country, making rice easily accessible to all; and (3) supporting the sustainability of domestic rice production which is deemed important to the national food security. These roles have established BERNAS as a ?rice institution? rather than a ?rice shop? whereby its main function is not to compete with other players in the market, but to make sure that all players in the industry would have sufficient margin to enable them to continue with their respective businesses. In doing so, BERNAS serves the interests of all stakeholders in the paddy and rice industry, including farmers, industry players, consumers, government and the nation as a whole. Due to these roles, BERNAS always has to balance between its commercial interest, since it must make reasonable profit in order to survive, and the interest of the nation as a whole. It is a delicate task in ensuring the confidence of the public and various stakeholders
